Graham (graham), Sunday, 15 September 2002 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Can someone describe the Appleton single to me please, dancing/architecture stylee?

Charlie (Charlie), Sunday, 15 September 2002 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

You can write a pop-eye if you want Graham.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 15 September 2002 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I've got 3,500 words total of essays to get done by post-time Tuesday, but if after that and not having heard all of this week's new entries (I guess I can download some) is alright, than OK.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 15 September 2002 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah as long as it's sometime this week that'd be great. Hearing all the new entries has never been a prerequisite of Pop-Eye duties!

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 15 September 2002 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

She is called Sarah Whatmore!!! HAHAHA

vic (vicc13), Sunday, 15 September 2002 23:17 (twenty-three years ago)

"Maybe I'm Right" is the best song on the new Atomic Kitten album - leagues better than "The Tide Is High".

Dr. C, please write more about 'em! You like Jenny, I luv Lil.

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 15 September 2002 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Where did Dr.C first write about them?

Ha, now that I've finally heard it: Graham is absolutely right about "The Tide Is High (Get The Feeling)". Excellent record. I prefer it to Blondie version because it throws out their whole arrangement, which I now realise was the part that has irritated me all these years, and just keeps the melody, which is fab.

The Appleton record is pretty strange. It followed the ever-excellent White Stripes on TOTP and, for the first few bars, it could have been the latter's twin. But then Appleton mutates into something completely different; there are about 4 potential songs there actually, but it doesn't really settle on any one of them.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Monday, 16 September 2002 07:55 (twenty-three years ago)

The reason I am right = Prog!!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 16 September 2002 07:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Appleton - Fantasy = dirgey rock pretentions from rubbish ones in all saints.

The new Puddle of Mudd song is great!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 16 September 2002 08:04 (twenty-three years ago)

how come liberty x were number 1 on cduk but come sunday ver kitten had held on to a frankly greedy third week? that's not fair.

and the appleton tune is comfortably the worst song of the year. that cod drum and bass bit being the apotheosis of all music.

michael w., Monday, 16 September 2002 08:06 (twenty-three years ago)

er, that should read "the apotheosis of all bad music".

michael w., Monday, 16 September 2002 08:10 (twenty-three years ago)

The Appleton recd is great! The White Stripes (sorry Jeff) on TOTP was dreadful. Oh Lord they're awful, aren't they?

Why has Miss Dy-nam-i-tee disappeared from view?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 16 September 2002 08:14 (twenty-three years ago)

jel i agree however (appleton + fantasy) = apotheosis of all music!!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 16 September 2002 08:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Dr. C - no

More grebt TOTP moments: the expression on Tom Jones face as he watched Wyclef, hoping desperately for a cue. The "OLD!" caption for Status Quo, poor chaps (their voices are seriously fucked now tho')

Jeff W (Jeff W), Monday, 16 September 2002 08:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom Jones entire attempt to get down wit the 'clef was knuckle-bitingly awful.

Alan (Alan), Monday, 16 September 2002 08:38 (twenty-three years ago)

The White Stripes are OK when theyre doing a fast one but they're pulling a fast one when they're doing a slow one. i.e. you really notice the no-bassist thing.

Best thing on TOTP - Jurgen Vries.

The Appleton record is OK.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 16 September 2002 08:43 (twenty-three years ago)

jurgen vries sounds like something of record breakers and is the funniest record this side of scooter.

michael w., Monday, 16 September 2002 08:48 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah Wyclef and Jones was funny!

Wyclef is the king of collabs, though why he has a song with "new-diva" Sarah Connor is beyond me. Whatever happened to TQ?

I don't think much of the liberty x song.

the best song in the top ten is clearly Kelly Osborne!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 16 September 2002 08:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Jurgen Vires - was I the only one who saw his peculiar resemblance to Jazz Club feller off The Fast Show? He even had the bald spot at the back...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 September 2002 09:30 (twenty-three years ago)

My condolences go out to the British public for having to put up with Milk Inc.

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Monday, 16 September 2002 10:33 (twenty-three years ago)

The Appleton thing makes me think how pretty they were back in the day, which might be the point of it.

However it's only rescued by the wicked "I can be anything....etc" bridge part, magnifique.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 16 September 2002 10:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Appleton just reminded me of Eurovision. It really seems designed exactly along those lines... have to hear it again before I could say exactly why, but the build up leading into the chorus... very familiar.

Best bit of the programme was Status Quo attempting to forget they attempted to sue Radio 1 a few years ago...

And, no matter what else you think about The White Stripes, they did provide the only possible clip that could be recycled by TOTP2 in a few years time. "Hey! Check his crazy hair!"

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 September 2002 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

he looks like Robert Smith!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 16 September 2002 11:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Jurgen Vries was way more visually exciting than the White Stripes! (though they did their best - I luv the Stripes' color-coded image though the initial impact is faded a bit now)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 16 September 2002 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah the stripes should try purple now.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 16 September 2002 12:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Jurgen Vries did not double this up with sounding like a crazed supervillain, though, did he?

Plus which, assuming that telly in ten years or so becomes more permissive, the presenter of TOTP2 will be allowed to comment "Phwoar! See the rack on that one? Wouldn't mind showing her my WHITE STRIPE, eh? Eh?"

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 September 2002 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Jurgen Vries went one better and was using mental Martian War-of-the-World noises! Go Jurgen! Also "Crazed supervillain" != "knowing blues singer".

Tom (Groke), Monday, 16 September 2002 12:31 (twenty-three years ago)

But Jurgen only lasted one and a half minutes. Where would they fit the witty captioning in, hmm?

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 September 2002 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes exactly - the mighty Jurgen was SWIZZLED so Top Of The So-Called Pops could fit in yet MORE Stripes/Quo/half-second clips of historical no-marks/Theakston in.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 16 September 2002 12:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, the TOTP-through-the-ages-montage... much as I love the song, I cannot quite see how McAlmont and Butler doing 'Falling' is one of the programme's all-time highlights.

Also - following the producer's recent criticism of the programme, did there not seem to be a peculiarly large amount of recent guitar-type persons in there?

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 September 2002 12:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Even the Quo are recent by geological time.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 16 September 2002 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Where were Bis, eh?

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 September 2002 12:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw Scooter on Popworld!

"is it a bird?
is it a plane?
no it's dave!
on a train!"

They are the League of Gentlemen house band AICM5UKP ect ect

Sarah (starry), Monday, 16 September 2002 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Scooter are great. I like the squeaky voice bits.
