Video Killing Radio Stars

Perhaps dating as far back to "Rock Me Tonight" by Billy Squier (wherein the estimable composer of "the Stroke" danced himself out of public favor), videos can sometimes *BACKFIRE* and do more harm than good to an artist. Was just watching the video for the latest Red Hot Chili Peppers single (wherein Anthony Keidis is kidnapped by a taxi driver) and was instantly put off.

In your opinion, which videos sullied both the song they plugged and the artist who made them?

Well, it's just now i really thought about it.

...which is to say, they haven't warranted real consideration for some time.

If I'm not mistaken, there was an awful Spin Doctors video that was pretty much the last nail in the coffin for them. I think the video consisted of them being zany and throwing paint on each other; for the minute-or-so excerpt I saw, I remember the feeling of discomfort, like "I don't like these guys anyway, but I feel bad for them for putting out such an embarrassing video."

Then again, the Beastie Boys essentially started their popularity streak with their most embarrassing video, "Fight for Your Right" (I know, I know, it was supposed to be dumb, and I suppose it has a certain charm, but Jesus...a pie fight?!).

There should be some kind of international law that bars Alanis Morrisette from making or starring in videos of any kind.

I suppose, Ernest, but the video for "Fight for your Right" fit the song perfectly. Stupid Song. Stupid Video. Brilliant.

Alanis Morrisette's songs are pretty dire to begin with, but you're right -- coupled with the visuals (particularly the insufferably pious "Thank You," which featured the eqine songstress naked) they are unspeakably offensive.

Billy Squire. Like "Stroke me Stroke me " didn't already prove he was square??

Wasn't "The Stroke" the video where he was rolling around on satin sheets? That was the video that finished him; I'd say "Everybody Wants You" was the high water mark that that video managed to obliterate all memory of.

Whoops, brainfart, "The Stroke" came before "Everybody Wants You", so it was obv. another video that had the sheets. Probably the one mentioned in the first place. Heh.

Is "Rock Me Tonight" the video where he ended up suing the director for making him look like a girl?

Romeovoid "Never Say Never." Color me shallow.
