Deathspell Omega - C/D

No thread on these esoteric harbingers of hell. Pretty good piece on them on popmatters today, so I thought let's go

I only have Fas-Ite myself, and used to find it very intriguing, but hard to get into. Will try again.

I like these guys a lot, and find their transcendental gnostic satanism thing interesting. But I really can't listen to them more than once in a while - they're sort of like a metal Fushitsusha or something, a visceral experience that's devoid of musical landmarks that will really stick in my head.

when i was metalling i found a couple of these cheap & urgh they sound like radiohead meets danny elfman but with that whole grown-men-go-games-workshop angle.

I was listening to Diabolus Absconditus just this morning. Friend got me on to them. Did me a copy of Fas Ite, which I then mislaid on a very very drunken afternoon. Had to go back the following day asking around for the bag I'd lost. "What was in it?' 'Ah, a copy of Tom McCarthy's C, a Deathspell Omega cd and a box of greengages.'

Don't really recognise iglu ferrignu's description tbh. Friend who got me into them is a big fan of complicated/sparse/epic metal, and yeah, while i guess you have to be in the mood I like the switchbacks, bursts of engine and sudden moments of threatening calm.

i dunno, 'paraclete' used to sound a lot more chaotic to me but now it seems pretty straightforward. kind of swingy. haven't listened to the earlier ones yet.

_Si monumentum requires, circumspice_ is a total classic. Don't like all their records, but the ones I do like I *really* like.

yeh it was a trolly description, but y'know they do sound a lot more andrew lloyd webber than i was expecting. by which i mean conveying epic drama using all the signifiers we have come to expect. and the guitar playing is kinda cliche ridden. and the synth washes / ambient segues just way too cheesy. i just don't get how they got this rep of being extreme / experimental / whatever. that in itself wouldn't make for good music, but neither does having no tunes & shit production.

if they ever did interviews, it would be nice to hear them say something about the gradual cleaning-up of their sound. the new ep sounds very focused and articulate.

listening to these guys a lot the past couple of days...something about what j. says there, about the cleaning up of the sound -- it's really interesting. you can really follow what's going on compositionally, for lack of a better word - you can hear how they're death metal fans imo, there's a lot of tech sympathy on Kenose...band remains interesting even if the cleaning-up often leaves me wanting more of a punch in the gut. haven't really revisited their records in so long -- they stand up, imo, they're a good engaging listen.

The Repellent Scars Of Abandon And Election is one of my favourite metal songs by anyone ever. Paracletus didn't hit me so hard as Fas - the music was of equal intensity but a diminished scope, and I feel that an epic register suits this band. Always fun when they come up on shuffle though

had kinda lost track of them after paracletus. got kenose on now and i'm digging it, the longer compositions really suit them.

I still think Iglu Ferrignu was talking about Bal-Sagoth.

I liked Fas Ite and Kenose but Synarchy Of Molten Bones is not working for me even after many spins. Is this unusually complex even for their standards?

I don't get Synarchy either. Still love the new one though.

Paracletus is the only one I return to.
