I don't really understand why Bela's so frquently seen as the knockout star of their catalog.

Probably because those that do not like Bauhaus, like that one.

obv they wrote better songs later on but I don't know if they ever established a better mood

All my favorites from this are from Mask... but it's near impossible to choose. Kick in the Eye it is then.

I can totally understand why the pentagrammic groove on Bela is so often viewed as a singular achievement

"Bela's" more archetypal of Goth than Bauhaus, but Bauhaus means more to a lot of people as a t-shirt than as a musical unit.

How can you forget that rumbling bass line? Shameful.

Well, I voted "Bela Lugosi's Dead". I really like the first album ("In the Flat Field" and "Stigmata Martyr" gave it some real competition) but "Bela" just seems like the standout to me. I really like the guitar noise over the bassline. I disagree that it's an obviously inferior song for this band.

I think Bela is awesome, esp that sweet beat, but I don't get why it's really the only Bauhaus song most people who are aware of a Bauhaus song are aware of (whew). I guess the answer is "The Hunger"? I think my fave Belaaaaa's Undeeeeeaaaaad experience is when they played it for really no reason at a lazer show in a planetarium in Salt Lake City, Utah. So I associate it w/Mormon planetariums now.

The problem is that the studio version of Bela wasn't easily available for a long time, as I recall. I was lucky enough to find a CD single of it back in the day but it's absence on this comp leaves a void as it's far superior to the live version.

I had a glow in the dark picture disc vinyl of it.

i love this, knew that this poll would be fun.

"All we ever wanted" is the only one I could seriously think of picking instead of Bela. Odd that it would appear on a comp as it's the perfect cultish album cut. I was thrilled that they finished their set with that one when I saw them on the last reunion tour.

The single version of Bela was, of course, also used as the theme music for Goth Talk on SNL which prolly introduced some people to Bauhaus. I like it, but not as much as the live version from Shadow Of Light:

I was v surprised to learn from wikipedia today that "Spirit" was a deliberate attempt to break into the Top 30! I would never hear that song and think "here's a band that's really angling for a hit."

listened to this a couple times today. "stigmata martyr" was robbed. "bela lugosi" was robbed-er. live version is stunning.

That's the version I posted. This being the first time I've heard it and being intimately familiar with the album version, I kind of hate it and wish it all manner of ill.

I've never been a huge fan of "Kick in the Eye" tbh but otherwise I can get w/these results. You know what is a fucking sick track that got zero votes, though, is "In Fear Of Fear." That should have gotten all the votes that Kick got. Skronk skronk skronk skronk

I always felt all I needed was the two CD volumes of this comp. Plus the BBC sessions, those are always top drawer.
