Pop Excuses

My sister once informed that, after being subjected to an afternoon of Louder Than Bombs, that she could never like The Smiths, as she preferred songs where she, "could hear the words they're saying."!?

So, what are the worst "excuses" that you have heard, or used, for not liking a particular band/genre? The more ridiculous the better.

I don't see how any "excuse" is a ridiculous excuse, particularly not your sister's - what, exactly, is wrong with disliking a singer whom you can't understand? A lot of people do it, just like a lot of people like certain songs because they can't make out the singer. It's just personal taste.

So yeah, this isn't a question I'm fond of because unless the excuse is, "Because it's marketed music" or "Because I don't like the fans of the band" (i.e. two things that have nothing to do with the music), then I don't see how any "excuse" is a bad one.

Of all singers who could be accused of being mush-mouthed or incomprehensible, Morrissey is hardly a suitable candidate. You could probably accuse Richard Hell, Darby Crash, Bob Dylan or Michael Stipe of this crime, but never Morrissey. One might find him annoying to cloying degrees, but his singing diction is unimpeachable. If that's the reason your sister doesn't like the Smiths, perhaps she should entertain the notion of visiting an audiologist.

My cousin's idea of hip-hop.

Portishead are no good because Beth Orton sings a quartertone flat

im odd in the aspect that i'd rather see my favcorite bands fail with 6 cd's than see them get popular..after all their "my" band. also a horrid excuse to stop enjoying a bands song if it's on the radio.

Concerning Prince:

"He's a fag."

That's physically disgusting.

"They can't sing" - Indie

"It's not music" - electronica, or anything without verse/chorus vocals

"It's too samey" - house

"It's shit" - pop/chart

i was recently informed by a fifteen year- old that all rap was basically just 'some big guy swearing over a heavy beat'. disturbing racial implications aside, the question remains why any fifteen year-old would not love that.

My friend Suzanne on Belle & Sebastian:

"There's too much... singing "

I think she quite likes them now, though.

That's the reason I liked rap or hip-hop when I was 15. That and the skits...where they killed people! It was like listening to a really bad R-rated movie.

Several friends of mine won't listen to it because it represents the pathology of modern America, or something.

But then I won't listen to Kraut rock, because I think it represents the pathology of people who own too many sweaters.

six months pass...
I won't listen to later R.E.M. because Micheal Stipe went from being a fag to being a really big fag.
