In an article for non-music political monthly Prospect Magazine Gay Dad's drummer looks back on the rise and fall of his band and demise of Britrock.

Must admit that nothing here makes me regret never having heard a note by his band.

That's the funniest thing I've read all year.

I may even click the link at some point as well.

I read a reduced version of that on the sunday times. did you know that rec companies are out there to make a quick buck? Hold the front page!

the whole idea of the drummer from Gay Dad writing for Prospect is straight out of Thrills / Talk Talk Talk.

mind you, so was Ozzy Osbourne appearing at Buckingham Palace. so are a lot of things these days ...

I somehow managed to get about half way through before giving up. I can only offer him 3 words... boo fucking hoo

Since when have the repetitive slogans of clubland been "get yourself together" and "shine on tonight"?

Gentile or Jew
O you who turn the wheel and look windward,
Consider Momus, who was once handsome and tall as you.

I actually thought that it was a fairly interesting read. Not much that I haven't heard before, with regards to the music industry. But the whole Gay Dad hype phenomenon was something that I found fascinating at the time. I was curious to see the reasoning/motivation/actual story behind it.

Because anyone who tells me that Hype is a good thing, and it doesn't hurt the music industry, I point them in the direction of Gay Dad.

I thought it was kind of interesting, too... he certainly doesn't save himself from a little flagellation. I don't think he quite understands the US record industry, but he knows the UK scene intimately. I've honetly never heard Gay Dad, and only heard the name in the last couple years, so I harbor no hatred for them, as you all seem to.

andy, Tuesday, 17 September 2002 18:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't harbour any particular hatred towards Gay Dad, I just don't think they were much cop. I wish they had lived up to their hype, coz there were some k3wl soundbites among it all - "avatars of aheadness" is certainly better that, er, "beatles, are kid", for example. I thought the article was very good as well, and though as mentioned above, there wasn't anything especially new & w0w in th3r3, it was interesting to read something from the inside, so to speak.

This is a bit long... will have to read it at work tomorrow *cough*. But I had a bit of love for Gay Dad. The singer used to be a music critic for Mojo and the like and had the epiphany that he could do Brit rock as well as anyone else. Forms band. There was even a manifesto on their webpage on what you need to do to form said band (including an offensive yet impossible to forget name). They seemed to have got the hype part down perfectly, just couldn't QUITE get the music up to snuff. Andy Bell was supposed to play guitar for them but Oasis stole him away.

Anyway, looking forward to reading this. Should be verrrrry interessssting.

it is still quite absurd that Prospect has been reduced to employing *him*, though: they are a credible magazine otherwise

There has already been a "woke" T Rex. They were called Gay Dad and their one album was brilliant.

So, this is where the ILX "Drummer from Gay Dad" thing comes from.

Cheers

Amused that this tweet must be part of some conversation of ppl lamenting the lack of a woke T-Rex, something I didn't previously know there was such demand for.

Why do people who hate music write about music?

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 19 April 2022 13:50 (four years ago)

Cheers for that!

Mark G, Tuesday, 19 April 2022 18:31 (four years ago)

Ok, I've read the article. Hmm.

And now I've read the reactions from ilxors past and, um, yeah past.
