chickfactor will celebrate its 20-year anniversary with five blissful nights of sparkling indie pop on the Northeast Corridor of the USA (three in NY; two in DC) including the first shows in years by Black Tambourine, Small Factory, Pipas, The Aislers Set, A Girl Called Eddy, The Softies, The Lois Plus, The Legendary Jim Ruiz Group and Fan Modine and rare performances from such pop luminaries as Stevie Jackson (Belle & Sebastian), Frankie Rose, Lilys, Lorelei, Dot Dash, Versus, Bridget St John and Honey Bunch.[/q]

Does this have anything to do with Chickfactor the zine from the 90's?

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 22:37 (fourteen years ago)

The very same, click the link.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 22:48 (fourteen years ago)

Wow I didn't know Pam Berry and Gail O’Hara were still doing that! Chickfactor introduced me to so much great music in high school. Would love to see Versus again.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

well shit that looks like fun

damn i wish i could go to one of these, going to have to settle for secondhand reportage and youtube vids.

omar little, Thursday, 12 January 2012 01:30 (fourteen years ago)

Jesus, I think I might break down if I saw Small Factory now. Are these shows going to be full of nostalgic 40-year-olds crying our eyes out?

dlp9001, Thursday, 12 January 2012 01:49 (fourteen years ago)

Well, I got my tickets. If Phoebe Summersquash has gotten old and fat, I'm going to be pretty freaked out.

dlp9001, Thursday, 12 January 2012 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

softies!

The Aislers Set reunion at the Fortuna Pop anniversary shows was astoundingly wonderful.

emil.y, Thursday, 12 January 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

anyone seen BT before, do they put on a good show? I am most interested in them and the softies. I'd really love to meet rose melberg. :0

want to go desperately, maybe I will, I am onl liek 6 hrs away. too bad I missed the passes tho.

marc iv, Thursday, 12 January 2012 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

Saw Black Tambourine a zillion years ago and just vaguely remember them being decent and enjoyable but not overwhelmingly charismatic and exciting onstage.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 12 January 2012 21:41 (fourteen years ago)

i reckon they'll be great, pam's voice is better than ever these days

back in gloom (electricsound), Thursday, 12 January 2012 22:04 (fourteen years ago)

(the vocals she's done for the latest bart & friends recording are stunning)

Along with me. Will be there on the first night, most definitely.

Though if anyone gets an update on when tickets go on sale for the VA shows, can they let me know? I called the venue and they said they'd call me back. I was surprised, and they haven't called back yet, which I'm not surprised about.

I need to see the Lilys more than anything.

Evan, Thursday, 12 January 2012 23:55 (fourteen years ago)

Had heard rumours of Black Tambourine doing some shows this year but I presumed that to be confusion born out of the existence of the band The Black Tambourines. Yeay! Hoping for some Indietrack action from them and Pipas.. although Chickfactor are on about doing a London date too, although with different bands.

Yeah Yeah Bohney (Craigo Boingo), Friday, 13 January 2012 12:11 (fourteen years ago)

I somehow missed Pam Berry's solo effort

curmudgeon, Friday, 13 January 2012 15:35 (fourteen years ago)

The Aislers Set reunion at the Fortuna Pop anniversary shows was astoundingly wonderful.

Bah. Too bad Fortuna Pop didn't have any other bands playing I was interested in, I missed this.

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Friday, 13 January 2012 15:37 (fourteen years ago)

saw bunch of these bands back in the day, wd prob go for Bridget St John if I still went to many shows.

two weeks pass...

The VA shows just went on sale, I don't think I can afford making the trip from (essentially) NYC, then find a place to stay. Sucks because I've never seen the Lilys (they'll probably have more of an incentive to play the early stuff- which is the whole reason I'd see them), and they're one of my favorite bands ever, like top five. And Lorelei are great too.

Anyone planning to go to that/buying tickets right now after reading the beginning of this post?

Evan, Saturday, 4 February 2012 00:08 (fourteen years ago)

It'll also be close to my birthday! Hopefully The Lilys decide to play a bit more north at some point.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 11:17 (fourteen years ago)

So you're playing in NYC and visiting the DC area.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 13:41 (fourteen years ago)

First Virginia show is on the first night of Passover. Hmmm, do an early dinner/seder and then go to Artisphere...?

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 13:44 (fourteen years ago)

Curmudgeon, yes, would be good to see you (have we ever met?) in DC at one of those Easter weekend shows.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

We have not met. But yes, it would be nice to meet.

Have the Pines been added to one of the Va shows?

Curmudgeon: yes, thanks for asking, we are playing on Friday 6th April at Artisphere.

the pinefox, Thursday, 29 March 2012 11:49 (fourteen years ago)

Excellent. Still need to figure out my Passover dinner plans to see if I can make it.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 29 March 2012 13:54 (fourteen years ago)

I can make it! Hope to meet you Friday.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 5 April 2012 15:13 (fourteen years ago)

this seems like a good time.
does bridget st. john play many shows?

tylerw, Thursday, 5 April 2012 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

It looks like she is just doing a Brooklyn gig April 11th; and a 1999 Chickfactor interview with her is on their website

curmudgeon, Thursday, 5 April 2012 15:35 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, i figured she was mostly retired from music? i know she guested on a (pretty darn good) elisa randazzo record a few years back...

tylerw, Thursday, 5 April 2012 15:39 (fourteen years ago)

