love that one too.

on twitter, i've gotten recommendations for "the entire gillian welch catalog," patti smith's gone again, and fairport's "meet on the ledge" (which has sandy denny on it).

courtney's nobody's daughter has lots of juicy death/dread stuff, both in lyrics and mood.

textile in thighville (get bent), Friday, 10 February 2012 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

Dolly Parton's "Down From Dover" is another one that hits the spot a little more sweetly...but that's just the sweet smell of death

Euler, Friday, 10 February 2012 23:13 (thirteen years ago)

spotify also has versions by nancy sinatra and marianne faithfull!

I feel like Mary Margaret O'Hara's "Body In Trouble" puts across a really peculiar brand of dread.

Also Ute Lemper singing Scott Walker's "Scope J"

Axolotl with an Atlatl (Jon Lewis), Friday, 10 February 2012 23:35 (thirteen years ago)

Mazzy Star "Taste of Blood"

max buzzword (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 10 February 2012 23:37 (thirteen years ago)

while we're talking about "silver dagger," i first heard the song via joan baez:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDuvjqO5WI4

textile in thighville (get bent), Friday, 10 February 2012 23:38 (thirteen years ago)

actually "Taste of Blood" is kind of jaunty... something off Hope's more recent "Through the Devil Softly" is probably more appropriate. tbf I have zero idea what 99% of Hope Sandoval's songs are about.

max buzzword (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 10 February 2012 23:39 (thirteen years ago)

Hope Sandoval's "Down the Steps" is about death. the lyrics are unusually direct by her standards (except for the parts where she mumbles), and she sounds really disturbed and forlorn here — quite different from her usual chilled-out melancholy.

There were nights, and mornings, when you'd come to me. Find your way into my bones, my joints, into my venes. Like an animal you called your darkness around me you spelled your name in charcoal all over my body.
But these days I just walk with you. These days, I let you stay. A little further away but I'll walk with you These days, I let you stay.

Sanpaku, Saturday, 11 February 2012 22:16 (thirteen years ago)

^ Really more easily interpreted as living with chronic depression than horror dread or mortality dread, but I think it still belongs in any 2011 women living with dread songbook.

Sanpaku, Saturday, 11 February 2012 22:22 (thirteen years ago)

Happy Rhodes is the queen of this kind of thing.

Tim F, Saturday, 11 February 2012 23:46 (thirteen years ago)

"Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone" just came on my stereo, as done by Catherine Irwin of Freakwater, but there's also great versions by June Carter Cash: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVUQo3BXaqw (from almost her last recordings) and the Walkabouts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x39VP1mpnDE.

YES. Every song really.

Something about Stina's unemotive style really fills even less obviously portentous material with that sense of creeping dread; So This Is Goodbye is a walk in the park next to Dynamite but even that strikes me as very eerie and filled with with dramatic foreshadowing.

wow, so much good music on this thread....
unregistered, thanks for the ola belle reed... great stuff, such a powerful voice....
also, check out molly o'day's "don't sell daddy any more whiskey"... baby crying it's head off through the whole track - really hard to listen to....

also also, that judy renske track near the top of the thread is completely insane... just heavy apocalyptic doom....

thread probably needs some carla bozulich/geraldine fibbers/evangalista.... not sure which track would be most dreadful though......
