Nine Bands From the '90s Underground That Should Consider Reuniting
Houston Press - April Brem Patrick

Everyone was all abuzz about the reunion announcements of Refused and At the Drive-In this week. I was less abuzz. I never much cared for Refused (nor International Noise Conspiracy) and I was one of those people that liked ATDI "before" (and I certainly had no need for Mars Volta). And they're not the only ones throwing their hats back in the ring. Last year we saw new releases from The Get Up Kids and Braid.

The Promise Ring are gearing up to play some dates next month, and just yesterday Murder City Devils released their first songs in over ten years. If you were into underground music in the late '90s you've got an opinion on all of these things. And I've got an opinion on bands from that era that I'd like to see get out there again. Most of these bands broke up by 2000 (with a couple of exceptions being later or way way earlier), but all were pretty important to kids who were lucky enough to come of age in the "Hands Up Houston" era. Maybe they could reunite and then book these bands. How about it?

No write-in option this time although feel free to discuss any glaring omissions...

I cannot imagine Fugazi not winning this one, nor does my love for Bikini Kill change my vote either.

Rocket from the Crypt? Jawbox? Heavens to Betsy? The Field Mice? Beat Happening? Softies? Heavenly? What does "should consider" even mean, btw? "Underground?"

(I mean, Fugazi wins this, but of course ... they never broke up! They're as busy as ever! They're still friends! Etc.)

I actually don't know much about a lot of these bands, though the ones I do know I like. Would probably vote Bikini Kill.

... the most overrated album of the indie era

Ed Love (rip van wanko), Sunday, 15 January 2012 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

I liked The Peechees, but I could give a fuck about them getting back together. This is really between Bikini Kill and Fugazi, and I think I'd have to give the edge to Bikini Kill over Fugazi (despite liking Fugazi more) because I want to hear what they'd come up with now that they're all around 40.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 January 2012 17:31 (fourteen years ago)

Fugazi easily, but I'd love to see Nation of Ulysses tour again. So much better as a live band than a studio one.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 15 January 2012 17:35 (fourteen years ago)

actively clamouring for old bands to get back together seems just as weird and creepy as getting butthurt and defensive when they do

I might vote Sarge because I have no idea at all who or what that is

xposts the Softies are playing a gig in a couple of months for the Chickfactor anniversary. Dunno if that's a one-off though.

Have no idea who Sarge are, so I'm voting for them and pretending it says Rodan instead.

I certainly wouldn't have, but hey. (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 15 January 2012 19:47 (fourteen years ago)

Sarge was a not bad punkish-pop band from Champaign, IL, fronted by Elizabeth ... I forget her last name - Elmore? - but she was a strong lyricist, which is why people paid attention to them. At least as much as they paid attention to the Chainsaw Kittens or whatever.

I'd like to see Bikini Kill get on stage, play "Rebel Girl" and then set fire to a bunch of magazines and burn the whole place down by mistake.

the answer to this question is always Walt Mink

The Grifters have played some shows over the years and you never know what would come of it, but I always liked their records and would like another one if they could pull it off.

earlnash, Sunday, 15 January 2012 22:21 (fourteen years ago)

'the glass intact' by sarge is one of my favourite albums from this era. so them.

back in gloom (electricsound), Sunday, 15 January 2012 22:37 (fourteen years ago)

Would love to see Grifters get back together.

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Monday, 16 January 2012 04:24 (fourteen years ago)

man, i love a shitload of '90s bands but i really can barely think of any (that are broken up w/ all members still alive etc.) that i'd be genuinely excited about hearing that they reunited. Fugazi i guess would be one but i don't even know how that would work, since their whole approach to being a band barely worked at their past level of popularity and the demand would just be through the roof if they did play again but it's not like they're gonna play fuckin' Coachella and sell out a bunch of theaters.

some dude, Monday, 16 January 2012 04:26 (fourteen years ago)

Early Red Red Meat is a fantastic idea.

Man Sarge was awesome you guys. So was Elizabeth Elmore's more recent band, The Reputation. But they won't reunite because afaik, Elmore is deep into her legal career and really isn't in a place to focus on music in the least.
