Khia: Classic Or Dud?

I got "My Neck My Back" off Filepile ages ago assuming it was some old classic and I loved it, and then I put it on a tape for Isabel and it's her favourite track of the year (pending Missy) and now I find it's apparently all over the place and becoming a big hit, and NOW I download another track by her ("Jealous Girls") and it's really good too, like L'Trimm grown up all skanky and hostile. So, yes, who is she, and classic or dud?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 13 September 2002 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

My Neck My Back is an absolute classic -- I was very surprised at how poorly it did in the U.S. Haven't heard any others although I think the one you mentioned is the new single. She seemed almost too brazen in her sexuality combined with image leaning more toward 'hood rat' than, say, Lil' Kim or Foxy Brown, and it seems as if it caught a bit of a backlash. (that's the feeling I got from the admittedly small sample of African-American females I know -- all of whom seem to hate her and the song.) In those respects it reminds me of Adina Howard's "Freak Like Me."

I'm not saying the record store where I work(ed) is necessarily a good barometer of how well records do in the U.S., but we sold a TON of copies of the Khia record there, which surprised me because I hadn't heard much about it. I'm not sure whether your assessment of "My Neck My Back"'s performance is based on sales figures, but if not my hunch would be that the numbers would surprise you.

Why does nobody else want to tell me about Khia???

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 14 September 2002 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't know about the new single, but I imagine "My Neck, My Back" is slightly hamstrung from a commercial-perspective by its bouncier-than-bounce production (which I love) - a bit '99 for current audiences? It's great anyway, and demands a Miami Bass or ghetto-tech remix.

Also, the suspicion that it's actually B.G. in a dress might be mildly offputing.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 14 September 2002 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

The new single is really retro-bass too. There is a remix kicking around which slows it down and dirties it up even more and has an odd comedy-stoner sung interlude about pussy.

i saw the album today, does anyone have it and should i have it too?

minna (minna), Sunday, 31 August 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I have it. It's OK, you can get it really cheap in some London places (like £2 new cheap). Apart from "My Neck" and "Jealous Girls" the only other really good track is "When I Meet My King" but it's all quite listenable.

Dammit, the only one's I've heard are "My Neck", "Jealous Girls" and "When I Meet My King", all of which are ace, so now you're telling me they're the only good ones?

Those songs listed above are not her only good songs- that "Kang Wang With It" song is awes.

I do like that she continued the "My Neck, My Back" tradition of having the video have as little as possible to do with the theme. I mean, it's not quite as detached from its content as having a backyard barbecue or whatever was going on back in 2002, but I sort of appreciate not going for the utterly on-the-nose or too many cutesy innuendos or whatever. Beat is nice RZA-retro. Khia's not really doing much tho, gotta say.

I love how that guy she is supposedly seducing in the video keeps giving a "not again" look to the camera.

she released a new album this year and it's KIND OF AMAZING. she threatens to snatch a fake breast within a minute of it opening and there's a six-minute smooth r&b jam called "dickmatize".

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Saturday, 1 December 2012 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

the tempo-shifting "turn you out" is another highlight. SOMETIMES I FUCK LIKE A GIRL SOMETIMES I FUCK LIKE A BOY

so is the very freelancer-relevant "fuck a promo" in which she refuses to work for free

the "no one denies this pussy" skit is O_O

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Saturday, 1 December 2012 22:24 (thirteen years ago)

"lick me dry", brassy and cheerfully good-natured smut of the sort that you just don't get any more

i hadn't, i don't like it as much as the original though. i think the main thing that stops me really loving ballroom stuff is that i can't stand the penchant to get stuck on one word or phrase over and over again, it's all stuck-record tension and no release

this was not cool:

One-hit wonder rapper Khiaappears to have fired not-so-subtle shots at Odd Future crooner Frank Ocean after he set the record straight on his sexuality.

Last week, Frank bravely penned a powerful letter in which he revealed he fell in love with a man at the age of 19, putting to rest the rumours of his sexuality. Along with the rest of the music world, Khia has added her two cents in regards to the revelation but seems to have subliminally dissed the singer.

“Hats Off To Frank Ocean At Least He Finally Told The Truth Now All The Women He Fooled Can Finally Know The Truth!!” Khia wrote on Twitter.
“I Wrote A Book About It!! Be Sure To Get It Khia’s New Book Ignoring The Signs!!! LAWD HAVE MERCEY ON THEIR SOULS!!”

But that song transcended age, race, and nations. I’ve been to Greece, the Netherlands, you know, all over with that song. They don’t even know how to speak English, but they know how to say “Pussy” and “Crack” and “Neck” and “Back.”
