looking for hyper mellow music with a crazed approach to vocals or just the opposite if you want: harsh/dissonant stuff with a very melodic singer on top of it. i do enjoy music w/ that sort of contrasting effect where you have voice and instruments colliding or going in totally different directions but i'm having a hard time thinking about specific examples. i guess storm & stress or early gastr del sol could fit in here, or some AOR gone nuts such as jun togawa (her 80s stuff at least) but i'm not really sure

like it's not 'hyper mellow' or 'crazed' respectively but I think there's a contrast that rubs a lot of ppl the wrong way

for the first category I'm thinking maybe Current 93? often mellow folky instrumentation with Tibet ranting eschatologically over the top.

now that this has been said, i want there to be more music like this. harsh noise with smooth, melodic vocals overtop. sedate, mainstream shlock accompanied by freakish vocal insanity.

Funny that I just listened to a Long Fin Killie live set I downloaded from dime some time ago. Been a long time since I last listened and I put it on my computer's player a few days ago only to get delayed in returning to listen to it. So odd that the day i finally do so somebody else is talking about them. Not sure how well remembered they are. Think i had a cd by them too, not sure what it was lp or ep. Didn't find it as I just sorted through the bulk of my stuff trying to fill a 20GB ATRAC walkman. Funny, thought 20GB would be way more than adequate and it still left me with a lot of stuff I wanted to add when I'd filled it.

harsh noise with smooth, melodic vocals overtop
Some of David Sylvian's later stuff definitely falls into this category imo.

Lou Reed & Metallica.
this aspect of C93's sound has a precedent though, cf. Comus, Sand

they're personal favorites but i don't think there's a renewed interest in them or anything. dying to hear the live set you mention, non studio stuff from LFK is pretty scarce as far as i know
