I'm really digging this slow, doomy Country music - is this a thing, and can I hear more of it?

What I mean is stuff like the latest Earth album, Josh T. Pearson's 'Last Of The Country Gentlemen, that Colin Stetson cover of 'I'm So Lonelsome I Could Cry'. Not really a big country aficionado, so what else can I hear in this vein?

Laughing Gravy (dog latin), Saturday, 11 February 2012 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

You could try Townes van Zandt's most desolate stuff, like "Nothing", "Rake", "Lungs", "Kathleen", maybe even "Our Mother the Mountain".

Songs;Ohia's "Ghost Tropic" should be right on. Also search Jason Molina's albums released under his own name.

Cowboy Junkies' "Trinity Sessions" is very slow, but not really doomy at all I guess.. Great album though..

Mule, Saturday, 11 February 2012 17:41 (fourteen years ago)

Slow, doomy Country - you just described the Country Teasers. That's some cool, whacked out stuff. With dollops of Twang. They do a cool version of Stand By Your Man.

oh hello thank you for making me listen to the last Earth album, this is exactly the kind of thing I want more of (I've long wanted Sunn 0))) or similar to cover Reba/Bobbie Gentry's "Fancy"), will check out the other titles mentions herein.

Anybody who liked the last two Earth albums are directed to last year's Barn Owl album Lost in the Glare.

the czars cover album 'sorry i made you cry', slow, country-ish, john grant's voice. more dreamy than doomy though.

Barn Owl = A+ band name

The recent Zachary Cale record might fit the bill. Also, the Bry Webb solo record.

I have to be in the mood for it as it's extremely soporific, but yes. The bonus tracks including "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" are pretty essential.

The Invisible Superstars (dog latin), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 11:03 (fourteen years ago)

Charlie, do you know the Lift To Experience album?

Trinity Sessions is great. Maybe Is A Woman by Lambchop? Different kind of doom.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 11:28 (fourteen years ago)

No I haven't heard LTE yet, but I know I oughta. I remember having a dream (maybe 10 years ago now) where I bought a Lambchop album and loved it, but I didn't in real life and never heard them outside a couple of front-cover comps.

The Invisible Superstars (dog latin), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 11:36 (fourteen years ago)

Not as slow or doomy maybe, but I've always had a mental association between JTP and William Elliot Whitmore. And any other country artist with three names prob.

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 11:50 (fourteen years ago)

In which case, LTE and Is A Woman are absolute must-haves.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 13:34 (fourteen years ago)

Bill Callahan and Bonnie Prince Billy both fit into this category, I'd say.

first google result for barn owl band leads to this
http://barnowlband.com/images/BarnOwlBand11.jpg
Since its inception in 1991, the band's mainstay gig has been playing for a monthly barn dance for the Central Iowa Barn Dance Association in Ames, Iowa.

Probably not doomy, but they seem cool.

I don't think I was the only person I know to be disappointed by the Josh T Pearson album. Ever since falling for his charm and melodies, very late at night at ATP a few years back, for seemingly ever I was waiting for him to put those particular songs to record. He released his debut solo LP and none of them were there! None of the charm or melodies it seems either. Sad. Check out the To Hull and Back live bootleg.

everyone on various websites only talk about Dead Meadow as a stoner/psych band but IMO they have a definite alt-country/americana feel.

Also -- Bain Wolfkind, I can't rep for him enough. Lots of slide guitar and dark, moody telecaster.

#1 Inspector Spacetime Fanboy (Viceroy), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 19:37 (fourteen years ago)

listen to the last walkabouts album "travels in the dustland". it is slow, folkish, dark, hypnotic and additionally the female singer has got one of these great american conutry voices. check "every river will burn":

other bands which could be of interest. the psychedelic mazzy star with hope sandoval's sleepy-sexy voice, opal which was the band before. maybe low and their slow spiritual music. eleventh dream day if you like fuzzy guitars. not to forget kurt wagner's lamchop and their slow american music full of soul and love. there areloads of bands which could be called, slow, doomy country music.

Digging that Walkabouts tune.

Jesse Sykes fits this perfectly. Also mentioned her on the women sing about death & dread thread a few days back. Two from her below. She also sang with SunnO)))/Boris on Sinking Belle - nice and doomy but not so country.

There's lots to mine from the Barn Owl seam.

I'd heavily recommend Evan Caminiti's West Winds and the forthcoming Thrill Jockey LP from other member Jon Porras sounds like it will nail it too...

Recorded by Jon (otherwise known as one half of Barn Owl) at home and in his practice space, Black Mesa is a reflection on desolation and the search for light in a barren land. Recorded over the span of 10 months, each track materialized slowly over time. Black Mesa features seven composed tracks of meditative, electric guitar embellished with improvised atmospherics and white light feedback. The album follows an outlaw wanderer who ventures deep into the desert only to discover the Black Mesa, a bridge between worlds (as related to string theory or multiverse theory). Inspired by the hazy Americana of Sandy Bull, Popol Vuh, and Neil Young, Black Mesa endeavours to explore the depths of drone and ambient music.

Does The Castanets (circa Cathedral) count? It's kind of countryish, bleakish.
