I guess because it's either terribly obscure or terrible underrated; or maybe you are overrating it!!!

Bogdan Raczynski - My Love I Love

A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Monday, 16 September 2002 00:52 (twenty-three years ago)

There aren't any, because every true all-time classic album is in my top 200, which contains an alarming proportion of Flying Nun's catalogue from 1987-1994.

B:Rad (Brad), Monday, 16 September 2002 00:53 (twenty-three years ago)

if it is only 1987 then you are missing the verlaines 'hallelujah all the way home'. i have been listening to the skeptics a lot recently, their box set should be on somebody's classic list.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 16 September 2002 01:01 (twenty-three years ago)

(short descriptions of more obscurantist albums would be appreciated)

Aaron A., Monday, 16 September 2002 01:04 (twenty-three years ago)

My Love I Love = just like being in love only more creepy and less sexy, samurai math emo, accordions, idm twice removed, wet dreams, style over substance/funny noises over songs, "i will always be your frog", etc.

A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Monday, 16 September 2002 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

(excellent, thanks)

Aaron A., Monday, 16 September 2002 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I have this unfortunate tendency to fall madly in love with the first album I hear by a certain band, and every record after that doesn't make me as excited, even when literally EVERYONE else tells me it's bettah. Thus:

"13", Blur- A sad bastard record, which fit 'cos I was a sad bastard at the time. Dig that groove on "Trailerpark"! Dig the screeching of "BLURREMI"! Dig the bleakness of "No Distance Left To Run"! Dig the...uhm, no, I really can't find anything good to say about "Tender". I cheered when Britney's "One More Time" kept that piece of dreck from getting to #1, and I'm by no means a fan of Ms.Spears.

"I Let Love In", Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds- Delightfully noisy, "Laying Low" is easily one of my top5 suicide songs.

"Sadinista!", The Clash- "Its imperfection is what makes it perfect!", is my usual argument, and a pretty lousy one at that. But c'mon, how can you not love the whole scope of this record? Hip Hop, Dub, Caribbean, Gospel...

"Hard Nose The Highway", Van Morrison- Features "Snow In San Anselmo", Van The Ma...err, sorry, "use diferent words", I know...Van The Pig's finest performance (Them years excluded)

I also love:

"Magic & Loss", Lou Reed- 'Cos it's the perfect start of school year record.

"John Barleycorn Must Die", Traffic (used to be in those lists back in the 70's I think, but isn't anymore)

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 16 September 2002 02:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Daniel_Rf,
Could never really get over the debt of '13' to 'Ladies and Gentlemen We're Floating in Space' tho - why not just listen to the original?

Michael Dieter, Monday, 16 September 2002 03:10 (twenty-three years ago)

lfo - frequencies

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 16 September 2002 03:43 (twenty-three years ago)

OTM, Jess, OTM - can't believe I missed it! And may I take this opportunity to add The Wiseguys - Executive Suite, The Orb - Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld and Black Dog - Bytes? Ta!

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 16 September 2002 03:47 (twenty-three years ago)

thnx charlie...i still think frequencies is the best "dance" album, evah...

taking "anybody's top 200" to mean the normal media outlets:

fingers inc. - "washing machine" 12"
v/a - wanna buy a bridge?
foetus - hole
jawbox - for your own special sweetheart
the dead c - harsh 70s reality
arthur russell - world of echo
x-102 discovers the rings of saturn
4hero - parallel universe
black sheep - a wolf in sheep's clothing
eyehategod - dopesick
melt banana - scratch or stitch
nagisa ni te - me, on the beach
lynnfield pioneers - emerge

This Heat - Deceit

T. Weiss (Timmy), Monday, 16 September 2002 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

also:

nurse with wound - soliloquy for lilith
ar kane - 69
earth wind & fire - open our eyes
the sea & cake - the fawn

alec empire - the destroyer

and yes, deciet without a fucking doubt.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 16 September 2002 04:09 (twenty-three years ago)

the fawn only goes on mine when I don't put the biz instead. but I'm not a normal media outlet.

