i will be in a supermarket, shopping by myself on a day that is neither warm nor cold, rainy nor sunny. i will be pushing an empty shopping basked back and forth between displays of discounted items that i will not eventually buy. i will hear the next great american love song over the store's pa system at very low volume. it will sound like faint twinkling, the tuneful rumpling of foil over which a soft voice hovers. i will be able to make out only the occasional word and snatch of melody. "love" "baby" "forever". i will buy some toothpaste.
