Mellow/Somber Ambient Albums

So, I'm getting over a breakup and I just want to wallow myself in this sadness with some songs but I run out of sad songs. One day I listened to this track by M83 for the first time and I think, this is perfect for my situation. So, anyone has some recommendation? I'm not well-versed in ambient music. Thanks. Oh, here's the track:

tim hecker, later period stars of the lid, aloof proof's piano text, rubycon-era tangerine dream, klf's chill out, tujiko noriko, oren ambarchi (but maybe not emo enough here), throbbing gristle's part two: the endless not

Maybe Dominic Woosey's Straylight? It has a few "cosmic" moments typical of early 90s ambient, but mostly it's a low-key and melancholic album:

Then there's of course Biosphere's classic Substrata, you can't get much more somber than that:

I've checked some of the recommendation but I don't know, they're good but don't really evoke the sentimental side of me. Not "emo" enough, if you like. Except stars of the lid, but I've already known them. Anyway, I was searching someplace else and found these bands that are closer to what I'm looking for: Hammock, Eluvium and A Winged Victory For The Sullen

Isn't there a thread about indie classical like Max Richter? I'd say that's pretty emo ambient, maybe even sounds like M83?

The "classical" music you buy from Boomkat (2010): a thread to discuss Sylvain Chauveau, Johann Johannsson, Peter Broderick, Olafur Arnalds and others

A Winged Victory for the Sullen (adam wiltzie from Stars of the Lid plus piano composer dude Dustin O'Halloran) has a really emo name but the S/T from last year will make you stare out the window and agonize about your past in a good way

Why didn't anyone tell me that A Winged Victory for the Sullen was Adam Wiltzie?? That sounds liek my kind of afternoon.

I was gonna say, the correct answer here is Eluvium, but you figured it out on your own. Well done.

If I were you, I'd get everything he has ever done. One of the finest, most beautiful catalogs of music ever.

have you ever heard "return to innocence" by Enigma

frogs you are the dumbest asshole (frogbs), Sunday, 22 January 2012 07:58 (fourteen years ago)

Most classic ambient (pre-Aphex, and non-New Age) can qualify. Since you like Hammock (who I think are sublime), can I suggest you look into the back catalogue of Jeff Pearce:

Celer qualifies here as well, especially the albums with just one or two pieces

haha, I love Sasha's Airdrawndagger but I don't think any song from it fits as a soundtrack to my breakup.

My recommendations for bummed-out ambience:

Blithe Sons - We Walk The Young Earth
Rameses III - I Could Not Love You More
Richard Skelton - Landings
Grouper - Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill
Richard Youngs - Sapphie
Loscil - Endless Falls
Scott Tuma - Not For Nobody
Mountains - Sewn
Nils Frahm - Felt

Bummed out-ness guaranteed on almost all those (at least one of them is dedicated to a dead wife and another is about a dead dog). The last two are somewhat less down in the dumps, but they are both v v pretty.