Josh (Josh), Monday, 16 September 2002 04:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Radio Birdman, "Radios Appear": Like the Doors ca '70/'71, only (a) with a healthy dose of proto-punk and surf-rock and (b) with better lyrics and a bassist and a lead singer who isn't portly and drunk and on the verge of death.
The BellRays, "Let It Blast": Every single review calls them "Tina Turner meets the MC5", which is annoying and tired but I can see how everyone wants to emphasize that fact since it's a pretty damned cool concept (and also damned cool execution).
Beck, "Stereopathetic Soulmanure": "Odelay" is fun but not the exhilirating "holy SHIT what the hell is THIS CRAZINESS" fun that this record is. Noise-rock experiments worthy of Captain Beefheart rub elbows with country ballads good enough for Johnny Cash to cover.
UK Subs, "Another Kind of Blues": I LIVE IN A CAH!
Eddie Hazel, "Games, Dames & Guitar Thangs": BETTER THAN HENDRIX. REISSUE THIS NOW, WARNERS. NOW.
Suicide Commandos, "Make A Record": I'm fairly sure this was the album (or at least the band) that started the whole Minneapolis Punk Boom that gave us the Replacements and Husker Du and Soul Asylum in the '80s. They wrote songs about crucifying mosquitoes. What's not to like?
Sly and the Family Stone, "Fresh": Probably their third-best album and their last great one. Their cover of "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)" is MIND-BOGGLING.

Nate Patrin, Monday, 16 September 2002 04:16 (twenty-three years ago)

i would have chosen the biz, but the fawn was the one i heard first, so it edges in. also, it's got that motorik thing going on.

but jesus, speaking of which, the sam prekop solo album towers above either of them.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 16 September 2002 04:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Sly's "Que Sera Sera", a mighty tune...as heard on the closing credits of Heathers, a mighty film...although perhaps not as mighty as the tune...new thread, perhaps? Films with soundtracks better than the actual movie?

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 16 September 2002 04:41 (twenty-three years ago)

"alec empire - the destroyer"

The best thing to come out of the whole atr, digital hardcore thang.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 16 September 2002 04:45 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, agreed. probably because it's just "real" hardstep/techstep jungle with the distortion cranked to 11 and the beats just a hair more frenzied.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 16 September 2002 04:48 (twenty-three years ago)

universal order of armageddon "the switch is down"... post-hardcore with arms removed.

men's recovery project "boldies over basra"... electro weirdo.

thinking fellers union local 282 "Strangers from the Universe"... just cause... tful 282 would probably be ignored by a greatest 200.

the ex "dignity of labour".... awesome.

this heat "deceit"... this would be in my top 50 easily.

family fodder "Savoir Faire: The Best of Family Fodder"... a collection, but who cares... awesome new wave... hilarious, irreverant, and catchy as hell.

the calculators "Simplicity and Style" ep... total 80's new wave revival from 98 or so... i'm sure there's a source that may be better to include... but i love this 10" and have scarcely seen it mentioned anywhere else in the last few years. the lou reed cover "vicious" is awesome.

and on AND ON...
m.

msp, Monday, 16 September 2002 05:59 (twenty-three years ago)

but I'm not aware of every top 200....?

just casue I've been listening to it a lot lately : Luomo - Vocalcity
Vladislav Delay in a more house - melodic / less atmospheric guise. Oh, and with vocals.

The Richard D. James album - Aphex Twin
Plux Quba - Nuno Canavarro
In Pittsburgh - Loren Mazzacane Connors
Arise Therefore - Palace
New Morning - Bob Dylan
Camofleur - Gastr Del Sol
Ralf and Florian
Advent - Richard Youngs
Unhalfbricking - Fairport Convention

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 16 September 2002 08:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Some superb answers so far - "Ralf and Florian", "Deceit", "76.14" (or whatever) and "Feral Pop Frenzy". Can't fault those choices. Here's a few of mine.

