voted "I didn't believe it did at the time and I still don't" for the most accurate results but my heart says "fuck you, kanye"

lame adele rey (some dude), Thursday, 12 January 2012 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

even people who like the album will be hard pressed not to vote 'fuck you, kanye' but no, it's not very good

Maybe it is more accurate to vote "I didn't believe it did at the time and I still don't" but I went with my heart and voted "fuck you, kanye"

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 12 January 2012 21:37 (fourteen years ago)

err my grammar is off but you get what I'm saying

iatee, Thursday, 12 January 2012 21:40 (fourteen years ago)

i still like this album a lot. probably not "perfect score" but maybe an 8.5?

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 12 January 2012 21:43 (fourteen years ago)

85% perfect

one dis leads to another (ian), Thursday, 12 January 2012 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I think it's alright, but nowhere near perfect score material.

emil.y, Thursday, 12 January 2012 21:47 (fourteen years ago)

Kanye himself deserves a 10, for being Kanye imo

sleepingbag, Thursday, 12 January 2012 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

kinda feel like the final world would really be re-doing this poll w/ this album in it: ***RANKING KANYE***

lame adele rey (some dude), Thursday, 12 January 2012 21:52 (fourteen years ago)

don't think we can push ilx's server software to do all the possible permutations of 5 albums

bob loblaw people (dayo), Thursday, 12 January 2012 21:53 (fourteen years ago)

true, but you could do every variation of 'top 3' and get pretty much the same results

lame adele rey (some dude), Thursday, 12 January 2012 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

voted "fuck you Kanye" found everything about the lead up to this album so irritating I never bothered to hear the whole thing

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 12 January 2012 21:55 (fourteen years ago)

Suspect that the acclaim accorded MBDTF (a gross but entertainingly unhinged mess of an album) will destroy Kanye and whatever might otherwise have remained of his career.

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Thursday, 12 January 2012 22:10 (fourteen years ago)

okay, half suspect...

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Thursday, 12 January 2012 22:26 (fourteen years ago)

It's a fucking horrible record and I said so at the time. Fuck you, Kanye. You used to be good.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 12 January 2012 22:48 (fourteen years ago)

iatee, Thursday, 12 January 2012 22:48 (fourteen years ago)

I can't imagine feeling the need to ever listen to it again. There's enough decent material to push it into solid six out of ten range but the worst stuff is absolutely intolerable. Thought so at the time, haven't changed my mind.

Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Thursday, 12 January 2012 22:57 (fourteen years ago)

Terrible terrible record. Shame on everyone who hyped it so much.

Jamie_ATP, Thursday, 12 January 2012 22:59 (fourteen years ago)

i dig it. not perfect but whatever.

i haven't heard MBDTF but would vote "fuck me, kanye".

jed_, Monday, 30 January 2012 00:32 (thirteen years ago)

started listening to this album a few months ago, after i heard "super bass" i listened to all her singles and the best was monster so ithought i'd check it out. amazing album, it convinced me to start listening to hiphop again, although it may have spoiled me as obv nothing sounds like this.

marc iv, Monday, 30 January 2012 00:38 (thirteen years ago)

i didn't believe it at the time, but i keep coming back to the tracks on it, All of the Lights, Dark Fantasy, Monster, Runaway... esp while driving. so i feel like it deserves it more now than i did then.

I like this album. I don't listen to it as much as 808 & Graduation, but i like it more than his other two. It's far from a perfect album, obviously, but don't believe the hype etc

Euler, Monday, 30 January 2012 01:33 (thirteen years ago)

lol that gif is cracking me up kev

dayo, Monday, 30 January 2012 02:05 (thirteen years ago)

all the people who said this is a terrible record are criminally insane and overcompensating for their kanye hate

Neanderthal, Monday, 30 January 2012 03:48 (thirteen years ago)

good album, better than graduation and that's about it. has its really inspired moments, also has some crap. solid mid-8s record imo.

J0rdan S., Monday, 30 January 2012 03:50 (thirteen years ago)

I'd probably be wiling to listen to it again if it got remastered, and if they cut the running length in half.

Poon Aggroved (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Monday, 30 January 2012 07:14 (thirteen years ago)

it didn't get "universal" music journo plaudits :)

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Monday, 30 January 2012 08:56 (thirteen years ago)

i have not changed my mind about this thing though in actual fact i have not felt compelled to return to it at all in the past year.

it is definitely not better than graduation, that is the actual insane opinion around here

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Monday, 30 January 2012 08:57 (thirteen years ago)

Grotesque record, albeit interestingly so. Even at this remove those perfect scores look Be Here Now-esque.

Meme Rogers (DL), Monday, 30 January 2012 09:04 (thirteen years ago)

Ye Here Now

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Monday, 30 January 2012 09:06 (thirteen years ago)

Just as with Be Here Now the neurotic tendency to overdo even the good ideas is compelling/revolting. As soon I think I'm enjoying a track some elephantine coda comes along to stamp all the joy out of it.

The curate's egg analogy has become misused by critics to mean a mixed bag but this perfectly fits the original definition.

Bishop: "I'm afraid you've got a bad egg, Mr Jones"
Curate: "Oh, no, my Lord, I assure you that parts of it are excellent!"

Meme Rogers (DL), Monday, 30 January 2012 09:48 (thirteen years ago)

Great job music critics. You now have this decade's 3 Years, 5 Months...

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 03:02 (thirteen years ago)

...is what I'd be saying if every single Kanye West album didn't get a 10.0/5 stars/universal music journo plaudits.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 03:03 (thirteen years ago)

@op: sure, why not?

the parable is the parable of the (Lamp), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 04:12 (thirteen years ago)

it's a very good album, with lots of the kind of stuff those music critics really go apeshit for (weirdness! prog! black guy doing edgy music!) those things haven't changed, + watch the throne wasn't universally-panned-thus-causing-a-complete-retroactive-reevaluation-of-kanye's-entire-discography, so i think safe to say that in the rarified world of where critics give numbers to records, it still is a 10 out of 10. in further ever so slightly ambivalent terms, i think people will continue to rate this as an all-time-classic rap album in a couple decades, when it will still be selling at a respectable pace, thus bolstering its original critical assessment.

now, personally i don't neccesarily think it's a *perfect* record. but then, when i read "10/10!!!!!! OMFG SO PERFECT" i actually i took that to mean "ok, this should be an exceptionally solid album that also pushes lots of critic's buttons, which means i'll probably dig it, a lot, cause i too like weirdness and king crimson samples and rap guys that push sonic boundaries". and this album has not suddenly become sucky on repeated listens by any means. so if i weren't too late i would join the vast herd of 7 who "believed so a year ago and still believe that MBDTF deserved a perfect score"

messiahwannabe, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 07:57 (thirteen years ago)

actually i think watch the throne deserved a perfect score more than mbdtf, but neither was technically perfect. i'd put it at 9.2/9.5 respectively. why not just round up to 10? the 8.5-or-so scores wtt tended to get were lowball imho

messiahwannabe, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 08:01 (thirteen years ago)

Graduation loses a ton of steam around "Everything I Am", which is such a slogfest that it undercuts the actually-not-at-all-bad songs that follow it.
