FIGG GET THE MONEY YEA

― Raymond Cummings, Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:44 (fourteen years ago)

fukkin love this dude

― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

Right?

― Raymond Cummings, Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:49 (fourteen years ago)

pretty sure i'm in the minority on ilm in preferring kendrick

― art dealin' thru the west coast (tpp), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

pretty sure you're not!

― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

I'm with you full force, tpp.

― dr dre throwing dubstep balloons (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

I wish he'd do a mixtape where he just rhymes stuff with "Figg"

― Raymond Cummings, Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:51 (fourteen years ago)

just spent most of the evening listening to schoolboy q

― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:51 (fourteen years ago)

I need to hear more Kendrick so I can weigh in

― Raymond Cummings, Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:51 (fourteen years ago)

the only person on ILM who I've actually seen say "I like Schoolboy Q more than Kendrick Lamar" is D-40

― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

i like setbacks better than section 80, does that count?

― pandemic, Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:55 (fourteen years ago)

seem to remember a fair few ppl expressing pandemic's opinion. i won't really contest it since section 80 does kinda drag. kendrick's best verses just blow me away though.

― art dealin' thru the west coast (tpp), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:59 (fourteen years ago)

I like SchoolboyQ better, though the more I listen to section 80 the more I like it. It's def a grower.

― Regional Tug (irrational), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

i prefer q to kendrick too, yeah

― diln (k3vin k.), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:01 (fourteen years ago)

POLL

― dr dre throwing dubstep balloons (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:01 (fourteen years ago)

i like some of his songs, still think it's weird/disheartening when a rapper uses the word "fags" and no one seems to think it's a problem, not really interested in a big discussion about it because i know it's been talked to death but i'm just tired of it. sorry.

― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:01 (fourteen years ago)

ok i know this is a schoolboy q thread but i LOVE that bit in the A.D.H.D video in the empty office building when the cute girl in typing on a non-existant type-writer and kendrick is pretending to pass her some invisible papers

HIGH TOLERANCE WHEN YOUR AGE DON'T EXIST LIKE WOAAAAAAAAAH

― art dealin' thru the west coast (tpp), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:11 (fourteen years ago)

"I like Schoolboy Q more than Kendrick Lamar" is D-40

I didn't like Section 80 at all but am curious about this dude

― max buzzword (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:13 (fourteen years ago)

What did you not like about it?

― dr dre throwing dubstep balloons (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:14 (fourteen years ago)

granted I only listened to it twice but I really did not dig the production

― max buzzword (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:15 (fourteen years ago)

'blessed' off the new schoolboy q is really nice effort from both of these guys actually

― art dealin' thru the west coast (tpp), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:18 (fourteen years ago)

They all use the same in-house producers for the most part, fwiw.

― dr dre throwing dubstep balloons (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:19 (fourteen years ago)

There should be an annual award for best mockery pf Jay-Z's BP3 aaaauh adlib

― Raymond Cummings, Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:51 (fourteen years ago)

Yea you know what I'm rocking on today's drive home

― Raymond Cummings, Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't heard the new Schoolboy Q album, but the production on Setbacks seems pretty slight compared to Section.80 to me. And Kendrick is a lot more charismatic and a better songwriter imo.

― lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Friday, 10 February 2012 02:44 (fourteen years ago)

the production on the new schoolboy is pretty cool and even tho i wouldn't agree i'd hear an argument that from that standpoint it trumps section.80, but in any other facet i think it's kendrick by a pretty large margin

― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 February 2012 02:47 (fourteen years ago)

kendrick is just a much better songwriter... q hits on some good stuff on a few songs on the album but it's still pretty amateurish in a lot of places to me

― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 February 2012 02:48 (fourteen years ago)

and not amateurish in a way that i guess i'm attracted to... just sorta skating by on 'vibe' and all that

― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 February 2012 02:49 (fourteen years ago)

how was the production 'slight,' like what do you mean by that?

the production on section80 was kind of hokey to me in parts, v grandiose & all that

― D-40, Friday, 10 February 2012 04:48 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i agree with that

― diln (k3vin k.), Friday, 10 February 2012 04:49 (fourteen years ago)

yeah kendrick made some real corny choices on section.80 but i don't think it's a huge deal

― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 February 2012 04:51 (fourteen years ago)

cosign n/a's post. otoh most of the music I listen to is dudes talking about who they're going to kill & with what gas-powered garden tool so glass houses I guess

― unlistenable in philly (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 10 February 2012 05:08 (fourteen years ago)

haha

― diln (k3vin k.), Friday, 10 February 2012 05:14 (fourteen years ago)

"And Kendrick is a lot more charismatic"

This is basically what it boils down to for me. His voice is v engaging/unique.