"Skywriting" - Field Mice or maybe "Her handwriting" - Trembling Blue Stars (Bob Wratton at his best on both occasions)

"Euphoria" - Insides (psychotic dreampop at its finest)

"United States Of America" - United State of America (very forward looking - I bet Broadcast wore out a few copies of this)

"The only fun in town" - Josef K (treble as a weapon?)

That'll do for now

Rob M, Monday, 16 September 2002 09:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Sun Ra: Out There a Minute Strictly speaking it's a compilation, but it works well as an album. Sun Ra selected the material included, and despite the Evidence reissue series, a significant portion of it is not available elsewhere on CD, including the great "Somwhere in Space" and "Dark Clouds with Silver Linings." Even the truncated version of "Next Stop Mars" included here fades out at an opportune moment and feels complete. One of my favorite albums ever.

DeRayMi, Monday, 16 September 2002 10:17 (twenty-three years ago)

"Love Is Dead" Mr T Experience. I've just realised this album is actually the pinnacle of human endeavour.

ACID BATH by Alien Sex Fiend, NIGHTTIME by Killing Joke, FANTASTIC SPIKES THROUGH BALLOON by Skeleton Key, DUTY NOW FOR THE FUTURE by Devo

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 September 2002 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

A few off the top of my head:

Astor Piazzolla - Tango: Zero Hour
Unfairly maligned as yuppie shag music, this is, in fact, the most potent distillation of Piazzolla's passion and precision. And it's excellent for shagging.

Come - 11:11
Must slept-on heroin-soaked indie-blues opera--it always sounds like it's getting ready to completely fall apart, or worse yet, keep going. Despite well-meaining protestations to the contrary, the band never came within miles of it again.

Oval - Systemisch
Glitch symphonies for a new age already passing.

Junior Kimbrough and the Soul Blues Boys - Sad Days, Lonely Nights
The blues' last gasp, drawn into a sinuous, trashed up drone/groove that sounds like it's going to last all night. No idiotic bar-band/lover man posing--just amazing music. And the Best Blues Album Title Evah.

Nuyorican Soul - Nuyorican Soul
Paradise reimagined as 1970's black and Latin New York.

Lee G (Lee G), Monday, 16 September 2002 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Thirst, Saqqara Dogs. If the "Zen and the Art of Record Reviewing" type reviews that this one got were any indication, quite a few people (me, for instance) had their minds rearranged by this one when it came out in the mid-eighties. So why don't I ever see it on any Top 200 lists?

2:Title In Limbo, Residents/Renaldo and The Loaf.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Monday, 16 September 2002 13:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Art Bears - The World As It is Today

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 16 September 2002 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

The immediate one that jumps out at me:

Flaming Groovies -- Shake Some Action
It fits the rock canon beautifully, was released in the right age for recognition (mid '70s) and features gorgeous British Invasion melodies. I've always been surprised that I've never seen it on one of those lists...

Yancey (ystrickler), Monday, 16 September 2002 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

You're right, that's a total classic.

hstencil, Monday, 16 September 2002 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

genius list, ddb... all fairly mainstream, but somehow overlooked. only one i'd take exception to is Drop Nineteens, even though I pawned it 8 yrs ago, but I don't remember anything on it topping the Madonna cover.

Bossanova is indeed the Pixies best work, and Spine of God needs to be heard by more people!

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Here are a few albums I really like that don't seem to get much (any) props.

Phylr "Contra La Puerta" -- cool mixture of soundtrack music noir and interesting drum programming (kinda pseudo dnb minus the bass) by James F. Coleman of Cop Shoot Cop. His second album isn't very good, but this one was my favorites for a couple years and is probably the only think I ever bought/liked off of Invisible Records.

