The Laziest River

jed_, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

yep

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

savage night

iatee, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

The title track gets stuck in my head at least twice a week.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 18:53 (thirteen years ago)

each song is the best song

BJ O (Lamp), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

Laziest River will probably take it because people who don't like Bejar's voice are the vocal majority, but it shouldn't have been included in this poll as it's vinyl only (or rather, not on the CD). Also, isn't it written by Tim Hecker or something?

Iago Galdston, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

I have still not heard "Laziest River" and I usually skip "Bay of Pigs (Detail)", but any of the others could be in contention.

o. nate, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

tim hecker collab was something else thats not on this record

still havent heard the laziest river since its not on the cd

voted title track

ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 19:05 (thirteen years ago)

voted blue eyes because i like singing the "i won't and i never will ... bluuuuuue eeeeeeyes"

is "sounds, smash hits, melody maker, NME, all sounds like a dream to me" the title track?

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 19:05 (thirteen years ago)

yeah

iatee, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

Also, isn't it written by Tim Hecker or something?

Ted Bois, the keyboardist in Bejar's band.

jaymc, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 19:08 (thirteen years ago)

Laziest River will probably take it because people who don't like Bejar's voice are the vocal majority, but it shouldn't have been included in this poll as it's vinyl only

i figure it won't win but should be an option though i'm biased, as i spent many a summer's day reclining thoughtfully as 'kaputt' spun on the turntable.

omar little, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 19:10 (thirteen years ago)

"downtown"

feel like that one sneaks up on you. the bassline

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 19:27 (thirteen years ago)

savage night at the opera

dmr, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

I'm voting for "Suicide Demo for Kara Walker" on the basis of it being the only song I remember from when I listened to this.

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 19:55 (thirteen years ago)

Laziest River is on the uk cd, before Bay of Pigs.

seriously omar is just killing it

dave coolier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 19:59 (thirteen years ago)

then why isnt it dead yet?

BJ O (Lamp), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 20:01 (thirteen years ago)

you can't kill perfection

dave coolier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 20:02 (thirteen years ago)

but it shouldn't have been included in this poll as it's vinyl only

What, are all vinyl pressings counterfeit bootlegs or some shit? IT'S JUST AS OFFICIAL AS ANY OTHER TRACK ON THE ALBUM.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 20:05 (thirteen years ago)

bay of pigs

radiant silverfish (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

does everyone agree that a vinyl only track not included on the (US) cd belongs in this poll? my main problem is listening to people bitch about bejar's vocals and blanket praise laziest river, which is nice and all but i find it telling that it was left off the US cd. By the way, why was it left off the US cd?

Iago Galdston, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 20:59 (thirteen years ago)

Blue Eyes is my favorite. Surprised it doesn't get more love on these threads.

Moodles, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

does everyone agree that a vinyl only track not included on the (US) cd belongs in this poll?

yes. once you hear the album with it included it's a completely different listening experience, and for the better. also note that it's not tacked on like a bonus track but appears prior to the last track. idk why it was left off the CD version, but if you're going to argue the CD is the "official" version of the album well then eh whatever.

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

i feel like the laziest river is a 'for fans only' track.. i think having a 20 minute song then a 10 minute song at the end of a cd of relatively short shorts is a bit hardcore

radiant silverfish (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:13 (thirteen years ago)

short songs* that is

radiant silverfish (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:13 (thirteen years ago)

probably listed to "poor in love" 900 times last year so that.

Clay, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:13 (thirteen years ago)

hell, i wish it was included on the US cd, I'm not actively against it, just find it odd that it's not on there. and i also own and listen primarily to the vinyl version. sorry i brought it up! these destroyer threads have a witchy vibe, sorry i added to the mishigas

P.S. Just saw diamonddave's post but i'll post this anyway--thank you d. dave!

Iago Galdston, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)

Still haven't heard "The Laziest River", because I only have the CD version and, last time I checked, it was "Album Only" on iTunes.

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

i voted for suicide demo--i feel like it's the emotional heart of the record (and i'm a kara walker fan)

Thanks!

