not that interesting, imo

dmr, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:38 (fourteen years ago)

not crazy about the new name but always happy to hear that herrema's got something new coming out. love her production, or whoever produces her stuff, it's like total maximalist rock insanity.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:44 (fourteen years ago)

feeling this.

me too. like some modern rnb shit lol

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:46 (fourteen years ago)

not *that* modern though, to me it sounds like Jonzun Crew's "Welcome to the Future" reimagined as a rock record or something

I am just discovering RTX and am loving them! particularly singles, live, unreleased...how does ILM feel about Pussy Galore? I just watched the clip of them on the Uncle Floyd show which is unreal

Iago Galdston, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 02:11 (fourteen years ago)

fwiw Singles Live Unreleased is "proper" Royal Trux with Jennifer and Neil, RTX was the (intentionally?) confusing name for Jennifer Herrema's post-Royal Trux band (and Black Bananas is the same people as RTX I think, they just changed the name)

nothing i've heard by howling hex does anything for me, seems like hagerty has no interest in writing songs anymore and just wants to noodle.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 11 January 2012 16:40 (fourteen years ago)

that's crazy. i mean it's true of at least one hex record but there are ~song~ songs through all of the records; 'breakaway', 'faithful sister', a great cover of the old trad 'de colores', slinky workouts on all-night fox, basically all of XI, 'you can't beat tomorrow' on the same record, know that on NMH, &c&c&c. you should try to find a couple of these if poss.

i thought i'd be able to illustrate this w/youtubes but there's hardly anything there; this isn't exactly proving my point but yknow i still like to listen to it as a wriggly hex jam

I don't know about ILM, but Dial M for Motherfucker is just an amazing album and truth be told, I prefer it to most of the RTX stuff I've heard.

Listening to this again, it sounds like three Chrome songs and one Cinderella song all playing at the same time. I'm OK with that.

unlistenable in philly (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Saturday, 14 January 2012 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

I think the "Pussy Galore can't play" canard comes from stuff like "Cunt Tease", "Kill Yourself", the Exile cassette and their early shows. Total fucked-up ineptitude was a fashionable pose at the time.

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Saturday, 14 January 2012 22:42 (fourteen years ago)

There's a kind of stupid youtube parody of Pussy Galore that I'm not going to bother linking, but the one funny part is Julia C. in the studio with headphones on, very carefully recording her, "Fuck you!" part.

i like mosurock's still single column on dusted, but sometimes it just seems like he's listened to *too much* of this stuff. like he's jaded about things that really aren't worth being jaded about.

tylerw, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

anyhoo this album is extremely entertaining.
also, seeing howling hex tomorrow! excited. last time i saw any royal truxsters was uhhh 1997!

tylerw, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

young people don't like funkadelic? what?

i love the idea of doug mosurock delicately placing the black bananas CD into his home hi-fi setup replete with "really good studio speakers" and wrinkling his nose

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:12 (fourteen years ago)

I had personal reasons for hating him prior to this, but that's just really shitty writing

Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:20 (fourteen years ago)

sad excuse for a review, there.

so long as you're interested in weird punk, rock and noise-related obscurities, mosurock's column and tumblr are valuable as a consumer guide: notes on what's out there by someone who's taste is fairly obvious and thus easy to calibrate for, whether or not you agree with him on the details. never read him for the writing quality or even the analysis.

at the Pinhook? I almost got out to that one but my sleep schedule was fucked up from travel so I didn't. last time I saw RTX, at 506, they were great! what happened?

decrepit but free (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 3 June 2012 14:06 (thirteen years ago)

They sucked in Atlanta, too. I'm willing to cut JH so much slack, but that show was tough to endure. Abusively, pointlessly loud. No live drums, much to my surprise, just hesher dudes on electronics not groovin' at all.

Really like the record though, great psychedelic production.

InternationalWaters, Monday, 4 June 2012 05:10 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, at the pinhook. i didn't mind the drum machine, but they waited forever to play (went on after midnight when magik markers finished up well before 11), it was definitely "abusively, pointlessly loud," which killed any of the vibe of the record and replaced it with undifferentiated volume, and they were just totally uninterested in playing. i mean, it was "interesting" in a negative drive-kinda sense, but not, y'know, actually something that i wanted to be around.

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 21:31 (eleven years ago)

My main issue of the review was that only 2/5ths of the paragraphs were about the new album.

Immediate Follower (NA), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 21:38 (eleven years ago)

A whopping six sentences.

Immediate Follower (NA), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 21:39 (eleven years ago)

yeah this is symptomatic of a much larger trend in rock writing in general where discussion of the actual music contained in a release is mostly incidental to the overall narrative of the artist's career (which I really v rarely care about, but that's what media consumption is increasingly oriented around, the story of the "artist")

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 21:45 (eleven years ago)

I dunno why I said rock writing there, just music crit in general. maybe it was always this way and I'm just more aware of it now, I dunno.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 21:46 (eleven years ago)

Also, weird how Hagerty continues to make brilliant records to almost no notice whatsoever (new 10", cassette just released) while JH gets all the love. I get that her stuff is more, err, populist (obviously, I use that term very loosely), and I dig it and everything, but Hagerty's stuff just gets better all the time, and it seems like his fanbase shrinks in proportion to his awesomeness.

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 22:08 (eleven years ago)

possibly not helping his case by releasing his new music on 10" and cassette tbf

Kiss Screaming Seagull Her Seagull Her (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 22:11 (eleven years ago)

the RTX stuff is getting a push via publicists, etc it seems like. hagerty meanwhile doesn't even mention that he has records out during shows. he's never had a merch table or anything.

tylerw, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 22:13 (eleven years ago)

yeah it doesn't have anything to do with the music and everything to do with which one of them wants attention more

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 22:13 (eleven years ago)

circa maybe the mid-00s it seemed like Hagerty was getting more crit respect out of the two but yeah probably not the case now

xp yeah I didn't know he had new stuff

Kiss Screaming Seagull Her Seagull Her (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 22:14 (eleven years ago)

tbf Hagerty's also strayed pretty far from the easily-summarizable narrative noted in the pfork review - the r'n'r debauchery arc - and Herrema's stuck with it. Hag's been making pseudo mexican polka records w no drums, makes no references to drugs/partying, clearly dgaf about "rock" in any real way etc.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 22:17 (eleven years ago)

This is all true.
