I'm thinking of Chemical Bros, UNKLE and Death in Vegas. Given I don't own any of the albums I'm not that qualified to comment but I wish they would choose more interesting collaborators.

DOWNLOAD "LAZY" NOWW!!

Yep, the Chems are getting fucking boring with their choices indeed...Beth Orton and Noel flippin' Gallagher again then? Whoopeedoo. It's like they're acting out all their lame indie fantasies with a breakbeat backing. That said, Out Of Control with Barney S was magnificent, so sometimes it works in spite of itself.

And please don't download Lazy, it's horrible. Not heard the new DiV album yet but the last one is still fantastic and hasn't dated at all (Jim Reid, Bobby Gillespie, Dot Allison, Iggy Pop all guest). The UNKLE thing was such an embarrassment to DJ Shadow that he's still apologising for it in interviews now.

Dunno if this counts, since he's on nearly the whole album, but The Aloof's Ricky Barrow sings all over Luke Slater's electrotechnopop album Alright On Top, thus making it my album of 2002 thus far...beauteous.

dntel - a life full of possibilities has a ton of guest stars, ranging from herbert, mai todd, and that ben gibbard guy.

Classic: 808 State's "ooops" & "qmart", featuring Bjork.
Dud: 808 State's "one in ten", featuring UB40.

Were 808 State the first to gather up non-"dance" vocalists to appear on their records?

As for the Chem. Bros.: I like "Setting Sun" in spite of Noel's appearance, but "Let Forever Be" was a comedy piece featuring the worst lyrics ever. Am I to understand that he also appears on "Come With Us" (which I haven't heard)? Now that's just excessive.

If Shadow's so embarassed by UNKLE how come he's still playing bits of it live? Bits of Richard Ashcroft singing in fact.

It gets irritating, but Chems and co aren't as annoying as Oakenfold or Timo Maas doing it. I even like Timo Maas a little bit but that song with Kelis is just an excuse for some lame production. I don't like the idea of the new Death in Vegas album having all these collaborators, I didn't think the last one was so hot either, good for a while but I can safely say I'll never listen to it again, unlike Dead Elvis which I still quite like.

808 State were pretty much the first to get recognised 'rock' or 'indie' vocalists to sing on electronic/dance tracks i'd say yeh

the UNKLE album is not an embarassment - it is bloody good...i still dont understand people's problems with it

Ja Rule makes me wanna spew...fuckin overkill - a collaborations embargo would be good

like the Kelis/Maas thing - tho its not quite as good as Freq Nasty/Phoebe One's 'Boomin Back Atcha'

Noel Gallagher is not on 'Come With Us' - i think Charlie meant Richard Ashcroft

and here's something to think about: the list of collaborators on the Oakenfold album is might impressive (Perry Farrell, Hunter S Thompson, Ice Cube etc.) but what i've heard of it aint really much cop and doesnt seem any better than the recent and somewhat uninspired Chems tracks with their fave vocalists (Orton, Ashcroft etc.)

Charlie did indeed mean Richard Ashcroft. Urgh. He doesn't half sound like Holly Johnson on that track tho!

Freq Nasty's Boomin' Back Atcha is way cooler sans Phoebe One - she gets in the way of the funk...

...yeah, and shitty shellshock. these collaborations are nearly always a bad idea. rockist as fuck. in fact i'm really struggling to come up with a decent one. er, wait, i think i've come up with a precursor to 808 state: mark e. smith on "i'm in deep" from coldcut's first album "what's that noise". do i win a prize?

oh i think there's plenty of good examples as we've already illustrated with the earlier Chemical Brothers tracks (Life Is Sweet, ALive:Alone, Where Do I Begin, Setting Sun), 808 State (Spanish Heart, Moses, Ooops, Azura) and UNKLE (i'll stand by it forever)

good call on COldcut. what about that track Mark E did with D.O.S.E. - 'Plug Myself In' - big beat excellence that was

check out Cylob ft Mike Flowers as well - cant rememeber the title but THATS how to do it
