Ronan explains himself.

Yes!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Sunday, 15 September 2002 23:17 (twenty-three years ago)

you're getting better pills than i am!

michael w., Monday, 16 September 2002 08:53 (twenty-three years ago)

or doing a worse job?

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 16 September 2002 12:41 (twenty-three years ago)

So can I write a book? (what a lame and obvious bump this is, but anyway!)

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 16 September 2002 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked this piece very much. However, unlike any other FT/ILM writer, including the other young'uns, Ronan succeeds to a disconcerting degree in making me feel old / out of touch.

Jeff W, Monday, 16 September 2002 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Comments as they happen:

Ronan = Neil Young. Compare: "And even while I knew this was all melodramatic, it didn’t change the fact that I had and still have a burning hatred for that fucking Service Station," with "Though my problems are meaningless, that don't make them go away..." (On The Beach, NY).

David H(owie) (David H(owie)), Monday, 16 September 2002 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know how old Jeff is but for me, at 43, my reaction was more "Yes! Exactly!" Particularly since Ronan chooses one of the moments I cited in the chills-down-the-spine thread recently, when that pulsing, throbbing chord comes in after minutes of straight pounding rhythms in Born Slippy (I love it particularly on some live bootlegs I have). I haven't had a shit job I've hated like that in years, but I haven't forgotten that feeling - and I still get EXACTLY that feeling of release and happiness and exultation from the right moment and the right music after a bad day or week (though not generally much connected with the job, as I say).

As for a book, if you can continue to capture your feelings about your life and your music as well as this, I think you're onto a winner.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 16 September 2002 20:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Just so I'm clear - this was about 'Everything, Everything'? Cos I've had that rotting on my carpet for a little while now, without listening to it... might give it a go now. Liked the article anywhey.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 September 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

this article is the soundtrack to the next four months of my life.
(also : write a book!)

Ess Kay (esskay), Monday, 16 September 2002 22:48 (twenty-three years ago)

i particularly relate to the inability to enjoy the moment without that nagging feeling that it won't last. that moment on the dancefloor when it all falls into place is one of the most special you'll ever experience. but then it goes. bittersweet.

michael w., Tuesday, 17 September 2002 07:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Martin - I think your post encapsulates why Ronan makes me feel old! ;) As you say, there is this sense of recognition, but at the same time you realise it was many years since you had the exact same emotion to the exact same song. It's weird reading Ronan's excited first reactions to "Cowgirl" and Felix's "Don't You Want Me" today. More so than reading the next generation of indie kids views on Slowdive, perhaps because I'm more used to reading the latter.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 08:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep it was about Everything Everything and actually seeing them live at Creamfields. I might not have been able to remember the latter well enough without the former.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 09:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan, at weekend: It's been a really great year musically, I've seen so many live acts that I've never seen before: Prodigy, Underworld, Orbital, Chemical Brothers.

Me: (crumbles into dust)

Great article, man.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 09:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Good stuff Ronan! I sort of agree with fellow grey panthXORS Jeff and Martin. Hearing or playing or dancing to great music really can blot out the stuff you don't want to do, but have to.

If it hadn't been for music, I'd have probably *achieved* far more in the conventional sense (educationally, career), but I'd be far less happy. I've met some great people through music and had the best of times.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 09:42 (twenty-three years ago)

hehe I feel if it wasn't for music I'd be achieving nothing...

Bah. Darren Emerson cancelled in Limerick last night. John Power and Johnny Moy played instead. Johnny Moy was good in fairness but it was still a pisser.

Michael Bourke, Saturday, 21 September 2002 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Weird, why? you don't fancy speeding up to Dublin for tonight's show?

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 21 September 2002 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Well the sign on the door said he cancelled over "recording demands" but some people were muttering that it was some dodgy promoter...

Michael Bourke, Saturday, 21 September 2002 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

That's shit, haha I'll grill him about it this evening. (not really)

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 21 September 2002 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

DO!!

Michael Bourke, Saturday, 21 September 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll ask my friend, he'll know.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 21 September 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)
