Taking Sides: Mercury Rev's "The Dark Is Rising" vs Julie Covington's "Don't Cry For Me Argentina"

These are two of the most melodramatic songs I can think of. The latter is a perennial favourite, the former I have to admit is almost as strong. What do you think - and of melodrama in pop in general?

tom, what happened to last year when you called all is dream "the biggest pile of shit i heard all year"? was this track just an exception.

i don't think i've ever knowingly heard the whole of "don't cry for me argentina."

"the dark is rising" is "the biggest pile of shit i heard all year."

melodrama is one of pop's great joys and also one of it's great sorrows. funny, that.

The album is the biggest pile of shit I heard all last year (and I know cos I just tried to listen to it again). It just has this great indie showtune leading it off. Also I'm drunk.

(Plus if you check my NYLPM review of this track you'll see me being super-ambivalent.)

You should hear "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" all the way through cos it's better than any post-punk.

I'm downloading as many versions as I can for comparison's sake. Will Oldham?? Who knew!

will oldham's version = a disappointment. though nowhere near as disappointing as his version of send in the clowns which = the worst thing ever.

I know he'd do SITC badly (an even BETTER song than DCFMA) but I had hopes for this one. The guy I was downloading from disconnected.

The guy I was downloading from disconnected.

This is what happens when you dont contribute with the p2p revolution

vic (vicc13), Saturday, 14 September 2002 23:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah but it was only Will Oldham.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 14 September 2002 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeh, but he made one of the best albums ever. Or, even, two.

There's Is No-one What Will Take Care of Me and the second one, all acoustic affair - both have these really unsettling can't quite place it weirdnesses;

...is that a mist struggling to strangle the sun, but a tincture of warmth remains on the air...

And for this, he should be commended. Maybe?

david h (david h), Sunday, 15 September 2002 00:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh don't get me wrong I like Will Oldham but not as an interpreter of songs.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 15 September 2002 09:16 (twenty-three years ago)

B...b...but also, his More Revery is amazing (all covers) but saying this I am the only person who I have met who loves it. Maybe I'll tell you why some.

david h (david h), Sunday, 15 September 2002 09:47 (twenty-three years ago)

look, stop doing this, don't try and make me think that 'all is dream' is any good at all. i haven't heard it, and i don't want to, not after the monstrosity that was Deserters Song (worst album of 90s etc etc TM - gareth)

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 15 September 2002 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

i mean, don't get me started thinking they'll do anything as good as Everlasting Arm again
