textile in thighville (get bent), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 03:57 (fourteen years ago)

Oh man. There are some good ones here but my gut says "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself".

ENBB, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 03:58 (fourteen years ago)

Or maybe Wishin' and Hopin'? I guess I really love Dusty. If not one of those then one of the Herb As cuase HA rules.

ENBB, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 04:00 (fourteen years ago)

on record as saying "walk on by" might be the pinnacle of popular music, this shit makes me feel HARD emotions

oneohtrix and park (m bison), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 04:01 (fourteen years ago)

You know what was weird? When Ani DiFranco did Wishin' and Hopin' for My Best Friend's Wedding.

ENBB, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 04:01 (fourteen years ago)

haha depressed men, Freudian slip
(ps I am not depressed)

oneohtrix and park (m bison), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 04:02 (fourteen years ago)

when I was 20 I did a cover of "this guys in love w u", I'm scared to go back and listen to it

oneohtrix and park (m bison), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 04:03 (fourteen years ago)

xp i love ani but she's made some odd career choices.

"wishin' and hopin'" makes me cringe; hard to verbalize why. something about reminding me of my mom's high school yearbook photo from 1963.

textile in thighville (get bent), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 04:05 (fourteen years ago)

"Wives and Lovers" because it's so hilariously sexist and dated.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 04:07 (fourteen years ago)

"Me Japanese Boy I Love You"

buzza, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 04:09 (fourteen years ago)

If this had Manfred Mann's "My Little Red Book" I'd vote for it.

I think "Anyone Who Had a Heart" here.

I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself.

Frozen_Warnings, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 04:41 (fourteen years ago)

Aretha's "I Say a Little Prayer" is on my short list for greatest single ever, so that, but that's kind of misleading, in that her style is so against the grain of what Bacharach's greatest songs usually sound like. I could vote for any one of these--they're all brilliant:

Carpenters - "(They Long to Be) Close to You"
Dionne Warwick – "Do You Know the Way to San Jose"
Jackie DeShannon – "What the World Needs Now Is Love"
Herb Alpert – "This Guy's in Love with You"
B.J. Thomas – "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head"
5th Dimension – "One Less Bell to Answer"
Dionne Warwick – "I'll Never Fall in Love Again"

There's also "Wives and Lovers," "What's New Pussycat?" and another half-dozen really excellent singles.

clemenza, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 12:46 (fourteen years ago)

No right answers here, depends on your mood. I voted Stylistics!! Props to anyone who votes B. J. Thomas, though.

โตเกียวเหมียวเหมียว aka Don Nots (Mount Cleaners) (Mount Cleaners), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 12:49 (fourteen years ago)

Here's a vote for Ronnie Milsap's "Any Day Now." The guy was huge for a while, then forgotten.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 12:53 (fourteen years ago)

Jerry Orbach – Promises, Promises

Haven't heard this!

Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 12:56 (fourteen years ago)

That caught my attention too--I hope he sings it in his Prince of the City/Crimes and Misdemeanors persona.

clemenza, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 13:00 (fourteen years ago)

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass – Casino Royale

Went this, probably only me.

Mark G, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 13:27 (fourteen years ago)

a lot of classics but I have to go with the Stylistics

gospodin simmel, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 14:21 (fourteen years ago)

demolition with discretion (m coleman), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 15:10 (fourteen years ago)

how does one not use the Dusty version of "The Look Of Love" in such a comp?

Orbach was the lead of the Broadway cast of "Promises, Promises" (which is a redo of The Apartment). He also duets on "I'll Never Fall in Love Again."

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 15:17 (fourteen years ago)

And where is "My Little Red Book"?

Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

and why not Sandie's "Always there to remind me" ?

Mark G, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

naked eyes had the bigger hit in the states

demolition with discretion (m coleman), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 15:34 (fourteen years ago)

vote for naked eyes "always something there to remind me" = ban imo

demolition with discretion (m coleman), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

and Naked Eyes' "Promises, Promises" is their own song, no?

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

I think the one I could handle best at karaoke is "Wives and Lovers"

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

would pay to see a morbs "wives and lovers"

textile in thighville (get bent), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 18:34 (fourteen years ago)