Having said this, SQ's new album is probably my favorite release so far this year.

― dr dre throwing dubstep balloons (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 10 February 2012 05:29 (fourteen years ago)

TS: Schoolboy Q vs Schoolkids OZ

― Number None, Friday, 10 February 2012 11:34 (fourteen years ago)

This dude is amazing! I had also slept of Kendrick Lamar before now... Damn, great discoveries.

― Clarke B., Friday, 10 February 2012 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

(slept on)

― Clarke B., Friday, 10 February 2012 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, likewise

― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 10 February 2012 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

He reminds me SO MUCH (especially in the grain of his voice but even his flow) of a mid-'90s MC I used to listen to a lot that I cannot recall... I only had his stuff on some now long-lost mixtapes my buddy made me...

― Clarke B., Friday, 10 February 2012 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

Ah, shit; I remembered--Saafir:

― Clarke B., Friday, 10 February 2012 18:01 (fourteen years ago)

Does any of this stuff come out on vinyl? I wanna give these dudes some $$$ somehow, preferably not via iTunes...

― Clarke B., Friday, 10 February 2012 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

the production on section80 was kind of hokey to me in parts, v grandiose & all that

yeah, this annoyed me, the R&B gloss

― flopson, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:12 (fourteen years ago)

best thing i've heard from any of these dudes

― flopson, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:13 (fourteen years ago)

https://soundcloud.com/topdawgent/that-part-black-hippy-remix-1

Ab-Soul used to be an actual good rapper, I have no idea what happened. The rest of the dudes acquit themselves pretty well.

Also, Blank Face is out today.

― poolboy skew (voodoo chili), Friday, 8 July 2016 13:33 (ten years ago)

I have just been listening to Blank Face, not feeling a lot of it - maybe I'm just not in the mood for it. I keep waiting for habits and contradictions 2 tbh.

― calzino, Friday, 8 July 2016 13:46 (ten years ago)

"Man of the Year" is still song of the year

― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 8 July 2016 14:50 (ten years ago)

^might be right

im liking this though, not sure i heard a standout killer jam but all m/l was pleasing

― johnny crunch, Friday, 8 July 2016 20:03 (ten years ago)

I had a bit of a stoned epiphany listening to Blank Face last night and have decided it is pretty dope after all.

― calzino, Sunday, 10 July 2016 12:19 (ten years ago)

It hasn't got anything to match some of the bangers off oxymoron, but it is still a fine album.

― calzino, Sunday, 10 July 2016 12:20 (ten years ago)

I'm in love with "Groovy Tony/Eddie Kane."

― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 10 July 2016 12:25 (ten years ago)

the tha dogg pound track bangs p good

― johnny crunch, Sunday, 10 July 2016 21:24 (ten years ago)

record is good. been pretty hit and miss artist for me but this is consistent

― moistest hoist (Spottie), Tuesday, 12 July 2016 00:21 (ten years ago)

This is amazing. Agreed that Groovy Tony/Eddie Kane is something else. Love the Vince Staples and E-40 tracks too.

― It certainly is punk of the Church of England to think that way (tangenttangent), Sunday, 17 July 2016 11:31 (ten years ago)

Even despite the inconsistency of previous albums I still loved 'em, but this one hasn't got a dud track on it and is probably his best album yet. But still my fave ever Q tracks are on habits.. and oxymoron.

― calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 13:01 (ten years ago)

I don't know those albums at all - this is my introduction. I'll definitely revisit older stuff on the strength of this though.

