I found this piece of news...
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of ‘Thick As A Brick’, on April 2nd Ian Anderson will release a sequel to the original album.
Note: Ian Anderson, not Jethro Tull.
Still, there are a great many films where the sequel is as good as the original, a couple even better.
Regarding Music Albums... hmmm... does the presence of a "2" indicate a 'you really should find the original and not bother with this one' ?

Led Zeppelin I, Led Zeppelin II and Led Zeppelin III were every bit as good as the Toy Story series.

should be a distinction between sequels and a numbered series of self-titled albums imo

also i think every single '90s rapper still recording has done at least one sequel of an old album at this point
I thought Past Masters II really progressed the series.

Bat Out of Hell and The Blueprint are the only other album franchises I can think of at the moment.
Blueprint 2 arguably better than the first.

what? i don't like to say this, especially not to you, but shut up

no don't shut up, explain yourself
― CANDY aka JUNK (some dude), Friday, 17 February 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)
Relax. I didn't say Blueprint 3 or anything.

really you just should say "imo" instead of "arguably" because that implies the argument is ever going to go more than one way for the overwhelming majority

Neil Young's Harvest Moon a sequel to Harvest. Liked the title track, rest of album more uneven.
Destroy: Nas' Stillmatic
The Beach Boys had Shut Down, Vol. 2, which I'll note because Capitol marketed it as a sequel to Shut Down which wasn't even a Beach Boys album (it was a compilation of car-themed songs from different bands).
And of course there's Harry Chapin's "Sequel", which follows the couple from his earlier hit "Taxi" ten years down the road, to a similar tune and to excellent effect IMO.

is Lil Wayne's Tha Carter franchise the only album series where the sequels are far bigger than the originals?

There's a Heliocentric Worlds volume 3 which is just as good as the first two.
Also, Bill Dixon has a bunch of these:
In Italy, Vol. 1 & 2Vade Mecum, Vade Mecum IIPapyrus Vol. 1 & 2
However, the two volumes were recorded at the same session, and released as two volumes ostensibly because Soul Note didn't like releasing two-disc sets.

I think Queensrych did an Operation Mindcryme II. I can't believe it's any good.

Of course, "Tubular Bells II"
.. which was a slightly altered version of the original (new tunes, but the basic structure was the same)
.. and "Tubular Bells III" (no idea, I get the impression it was some sort of rave/balearic influenced version but who knows? anyone?)
