Luscious Jackson: Classic or dud

What I heard of "In search of Manny" sounded good but when I got "Natural ingredients", it sounded weak except for "Energy sucker". What I've heard since then (their single afew years back called "Under your skin") didnt sound too hot either.

Well, you needn't worry too much about them, as they disbanded about a year or so back. Good for the odd single ("Daughers of the Kaos," "Naked Eye," "Lady Fingers") but not the stuff of legend either. I wouldn't tar them with the epithet "dud" however.

'In Search of Manny' is a classic if I remember correctly. Used to play that one all the time way back inna 93? 94? Playful, funky and unpretentious in a nice way. 'Natural Ingredients' was pretty good, but after that I lost interest. Not really classic...mmm, Cud seems to be the latest description of such a band (not in Cud the band though. They were of course all-out Dud).

Omar, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pretty dudworthy. Everything they played seemed so fake to me. Like every bit of it was contrived.

Tim Baier, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Citysong" was a decent single as well....but I do sympathize with folks who cite their "hipness" quotient far over-extending their "actual talent" quotient. By sheer proxy of the fact that they were signed to the Beastie Boys' Grand Royal label and that drummer Kate Shellenbach used to be herself a Beasite Boy, you'd think their music was a veritable gift from the gods. Alas, it wasn't. Once again, the odd decent single here and there, but ultimately far from essential.

When I flew to America some years' back the in-flight video channel had Luscious Jackson's 'Naked Eye' on it, and I got well into the song and bought the album it was on. Unfortunately the version on that had a sucky mix nothing like as kickarse as the one on the single.

This suggests that all songs should be remixed.

The Dirty Vicar, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Manny" is good, prob. the best Grand Royal record outside the Beastie Boys, but beyond that not much. I guess Dud.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of love for Luscious Jackson here?

Playing 'Electric Honey' and 'Fever In Fever Out' for the first time in yonks, ten years probably. I forgot how good this is! It's so breezy and lush, uncomplicated ear candy. 'Ladyfingers' for life btw.

Ladyfingers has ended up being my favorite LJ song of all, but I did listen to In Search of Manny for the first time in eons the other day and that was a really good 30 minutes.

Sad quote from the interview, "Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore in Sonic Youth were probably the ultimate example of "Wow, this can be done." [being in band and raising child/ren]

Yeah, the tune is not great, more like Jill Cunniff's recent solo work than anything on the first couple EPs or Natural Ingredients.

"Energy Sucker" was my jam for a little while but I didn't care too much for the rest. Always thought Gabby was pretty nice when she was tending at the Tile/Radio Bar back in the day

Luscious Jackson reformed, releasing new album, playing NYC and Philly

Luscious Jackson called it quits at the dawn of the new century. There was talk of a kids album a few years ago that never quite materialized but Jill Cunniff, Gabrielle Glaser and Kate Schellenbach reformed Luscious Jackson for real in 2011 (keyboardist Vivian Trimble left the band in 1998) and they are set to release their first new album in 14 years, titled Magic Hour, on November 5 via their own City Song imprint. The group produced the record themselves, with a little help from Adam Horovitz on track "So Rock On." You can check out the video for first single, "Show Us What You Got" (directed by old pal/collaborator and Breeders bassist Josephine Wiggs) below.

Luscious Jackson will be playing live too and have announced their first dates in over a decade. There's just two at the moment: November 23 at Philadelphia's Union Transfer and December 7 at NYC's Webster Hall.

I'd been following the progress of the album, but it's the first time I've heard this particular song. Very In Search of Manny-ish. *thumbs up*

one time after a show (they were opening for Urge Overkill) Gabby asked me and my friend if we had any weed, but we had left it in the car :(

piscesx, Friday, 27 September 2013 01:09 (eleven years ago)

New one is pretty good, but am I alone in preferring the Kostars record to most of Luscious Jackson's output? Not by a huge margin, but I always wished there was more than just the one Kostars record.

Picked up Fever In Fever Out in a charity shop a month or 2 ago. Was hearing echoes of Warpaint in the sound in places and wondered if there was a direct connection between the 2. Anyway, good spending of a euro methinks.

Sorry to hear about Vivian Trimble dying,

just picked up a used cd copy of “natural ingredients” (< $5) and it’s a lot more legit than i remember!

yes this is basically just “4 non blondes x acid jazz era beastie boys = ?” but somehow turns out way better than that description sounds

“what if brand new heavies were white women from new york and they tried to make an esg album”

there’s a disco track that compares favorably to post-dfa stuff like phenomenal handclap band, juan maclean, etc

the late great, Thursday, 15 June 2023 00:38 (one year ago)

I loved In Search of Manny so much and then Natural Ingredients came out and wasn't like that at all, so I've never forgiven it I think. I grew to appreciate the later albums even, but that one I'll have to continue keeping at arm's length until my grudge dies.

ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 15 June 2023 03:45 (one year ago)

There was something about the mainstream contrivance of Natural Ingredients that brought out a really charming side of Luscious Jackson. It's not the quake that was Manny, but comfort isnt a bad thing, either.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 15 June 2023 04:23 (one year ago)

well yeah “in search of manny” is obviously way better
