Scrawl: C or D?

Listening to my recently-acquired Plus Also Too/He's Drunk CD, I'm as amazed as ever by the passionate songwriting and beautifully raw production of their early material. I'll admit they tapered off on Travel On, Rider and Nature Film (covering the early material wasn't such a hot idea), but I still submit their one of the great 80s/'90s indie bands. Thoughts?

Mike Appelstein (mike a), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 01:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Scrawl but I find them to be very patchy. I didn't care much for Bloodsucker but Smallmouth and Velvet Hammer both have some great moments.

Their production always seemed to me to be the result of engineer incompetence rather than intentional rawness, especially on Velvet Hammer.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 01:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have much to add as I haven't heard the earlier stuff (all out of print and hard to find)but I love, love, love Velvet Hammer and Nature Film. One of the bands brought to my attention via the Typical Girls list. I don't doubt however that Nature Film at least improved upon the originals. It's a solid, tight record.

JC (JC A.), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 02:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Plus Also Too/He's Drunk were fantastic records.. (Where'd you find them on CD?) ... Scrawl is one of those bands that I can't put into words why they're so great... The closest I can come is, "Black gloves, white white tan, that's the way I catch my man uh huh."

... I loved "Travel On, Rider".. I think it was the best record released in 1995 & one of Scrawl's best. "Nature Film" had its moments - but I prefer the original versions to the rereleases. (Especially Charles)

And they're great live... In fact, they totally kick ass live.. Now I wish they would get a new drummer and get out there again.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 10:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw them several times in crowds ranging from seven (an exact count) to a few hundred and can't think of more than one or two other bands that were more powerful live. I had so much fun at their shows. How they were able to play these extremely sad songs and make you feel as if you were at the best party ever is beyond me, especially when you consider that they often had to be at work the next morning.

Wait a minute -- Steve Albini is incompetent?

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Plus Also Too/He's Drunk Classic. Don't know the other albums.

Where did you find the CD, lost mine and been looking for another copy for years.

"Why is the keg always empty?"

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 12:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Got the PAT/He's Drunk CD on eBay. Paid $20+ for it, but that's what I get for not buying it the first time. I lost my original No Other Records copy of PAT somewhere along the line...

Mike Appelstein (mike a), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Bloodsucker is probably the best thing they've ever done after the first two albums, by the way. I think Simple Machines still has some leftover copies for sale.

Mike Appelstein (mike a), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr. Applestein, of course, refers to the stash of Simple Machines goodness available via Dischord.

I started w/ Velvet Hammer, then found Bloodsucker, then paid the major label bux for their latest (last?) 2 albums, then found the other stuff via eBay. I'm partial to Nature Film (esp. their version of "Public Image"!!), though "Clock Song" is a bazillion times better on Bloodsucker. Also, the seemingly requisite duff Scrawl moment (cf. "Story Musgrave" from Travel On, Rider, "Remember That Day" from Velvet Hammer) doesn't really happen on Nature Film.

If Velvet Hammer sounds bad, it's in the mastering, not in the production. Both Bloodsucker and Travel On, Rider sound superb - well, all three do - I love those BIG FUCKING DRUMS!
And I liked their simplicity - no flowery prose, no unnecessary motions, just straight-forward honesty. (For the epitome of this, track down their cover of Wire's "Reuters".)

Pertinent info - the Simple Machines Scrawl discography, and the official Scrawl site.

Exactly what I was gonna say Davor, your a mind reader!! Now go out and find that promo with the Ted Nugent covers- yes I'm serious!!

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

If Velvet Hammer sounds bad, it's in the mastering, not in the production.

The way it's been mixed doesn't really seem to suit the songs. But that's just my opinion. My problem with Albini isn't the sounds he gets, which are fantastic, but what he does with them in the mix.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Jim, you are CLEARLY wrong, and need to be fixed. Ah, but I'm just josh(blog)ing.

And, yeah, Travel On, Scrawl (the promo EP mentioned above) is cool, both for A) the Nugent medley, and B) a demo of Nature Film's "Everyone I Saw Tonight". And, hey, another CD w/ "Louis L'Amour" on it never hurt no one.

eleven months pass...
Marcy Mays is quickly becoming one of my favorite lyricists of all time. I've got Travel On, Rider and Nature Film and really dig them both. Musically it can get a little monochromatic (esp. on the former), but Mays' minimalist style is tremendously effective for me.