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:24 (thirteen years ago)

feel the opposite of diamonddave, I would usually turn off kaputt after "song for america", but once I heard it with "the laziest river" it seemed more like an epic dbl album, and I would end up listening all the way through. not putting it on the US CD (it is on the UK version) seems almost like a failure of nerve on bejar's part.

xp

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:25 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, for some reason I originally thought it was length restraints, but it would all clearly fit on one disc.

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:28 (thirteen years ago)

This is The Laziest River for me, but if that one wasn't included in the poll, I'd go for Chinatown without blinking

Flag post? I hardly knew her! (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)

Since I downloaded "The Laziest River" separate from the album, most of the time I just listen to on its own.

jaymc, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)

doesn't really answer the question but....

What about the structure of the record? I read that it took a very long time to record, comparatively, and “Bay of Pigs” initially appeared on an EP in 2009. There’s also an extra side on the vinyl version, which I haven’t heard.

That extra side [a suite entitled “The Laziest River”] was recorded independently of all the other songs on Kaputt. The piano player in Destroyer [Ted Bois], doesn’t actually play on [the CD version of] Kaputt. He took all the photos, and he did the artwork for the two Destroyer EPs before the album, but he’s not playing because there’s no piano on the record. But yeah, he pretty much composed that 20-minute side in its entirety and recorded it, and it’s really kind of a feat. I mean, I’m really really into it. I sing on it a little bit, in the middle.

And then “Bay of Pigs” was inside of the Kaputt process. It just so happened that once we started working on it, we just didn’t stop for like four months. And as we did it, I kind of thought it would be cool to just finish this really long song and put it out as a little taste of things to come.

voted song for america only because "they are all the best song" wasnt an option

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:47 (thirteen years ago)

gr80, i feel as though i should have included that option and feel compelled to suggest it as a "write-in" candidate. it's all good, though. a phrase which, incidentally, could refer to this album.

omar little, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:48 (thirteen years ago)

is there are bejar lyrics thread cause i feel like he's one of the best working today. although this album's different than the rest lyrically. not better or worse, just different. he mentioned in one interview that he was mostly looking for little phrases that sounded good rather than the epic rambling that he's usually going for.

Moreno, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:53 (thirteen years ago)

*is there a*

Moreno, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:54 (thirteen years ago)

He's said he thought far less about lyrics here than before. He says he's all about the singing now.

I like this!

Voted Savage Night at the Opera. Just cos it's the one in my head most often.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 22:58 (thirteen years ago)

reaaaally couldn't pick - it's so consistent. but the first thing that popped into my mind was Poor In Love.

Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 22:59 (thirteen years ago)

"savage night at the opera" cuz it's the best title

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 23:02 (thirteen years ago)

so many great ones... "savage night" was the first one I loved. at the moment I would say "song for america"... or "suicide demo" !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 23:09 (thirteen years ago)

love "blue eyes" so much

diln (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 23:11 (thirteen years ago)

whys everybody sing along. whys everybody sing along. when we built this city on ruins.

Poor In Love for me.

kid steel (cajunsunday), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 23:49 (thirteen years ago)

"Poor In Love" put me off listening to the album at first. I love it now but its far from the best track and works better in the context of the album rather than a standalone track tbh. i voted for the title track.

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 9 February 2012 00:05 (thirteen years ago)

Actually, "Poor in Love" is the only song I don't love on this. It's ok but I would be fine if it wasn't on the album.

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 9 February 2012 11:14 (thirteen years ago)

Laziest River

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 9 February 2012 11:20 (thirteen years ago)

listened to the album again this morning, feel good about my vote for blue eyes but suicide demo and kaputt would be close second choices

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 9 February 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

The correct answer is "The Laziest River"... Cannot believe it's not on the US CD version!

