I am in montreal for the week having a look around. If there are any ilm'ers in the area who could give me a heads up, I would appreciate it. The Mekons are playing a couple days before we leave, and that seems pretty decent. Unfortunately, the Montreal pop festival is happening after we leave, so we will have to miss Blonde Redhead.
Any good venue, bar, or show info would help greatly. Thanks in advance!

Bright Eyes are playing on Monday and Spoon on Thursday, both at
Casa Del Popolo. I don't know if you're still here by then, but Enon (with Brendan Benson) is playing the 24th. There's also a Def Jux bill with EL-P, RJD2 and Mr.Lif on Friday the 20th. Casa [4873 St. Laurent 514-284-3804]usually has good bands playing there, Jupiter Room [3872 St-Laurent, 514-844-4717] also hosts some gigs and there's an 80s night on Thursdays that's a bit cheesy but it's always fun and packed after midnight, Barfly [4062A St Laurent] has local bands... Blizzarts [3958A St-Laurent] doesn't have bands, but there's always decent music spinning there. I've concentrated everything into one street for convenience, but there's a lot going around elsewhere. Your best bet is to pick up a weekly (Hour, Montreal Mirror) for listings. Hmm, yeah, you can also browse
here and maybe something will turn up. Oh and I've haven't been in ages, but I remember
Les Foufounes Electriques being pretty fun. I don't know if you're here tonight, but Heiko Laux (from the Kanzleramt label) is here tonight at the
SAT, which is always a cool venue. Anyway, you're bound to meet people who'll tell you what's going on in this town. Enjoy our Canadian dollar!

Here's a rundown of good basic casual nights (in my estimation--consider that I have lived here for 8 years and have narrowed down my choices A LOT):
Tuesday, Le Sugar (on St. Laurent just above Prince Arthur): TOUCH
Used to be a lame bar, but since Grandtheft and Krinjah have started spinning good music-and inviting folks like P Love, it's been fantastic. $3-but you get a free beer.
Wednesday, Blizzarts (St. Laurent just below Deluth): CHAMPION SOUND
Dancehall, dub, roots, reggae of all types. DJs Andy Williams, Wig, Ms. B, and Micah are lovely people, sometimes Amon Tobin has been known to show up. Highly recommended.
Thursday, Le Parking (Gay Village--can't remember exactly where, sorry!) Great music, mixed night, can't lose.
Friday, Blizzarts: BRASS KNUCKLES
Just good music--reggae, hip hop, rock, funk, etc. etc. Blizzarts is pretty good all nights.
If you want to drink, go to Miami on St. Laurent, Bifteck (if you're desperate), Billy Kun (on Mount Royal), Skala (on Parc near St. Joseph--a drinking hole that must be esperienced to be believed) Casa Del Popolo - as mentioned above - has good live acts and Salla Rosa (across the street) often has good events. Lots of variety.
I could probably go on for ever, actually. Writing this has reminded me why I love this place.
Ah, Montreal, c'est toi ma ville!
