Laziest River will probably take it because people who don't like Bejar's voice are the vocal majority, but it shouldn't have been included in this poll as it's vinyl only (or rather, not on the CD). Also, isn't it written by Tim Hecker or something?

I have still not heard "Laziest River" and I usually skip "Bay of Pigs (Detail)", but any of the others could be in contention.

I'm voting for "Suicide Demo for Kara Walker" on the basis of it being the only song I remember from when I listened to this.

does everyone agree that a vinyl only track not included on the (US) cd belongs in this poll? my main problem is listening to people bitch about bejar's vocals and blanket praise laziest river, which is nice and all but i find it telling that it was left off the US cd. By the way, why was it left off the US cd?

yes. once you hear the album with it included it's a completely different listening experience, and for the better. also note that it's not tacked on like a bonus track but appears prior to the last track. idk why it was left off the CD version, but if you're going to argue the CD is the "official" version of the album well then eh whatever.

i feel like the laziest river is a 'for fans only' track.. i think having a 20 minute song then a 10 minute song at the end of a cd of relatively short shorts is a bit hardcore

Still haven't heard "The Laziest River", because I only have the CD version and, last time I checked, it was "Album Only" on iTunes.

feel the opposite of diamonddave, I would usually turn off kaputt after "song for america", but once I heard it with "the laziest river" it seemed more like an epic dbl album, and I would end up listening all the way through. not putting it on the US CD (it is on the UK version) seems almost like a failure of nerve on bejar's part.

Yeah, for some reason I originally thought it was length restraints, but it would all clearly fit on one disc.

This is The Laziest River for me, but if that one wasn't included in the poll, I'd go for Chinatown without blinking

Since I downloaded "The Laziest River" separate from the album, most of the time I just listen to on its own.

What about the structure of the record? I read that it took a very long time to record, comparatively, and “Bay of Pigs” initially appeared on an EP in 2009. There’s also an extra side on the vinyl version, which I haven’t heard.

That extra side [a suite entitled “The Laziest River”] was recorded independently of all the other songs on Kaputt. The piano player in Destroyer [Ted Bois], doesn’t actually play on [the CD version of] Kaputt. He took all the photos, and he did the artwork for the two Destroyer EPs before the album, but he’s not playing because there’s no piano on the record. But yeah, he pretty much composed that 20-minute side in its entirety and recorded it, and it’s really kind of a feat. I mean, I’m really really into it. I sing on it a little bit, in the middle.

And then “Bay of Pigs” was inside of the Kaputt process. It just so happened that once we started working on it, we just didn’t stop for like four months. And as we did it, I kind of thought it would be cool to just finish this really long song and put it out as a little taste of things to come.

gr80, i feel as though i should have included that option and feel compelled to suggest it as a "write-in" candidate. it's all good, though. a phrase which, incidentally, could refer to this album.

is there are bejar lyrics thread cause i feel like he's one of the best working today. although this album's different than the rest lyrically. not better or worse, just different. he mentioned in one interview that he was mostly looking for little phrases that sounded good rather than the epic rambling that he's usually going for.

Poor In Love for me.

"Poor In Love" put me off listening to the album at first. I love it now but its far from the best track and works better in the context of the album rather than a standalone track tbh. i voted for the title track.

Actually, "Poor in Love" is the only song I don't love on this. It's ok but I would be fine if it wasn't on the album.

if the laziest river doesn't win this, i'd be surprised. that is the one song i'd keep from this album if someone pointed a gun to my head. largely superior to the rest which strays in between pleasant easy listening (about half of it), pleasant and quite good (eg suicide demo) and pretty annoying. like the drum programming when it's in the foreground (eg savage night...) which can totally ruin a potentially great song like song for america. i think i am just about to get over the feeble, nasal voice after having listened to it quite a lot in the last days. who is actually playing the sax? without the sax the album would be only half as interesting.

Destroyer had better songs in other albums imo.

the last yo la tengo album was ridiculous for this, i listened to it on a 500 mile car ride and it felt like it was determined to outlast the journey.

(I've also listened to it much less than anything else—I fell in love with the "River"-less CD sequence, and only bothered to check it out after seeing so many ILXors completely lose their shit. didn't know it was 'supposed to' precede "Bay of Pigs" tho—all this time I've been using it as the closing track!)

it was p infuriating when someone on the EOY tracks poll said that it was ambient music for people who had never listened to ambient music before (or something like that). not sure where that came from but the track reeks of eno/badalamenti/classic new age, maybe a bit pastichey but imo it uses those templates for different compositional ends. and it has a pop song stuck inside of it, which puts it in a different category anyhow