Clarke B., Thursday, 9 February 2012 16:53 (thirteen years ago)

the LinnDrum on The Laziest River sounds so nice

radiant silverfish (diamonddave85), Thursday, 9 February 2012 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

if the laziest river doesn't win this, i'd be surprised. that is the one song i'd keep from this album if someone pointed a gun to my head. largely superior to the rest which strays in between pleasant easy listening (about half of it), pleasant and quite good (eg suicide demo) and pretty annoying. like the drum programming when it's in the foreground (eg savage night...) which can totally ruin a potentially great song like song for america. i think i am just about to get over the feeble, nasal voice after having listened to it quite a lot in the last days. who is actually playing the sax? without the sax the album would be only half as interesting.

alex in mainhattan, Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:47 (thirteen years ago)

Saxophonist = Joseph Shabason

jaymc, Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:12 (thirteen years ago)

the record is great mainly because of john Collins and David Carswell production.
Destroyer had better songs in other albums imo.

nostormo, Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:18 (thirteen years ago)

atm blue eyes but its all good

judith, Friday, 10 February 2012 09:01 (thirteen years ago)

this should really be a poll of the best moments within these songs

iatee, Saturday, 11 February 2012 21:54 (thirteen years ago)

like I think of this as a concrete whole w/ 150 great little musical and lyrical flourishes more than 10 songs

iatee, Saturday, 11 February 2012 21:56 (thirteen years ago)

150? 450 imo.

omar little, Saturday, 11 February 2012 22:34 (thirteen years ago)

actually I counted, it's 473

iatee, Saturday, 11 February 2012 22:34 (thirteen years ago)

i suppose there are certain moments that have more than one thing going on and should be counted twice...

omar little, Saturday, 11 February 2012 22:39 (thirteen years ago)

didn't know this poll was going on. my most listened to album of the last two years.

hard to pick just one, as someone already said "they are all the best song" going to vote for "Savage Night at the Opera" today.

Bee OK, Saturday, 25 February 2012 06:07 (thirteen years ago)

i have still not heard "The Laziest River" as i'm American and own the CD, so i have listened to album mostly in my car.

Iago Galdston, Tuesday, 6 March 2012 03:24 (thirteen years ago)

very nearly voted "Suicide Demo", but it turns out "Poor in Love" still owns my heart *shrug*

really tho, it could have been anything. except "The Laziest River", because who cares? if I wanted 20 minutes of sequenced bleep-bloops with very little Bejar, I'd go listen to Tangerine Dream

Despite all my cheek, I am still just a freak on a leash (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 6 March 2012 03:43 (thirteen years ago)

(I've also listened to it much less than anything else—I fell in love with the "River"-less CD sequence, and only bothered to check it out after seeing so many ILXors completely lose their shit. didn't know it was 'supposed to' precede "Bay of Pigs" tho—all this time I've been using it as the closing track!)

Despite all my cheek, I am still just a freak on a leash (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 6 March 2012 03:46 (thirteen years ago)

savage

nostormo, Tuesday, 6 March 2012 07:51 (thirteen years ago)

laziest river, no competition whatsoever

it was p infuriating when someone on the EOY tracks poll said that it was ambient music for people who had never listened to ambient music before (or something like that). not sure where that came from but the track reeks of eno/badalamenti/classic new age, maybe a bit pastichey but imo it uses those templates for different compositional ends. and it has a pop song stuck inside of it, which puts it in a different category anyhow

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 6 March 2012 09:09 (thirteen years ago)

Exactly; there's an 8-minute pop song, in line with the rest of Kaputt, in the middle of it.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 6 March 2012 09:10 (thirteen years ago)

1. "Prelude (Estuary)" 4:17
2. "Nagel's Marimba" 4:28
3. "The Laziest River" 7:04
4. "Palm Springs Life" 0:30
5. "Landing on Water" 3:39

Only about 3 minutes of it sounds anythign like Tangerine Dream.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 6 March 2012 11:55 (thirteen years ago)

listening to it makes me feel the same feelings I get when I listen to Tangerine Dream, then. WHICH IS FINE, but not what I look to Destroyer for. this makes y'all the Destroyer equivalent of ppl who 'only like the single' or w/e.

Despite all my cheek, I am still just a freak on a leash (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 6 March 2012 11:59 (thirteen years ago)
