TS: "Caravan" by Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington vs. "Caravan" by Van Morrison

The jazz D-bag in me says to pick the Juan Tizol composition, but the other one is the one I heard first, way back when during the initial run of The Last Waltz at the Ziegfeld, the only other patrons besides me being a half-dozen octogenarians who were only there to beat the heat at what they presumably assumed was a latter day Fred and Ginger tribute, their hearing sufficiently diminished so as not to feel physical pain caused by the deafening pool ball impact immediately after the title "This Movie Should Be Played Loud." And if you can't be sold by a squat chubby brown-pantsuit-wearing showgirl-kicking lowercase ginger Irishman, who can you be sold by?

initial reaction was the jazz d/b vote but truthfully the van morrison number is a stoned soul classic, so turn up yr radio, switch on yr electric light etc etc

speaking of classic - the Ziegfield story!

showgirl-kicking

Tizol/Ellington all the way. 1 trillion brilliant cover versions vs erm, none?

Realize this is an apples to oranges, punk meets godfather, long shot kick de bucket mismatch with a slim chance of an underdog upset, lacking as it does an indie wind in its sails that might propel it to the forefront, but get used to it Jake, this is ILXTown

Meant that he kicked like a showgirl or attempted to do so, Mark

Only thing that would make this performance better is if he kicked some showgirls at the end...

...well, maybe if he had a Harpo Marx bicycle horn tied around his waist. That would be cool too.

They are both pretty killer tunes. I think Van himself would probably tip his hat to the Duke in reverence.

The breakdown call and response part in Van's Caravan between the vocals and horns is just awesome.

Some pretty heavy jazz cats played on Astral Weeks and those guys were brought back for Moondance but apparently Van conspired to get them off the session

Really?! Didn't know that. It's too bad, because Richard Davis was the most sympathetic, sensitive, and insightful collaborator Van ever had.

Tend to agree. I just read that on Wikipedia. Never heard that about Moondance before either. But the Astral Weeks collaboration was strictly on a higher plane, don't think Van interacted at all with the musicians in the studio.

Caravan by Todd's Utopia anyone?

I like both, but yeah, the results are as they should be. Pitting anyone against Ellington is like trying to extinguish the sun with a garden hose.
