Hell, what happened to Old Skull?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 15 September 2002 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Here's an answer to an unasked question: "Llora" by Tito Gomez.

I want to go out dancing!

DeRayMi, Sunday, 15 September 2002 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

yes all covers of "Outdoor Miner" suck (even Wire's piano-y single version is sappy) and all covers of "The 15th" suck ... hint hint the ElectroClash's new clothes... Wire ain't to be fucked wit!

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 15 September 2002 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

What exactly is a contact microphone?

DeRayMi, Sunday, 15 September 2002 01:05 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it's the ones you stick on windows and such to hear what's going on inside. it's on some spy shit!

ron (ron), Sunday, 15 September 2002 01:09 (twenty-three years ago)

John Cage used contact microphones, but I was never sure what they were. I've always wanted to use one, but I'm not sure what they are.

DeRayMi, Sunday, 15 September 2002 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe John Cage was really a CIA agent.

DeRayMi, Sunday, 15 September 2002 01:17 (twenty-three years ago)

even Wire's piano-y single version is sappy

if I ruddy-well wanted to hear the ruddy musicboxdancer I'd have ruddy-well listened to the ruddy musicboxdancer

('cept I ruddy-well wouldn't've cos I heard the ruddy thing too damn ruddy-well much alruddy)

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 15 September 2002 01:44 (twenty-three years ago)

There's this Scarface song from around 1995-1996 that features 2Pac (credited as Makaveli, I believe). The video for the song involves a lot of rain and I think 2pac is on a crucifix or something. I think it was from a soundtrack. I remember liking this song when it came out, but now I don't know the name of it. Anyone know the song I'm taling about??

Justin M (Justin M), Sunday, 15 September 2002 04:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Why?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Sunday, 15 September 2002 04:09 (twenty-three years ago)

What?

nathalie (nathalie), Sunday, 15 September 2002 05:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Why does internet bandwidth cost? I ask this because whenever a small site gets popular it usually gets in trouble and has to ask for donations and stuff. I don't understand it. And yeah, it's not a music question...

Chriddof (Chriddof), Sunday, 15 September 2002 05:43 (twenty-three years ago)

the Face/Pac song is "Smile".

and actually, a few tours back Mike Watt & the Pair of Pliers did a really good cover of "The 15th", with some surprisingly solid vocal harmonies going on.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 15 September 2002 06:43 (twenty-three years ago)

the why?, the when?, the truth?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 15 September 2002 10:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Truth Hurts

vic (vicc13), Sunday, 15 September 2002 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

yes all covers of "Outdoor Miner" suck (even Wire's piano-y single version is sappy) and all covers of "The 15th" suck ... hint hint the ElectroClash's new clothes... Wire ain't to be fucked wit!

it's funny i'd agree that wire's version sucks, to me most bands sound better when they are covering wire except of course for wire.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 15 September 2002 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

In "Rock With You" what exactly does Michael mean by "...We can ride the boogie"?

brg30 (brg30), Sunday, 15 September 2002 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

''Truth Hurts''

so does love...thanks for cheering me up you.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 15 September 2002 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I vaguely remember one of Charles and Eddie being white. I don't remember which one.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 September 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Why are we here?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 15 September 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 15 September 2002 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

The surviving member of Charles & Eddie is white.

g.cannon (gcannon), Monday, 16 September 2002 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

ron - this link may be helpful:

zebedee, Monday, 16 September 2002 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

What's the name/album of the Mystere des Voix Bulgares track that's in a fast 7/8, in F minor, and has lyrics that I think sound like "Hey, ta ka, pa ta ka"? It would've been released sometime before 1993-1994, and is probably on the 1st or 2nd album.

Phil (phil), Monday, 16 September 2002 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

whatever happened to TQ?

jel -- (jel), Monday, 16 September 2002 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

What is said in the background at the end of Bowie's "Life On Mars"? something like "good take" I think, but can anyone else tell?

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 16 September 2002 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

What album is "Work It" on, then?

the forthcoming, as-yet-untitled one dropping in November. (I assume you mean the Missy Elliott song)

who do you luuuuuv?

you, of course, Custos

what happened to slum village? why are there only like 3 jay dee beats on this new album and who is this other cat??

Jay Dee left the group to concentrate on his solo career. The other cat isn't as good.

What exactly is a contact microphone?

a small mic that is placed on objects to amplify sounds indigenous to them--e.g. bouncing balls (see Aphex Twin). Ron's answer works also.

In "Rock With You" what exactly does Michael mean by "...We can ride the boogie"?

the line is "when you feel that beat/and we can ride the boogie/share that beat of love"--dancing as metaphor for love/making.

wot's a "bassbin?"

a very large subwoofer

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 16 September 2002 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Never mind, it's "Erghen Diado (Song Of Schopsko)".

Phil (phil), Monday, 16 September 2002 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

were pharell williams and kelis ever an item?

minna (minna), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 01:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan (or anyone else who knows): is there a technical term for when a singer sings the note just a little sharp (usually for dramatic or emotional emphasis)?

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 02:12 (twenty-three years ago)

whatever happened to TQ?

Last I heard of him, he was promoting German sub-Britney Sarah Connor, pathetically claiming to be "keepin' it gangsta around the world!" while gently fading into the background of what was perhaps that singer's least attrative effort, "Let's Get Back To Bed Boy" (yeah, I know, great sentiment and all, but alas...)

Knowing ILM, jel probably already knows this and is asking what happened to TQ after THAT, in which case I really can't help.

Daniel_Rf, Tuesday, 17 September 2002 02:29 (twenty-three years ago)

In "Can I Get A...", what is actually censored where on the radio we hear "What what"?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 06:48 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck you

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 07:02 (twenty-three years ago)

well actually it may be more complex than that but one of the things censored is fuck you. dunno about where what whats show up anywhere else if at all. (one of the official lyrics is whoop whoop)

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 07:04 (twenty-three years ago)

five months pass...
that piano bit on "providence" off 'daydream nation', is that an original sy faux-satie composition, or a ginyoowine classical piece from elsewhere? cos it came into my head today outta nowhere. and it's real pretty.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 10 March 2003 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

For all the Londoners: Is there anywhere on the web that has a listing on all upcoming shows in London for the next couple of months? (my trip is in May and I want to catch at least 1 show).

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

On the topic of Jay-Z,
what did the record labels do "to the cold crush" anyway?

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan (or anyone else who knows): is there a technical term for when a singer sings the note just a little sharp (usually for dramatic or emotional emphasis)?

(Months after the fact!)

I'm not sure. I would call it pointing the note, but I don't know if that's a technical term.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

mitch,

that is thurston on the piano on "providence".

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 01:21 (twenty-three years ago)

what is the classical sounding vocal sample at the start of cry me a river?

robin (robin), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

How come on some double LP's [seems to be US pressings only] from the 60s & 70s [only 2 specific examples that I have come to mind - Martha Reeves & the Vandellas 'Anthology' and the Kinks 'Kink Kronikles'] on one disc is Side 1 & 3 and the other disc is Sides 2 & 4? What was the rationale for this?