― It certainly is punk of the Church of England to think that way (tangenttangent), Sunday, 17 July 2016 13:07 (ten years ago)

Oxymoron is at least half an alltime classic album, plenty on it to love.

― calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 13:16 (ten years ago)

John Muir is another cut off Blank Face i keep repeating.

― calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 16:30 (ten years ago)

yep

― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 17 July 2016 16:31 (ten years ago)

JoHn Muir is indeed a highlight, classic rider anthem with crisp live drums

You gotta admire the man's dedication to the capital "H" meme

― poolboy skew (voodoo chili), Sunday, 17 July 2016 16:51 (ten years ago)

i don't know what i think yet, it did sound aimless as i've seen said, but strong, likely a grower

― j., Sunday, 17 July 2016 21:49 (ten years ago)

I felt like that at first, it is deffo a grower and has a lot of strength in depth.

― calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 21:59 (ten years ago)

good album imo

― based stress reduction (crüt), Monday, 18 July 2016 14:46 (ten years ago)

this sounds great on first listen to me

can't tell if there's anything as good as 'man of the year' or 'collard greens' but there was a huge gap between those 2 and the next best track on oxymoron, this is way more consistent

― flopson, Thursday, 21 July 2016 20:11 (ten years ago)

Yeah this was my feeling as well

― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 21 July 2016 21:25 (ten years ago)

Well I'd put "studio" up there but more for bj the Chicago kid

― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 21 July 2016 21:25 (ten years ago)

"John Muir" is a serious standout for me

― Number None, Thursday, 21 July 2016 21:48 (ten years ago)

new vid for that btw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcV3jIqKznc

― Spottie, Thursday, 21 July 2016 21:50 (ten years ago)

I can't believe how much better than Oxymoron this is, replace THat Part with the Black Hippy remix and drop the (sadly ignorable) Miguel collab and it's even better

― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 31 July 2016 06:15 (ten years ago)

amazing video

― bunny slopes, Sunday, 31 July 2016 18:24 (ten years ago)

Amazing track as well, it sits easily amongst his finest work

― calzino, Sunday, 31 July 2016 18:54 (ten years ago)

i'm in

― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 31 July 2016 21:11 (ten years ago)

I can't believe how much better than Oxymoron this is

is it possible that oxymoron is not as bad as it seemed

― j., Thursday, 1 March 2018 15:26 (eight years ago)

I like all his last 3 albums, none of them are perfect but they are still totally ace.

― calzino, Thursday, 1 March 2018 15:32 (eight years ago)

blank face is kinda perfect to me

― gospodin simmel, Thursday, 1 March 2018 18:02 (eight years ago)

Was just blasting out JoHn Muir and thinking: another new Schoolboy Q alb badly needed.

― calzino, Thursday, 30 August 2018 21:27 (eight years ago)

How popular is he? I really like him but I feel like he ain't talked about as much as A$AP Rocky or anyone from the mumble crew.

― Van Horn Street, Thursday, 30 August 2018 21:48 (eight years ago)

that's a bit sad, can't wait for the new lp to drop tho.

new album out today--it felt like there was a weird lack of hype for this one, idk why.

― mourning joe (voodoo chili), Friday, 26 April 2019 14:52 (seven years ago)

gave it a full listen this morning. feels low-stakes and fragmented compared to Blank Face. some good moments and cool production but weirdly unambitious. some grating hooks, too.

― Simon H., Friday, 26 April 2019 14:57 (seven years ago)

yeah, i figured from the pre-released tracks that it wouldn't be as ambitious or eclectic as blank face, but whatever, every artist reserves the right to make minor works every once in a while.

― mourning joe (voodoo chili), Friday, 26 April 2019 14:58 (seven years ago)

I don't think he's charming enough to coast through bang average material or something. what a disappointment :(

― calzino, Friday, 26 April 2019 15:17 (seven years ago)

yeah, this is pretty listless, with a couple exceptions (5200, Numb Numb Juice, maybe the Cudi collab).

― mourning joe (voodoo chili), Friday, 26 April 2019 15:26 (seven years ago)

― the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 November 2024 15:34 (one year ago)