She appeared at the sixth Terrastock in Providence -- good set, I thought.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:09 (fourteen years ago)

The Pines are still not listed for tonight's gig at Artisphere. I hope they are playing

curmudgeon, Friday, 6 April 2012 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

Kinda smallish turnout for night 1. The event is a bit too pricey. Pam still has a nice voice.

curmudgeon, Saturday, 7 April 2012 14:53 (fourteen years ago)

And hearing Pinefox add harmonies for Stevie Jackson from down in the crowd was awesome

curmudgeon, Saturday, 7 April 2012 16:48 (fourteen years ago)

where the videos at? i hope it's just too soon and they haven't been uploaded yet. if there isn't comprehensive video footage of black tambourine i am gonna kill myself.

marc iv, Monday, 9 April 2012 20:16 (fourteen years ago)

Uh oh. I think they're at Maxwells in Hoboken tonight

curmudgeon, Monday, 9 April 2012 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

anyone wanna guess at the odds of the aisler's set doing any further reunion gigs at this point?

like a musical album. made by a band. (fucking in the streets), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 02:19 (fourteen years ago)

Maxwells show was pretty good! Charmingly sloppy and a bit shy, but so great to see them live. Will be there tomorrow (Bell House) to see Versus and Small Factory too.

Evan, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 05:03 (fourteen years ago)

Went to Bell House show last night... incredible! Everyone!
Wish all these bands were still making this music

juicebox, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

Well I screwed up: had bought the tickets so long ago that I forgot what day it was. Damn. Would love to hear more about it, especially Small Factory. Any detailed reports, either here or elsewhere?

dlp9001, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

So great!

Dump were the special guests, as well as Mark Robinson, but he only played Yes She Is My Skinhead Girl and Isabel.
Lois was great, the only artist I wasn't as familiar with.
Versus was next, and besides one new song they played a lot of really old songs that they described as being "chickfactor enough" Pretty awesome performance overall.
Small Factory were very fun, Phoebe described their billing between Versus and Black Tambourine as "a weird piece of meat between two delicious pieces of bread." They played Valentine so the night was made.
Black Tambourine were next and Pam was so shy and sweet on stage. Their sound was much better than at Maxwells the night before (bass didn't sound right then) and they were totally enchanting. A harmless little moshing occurred during the peppier songs and the dreamier songs were just gorgeous.

Evan, Thursday, 12 April 2012 04:40 (fourteen years ago)

versus doing old stuff is the show i am feeling the most envy about

scumulator (electricsound), Thursday, 12 April 2012 04:50 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, they played:

Forest Fire
Insomnia
Be-9
River

etc.

Evan, Thursday, 12 April 2012 05:26 (fourteen years ago)

What time is everyone congregating tonight?

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 12 April 2012 21:48 (fourteen years ago)

what am I missing... i see the flyer says portland and I would totally travel to relive my early 90s indi pop love.

Jen Echo, Thursday, 12 April 2012 22:12 (fourteen years ago)

I have really loved being on this chickfactor tour. I think it has been one of the best weeks of my whole life.

Saw Curmudgeon last Friday and glad he didn't mind my harmonies. Saw Lorelei play a flawless 'sight of you' as song #2. Have seen Black Tambourine in 3 different states of the union. Last night saw The Softies play their first show in 12 years and played what I thought was the best Pines show ever, with Rose Melberg singing with us. Best set I've actually seen, though: The Aislers Set, confirming the sense that they are one of the great bands in the history of pop.

And so many good people around all the time that every night has felt less like a gig, more like a surprise party.

the pinefox, Friday, 13 April 2012 12:55 (fourteen years ago)

Couldn't make the Aislers Set night... so painful to have had to choose, but I'm so happy to have seen Small Factory (Versus is not as rare a performance these days) and it was a treat to have Dump surprise us with a great set.

Especially sad that I didn't see the Lilys play. Hope someday in my life I get another shot.

Evan, Friday, 13 April 2012 14:08 (fourteen years ago)

Since the Lilys was just Kurt playing solo, I imagine he will play again. Who knows.

Was great meeting you PF, and I enjoyed your Pines set with Pam.

curmudgeon, Saturday, 14 April 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

Oh was he only solo? Interesting, couldn't find any reaction to his set anywhere, or videos.

Evan, Saturday, 14 April 2012 23:53 (fourteen years ago)

the june 11 lineup would have been my absolute dream lineup in '94

pop crimer (electricsound), Monday, 8 April 2013 22:23 (thirteen years ago)

Almost literally my dream line up right now, specifically that day too.

Evan, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 02:06 (thirteen years ago)

Just NYC this year? No DC? or elsewhere

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 13:43 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I guess not. :/

Evan, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 14:00 (thirteen years ago)

scheming to get to new york for this, the venue is like 8 blocks from my in-laws' place. what's the venue like? is this gonna sell out quickly? for all those hip brooklyn kids that love the cannanes

adam, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

The venue is wonderful, my favorite room of its size in NY. Its comfortable even when sold out. This will probably sell out.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Tuesday, 9 April 2013 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

It may sell out quick, yes. Unless it already has but I haven't checked.

Venue is very nice- spacious, new looking. I like it. Just a bit of a trip for me all the way from Hoboken, and I'm going all three nights.

That should have said "Gail isn't." Clientele are coming back here, but not with the others.