Paul Schutze "New Maps of Hell", "The Rapture of Metals" or "Site Anubis" -- pick one, they are all good. These three records are sample edit pieces built of improvs of a band led by Schutze and Bill Laswell. All three have an interesting brew of "He Loved Him Madly" fusion, odd other world percussion, and dark isolationist ambient sounds. (If I had to pick one, I would probably go with Site Anubis, mostly for "The Big God Blows In", but all three are excellent.) "The Surgery of Touch" is another good one, while being a solo ambient album.

The Grifters "Eureka" -- it seems some people get mushy over Pavement, but man none of their music really meant as much to me these guys from Memphis. I don't know if it was the time or not, but this EP is a long time favorite of mine. "Crappin You Negative" is a better choice if you are in more of a rocking mood, it is just as good.

I gotta go with "Maggot Brain" myself. That record was always a favorite for coming down, after the sun is already up.

Flying Saucer Attack "Further". -- This is the album to use before the sun comes up and "Maggot Brain". This album is weirdly intense and relaxing at the same time. I have no idea what the vocals are about except something to do with time and they sound cool.

Crescent "Electronic Sound Constructions" & "Sun/Unit System" e.p. --
The rock band track that opens the ep is not bad, lofi Sonic Youth inspired kind of thing, but that is not the reason to check these out. The remainder of this album and e.p. are some bizarro, cool and unique sounding tape loop, spoken word, dub echo pieces. "Unit Structure" and "There Is No Matter" are awesome very moody and trippy pieces of music. I found both on vinyl for near nada and are worth checking out. (I've still never heard Crescent's other music, but one day I will.)

Well, I went ahead and gave props to two so I might as well make it three from that area.

Third Eye Foundation "Ghost", "You Guys Kill Me", & "Lost Little Soul" -- Matt Elliot is a master of the sampler. These are three of my favorites of the last few years.

Roky Erickson "All that May Do My Rhyme" -- this is by far the best sounding of his albums and was put together with some love, which you definitely cannot say for the majority of his records which are pretty slipshot. This one and the first 13th Floor Elevators are the ones to get.

James Brown "Hell" -- this is a good album front to back and has some vicious grooves.

Neil Young "On the Beach" -- Neil's best and darkest album and it has been out of print for 20+ years, go figure.

The Contortions "Buy" -- slam dancing under the disco ball with the slide guitar as percussion instrument.

Bundy K. Brown's remixes for Tortoise & Aerial M "Find the One", "East of the Ryan" & "Attention Defecit Disorder..." -- cool Steve Reich influenced minimalism that is better than quite a bit of both bands repertoire. I wish he would have made an original or complete remix album in this style, it is some cool music.

These are off the top of my head, there are more I suppose.

o. nate - there's more than one Kletka Red album? Where the heck can I find it?

Grifters, Paul Schutze, Dog Faced Hermans, Jawbox, Dead C, Camper Van Beethoven, Kletka Red, Sun Ra, Palace, Roky Erickson, The Minutemen, Loren Mazzacane, Charles Gayle, TFUL282 ... the titles in this thread are closer to my top 200 than any list I've seen.

Three additions:
Voice of Eye, Mariner Sonique
Magic Hour, No Excess Is Absurd
Aesop Rock, Labor Days

and a Biota title needs to be in here someplace.

The one I mentioned, "Hijacking", I think you can order directly from the Tzadik website. AMG lists a second album by them called "Hybrid", but I've not heard it and don't know where to find it.

Actually, it appears to be available on Forced Exposure. I may be compelled to place an order...

HYBRID is the one I have. Insound.com also carries it.

Time to look into this Tzadik release.

(I like how this thread is implicitly asking, "What is you 201st-favorite album?")

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Hybrid was on my friend Rob Anderson's Explain label, which is currently defunct, but I believe it is still in-print and available.

"Jacobites" by Jacobites (Nikki Sudden and Dave Kusworth + friends) is an all-time classic de premier ordre. Is Johnny Thunders' "So Alone" on anyone's list? Probably. Elliott Murphy has made so many great records I dont even know which one wouldnt make the top 200. These are all openly rockist suggestions.
