nas - it was written poll

been listening to this a lot lately - i've been a nas partisan since i was in middle school but only in the past year really realized how much of a classic this is, and how underappreciated it is - particularly given how it seems to live in illmatic's shadow when it's really almost as strong and contains some of nas' best writing. what up to this thread and dk.

this is my fave Nas album (challops, whatever) so this is totally impossible to me

but the song that instantly popped into my head when I read the title was "take it in blood" so I will vote for that.

hey how about more posts about this amazing album?

sample source notwithstanding, "the message" seems to be a perfect opener to follow up on illmatic - genuinely haunting production and nas is at his lyrical and vocal best. as i said before, "black girl lost" is probably my sleeper favorite, so many great moments in that song, from the moment the beat drops in, to jo-jo's hook, and nas's flow on that song is really just insane, there's all sorts of problems i'm sure from like a feminist perspective into which i honestly haven't put a lot of thought, but the tone of his voice really perfectly suits the subject matter, for better or worse. it's detached, almost parental. has some of his most intricate rhymes too, i always have to rewind and play the part i quoted a few posts ago.

guest verses on this are all top notch too; i really should listen to that the firm record but just in terms of solo careers and odds & ends elsewhere, the firm > la familia

hey whiney what is your favorite song on nas's album "it was written"?

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Friday, 20 January 2012 06:00 (thirteen years ago)

The sub bass on Take It In The Blood is forcing me to vote for it, song's got some kind of bounce to it. Best sounding beat on the lp.

RIP classic era Nas

tried to think of something to vote for other than "Take It In Blood" but nah it's gotta be that. although if "Album Intro" was an option that'd be my joke vote, just smh on so many levels.

eleven years pass...

weird revive sry (didn't want to revive a will smith topic)—

i forgot how much nas was working with will smith back in these days. he received a co-writing credit on big willie style —for one of the album's highlights and i will defend that as an overall good poprap album— and his song from the men in black soundtrack is delicious fluff. columbia records connection paid off?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H81EpRefJ7I

nas — "escobar `97" (1997)

nas also co-wrote will's `other` song from that soundtrack—

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFsCb4yRIJw

will smith — "just cruisin`" (1997)

which i will also defend. how many product placements can you spot?

i hate how appealing it all is. very ridiculous music. it was written was a masterpiece in comparison.

(there's also that ahem now hilarious skit on big willie style where jada _physically assaults_ an annoying male reporter who hits on her. did anyone talk about that? i know, wrong place; but i had forgotten and you know: oh my, the irony.)

holy fuck -- weird. I was listening and marveling at "I Gave You Power" this afternoon. Too many years.

“Take it in blood” maybe my favorite Nas song period

brimstead, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 02:34 (two years ago)

I have mixed feelings about "I Gave You Power" but he really jacked that concept from Organized Konfusion "Stray Bullet"

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 29 March 2023 02:38 (two years ago)

he did bite the concept from ok, ums. i always felt like nas' version was at least strong. like at least he came correct, y'know. thought it was funny how he announces the metaphor before the first verse even begins. but okay did name theirs after the actual thing. at least nas gave the listener enough credit to not put the metaphor in the title lol.

i love that one too, brimstead. probably my favorite thing on this album anyway. oddly produced by a guy farmed from the digital underground family tree. such a sick beat. would i be misguided in saying it's kind of a dubstep progenitor? that absolutely huge bassline! also shoutout to nasty nas and my immature ass waiting for "PUSSIES AND BUTTHOLES" and ignoring some of his best lyrics ever

hi alfred. just living life. hope you're well?

(honestly no explanation. just went with this thread because it's closest to nas' "WILL SMITH" period.)

''i am the kanye west kanye west thinks he is.'' (Austin), Wednesday, 29 March 2023 02:52 (two years ago)

I think I Gave You Power was great

I just thought it was kinda lame he bit it from some old Stretch and Bobbito fellow travellers cuz he knew they weren't popular and know one would know.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 29 March 2023 02:54 (two years ago)

knew no one would know.....god I'm bad at writing today

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 29 March 2023 02:55 (two years ago)

not to worry on both fronts: i knew at the time. and i'm bad at it every day.