Anybody know what she's up to now?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't seen her in months. Make that years. Although I think she played Comfest in Columbus this summer.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The same year Scrawl put out Travel On, Rider a group from Boston named Scarce put out an album called Deadsexy that more dynamic musically but had weaker lyrics. If you put the music from Scarce with the lyrics from Scrawl you'd have a fucking GREAT band.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I ammend, last known:

MarC/DC

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

oh my god. I don't care how old she is, I want to marry Marcy Mays. I'll get a real job and support her financially and all that. The only possible excuse for her not writing more songs is that she's leading an AC/DC cover band. AND SHE KNOWS IT!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

a group from Boston named Scarce

Providence, actually, but you RoXoR for remembering Scarce.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 22 August 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember seeing Scarce on 120 minutes (the "All Sideways" song) and loving it enough to buy the CD (used of course). I later heard the singer had some medical condition that sidelined him for a while, breaking up the band. Has he recovered and continued in anything?

nickn (nickn), Friday, 22 August 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought they were pretty good the time I saw them live, but neither of the records I heard I could get into very much.

earlnash, Friday, 22 August 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I see her out at shows fairly often. I'll convey your proposal to her, Anthony.

J (Jay), Friday, 22 August 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw her do a solo set in san francisco about ten years ago and it was amazing. velvet hammer was the most recent scrawl album at the time and I still play it because I love "your mother wants to know" so much. I didn't care as much for the later albums. I really wish she'd do a solo record though.

Found Smallmouth by chance for a buck. Great stuff. (I've heard most of their other albums but had missed this one.)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 10 December 2007 18:27 (seventeen years ago)

smallmouth features "charles," their fab answer song to kiss' "beth."

i loooooove plus also too for those ragged harmonies that always sound a little bit off, kinda like X's harmonies. fave song from that: "1=1." strange, cool version of "rocky top," too.

fact checking cuz, Monday, 10 December 2007 18:36 (seventeen years ago)

d'oh, that's he's drunk i'm talking about, not plus also too, though i like that one also too!

fact checking cuz, Monday, 10 December 2007 18:37 (seventeen years ago)

Classic all the way. Live shows were incredible, He's Drunk flawless, other records very nearly as good, particularly Bloodsucker (although I haven't listened to Travel On Rider in a while). I will be very very happy if I can somehow track down the original (i.e., faster than on Nature Film) version of "11:59."

Only band I can think of that comes close -- and who is really obviously influenced by Scrawl -- is Tizzy, but I think they've broken up.

Sara Sara Sara, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

Also, the seemingly requisite duff Scrawl moment (cf. "Story Musgrave" from Travel On, Rider, "Remember That Day" from Velvet Hammer)

WTFLOL Story Musgrave is my favourite song on that album!

Colonel Poo, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:36 (seventeen years ago)

CLASSIC! I thought they kind of "jumped the shark" when they got rid of Carolyn the drummer even if she was ruining their sound

Smallmouth is the peak for me (likes me the Gary Smith production), though I love their cover of "High Roller" which is on Bloodsucker (AMG editors reading: this track is obv not written by Marcy & Sue), which I don't really like too much otherwise.

I am not really seeing where their acute industry damage is exactly (c.f. the whole "Bloodsucker" trip), especially as compared to nearly anyone else (other artists/people/entities) affected by the Rough Trade bankruptcy (and plus also too: RT paid for that albini session anyway).

Great people, great records. Classic.

Saxby D. Elder, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:55 (seventeen years ago)

oh yeah, they did a version of "Stranglehold" too which was wicked.

Saxby D. Elder, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

I remember feeling sort of so-so about Velvet Hammer -- like it was a little samey, I think.

I haven't listened to it in at least two years. I should give it another chance.

babyalive, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

Story Musgrave one of my all-time faves, along with "Please Have Everything," the way Marcy's voice shakes kills me. Last I heard she was running a bar in Columbus? Is this true? Is she still doing music? Someone should force her to record an album of country covers, an album of punk standards, a collection of new material, and whatever else we can coax out of her...

smurfherder, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:56 (seventeen years ago)

so classic, I was fortunate enough to see them live a few times. the last time ('97 maybe?) they did a heartstopping drumless version of "Love's Insecticide". I really need to track down those major label records.

electricsound, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

Smallmouth is the peak for me

me too, "enough" & "hymn" are faves.

zappi, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 00:24 (seventeen years ago)

WTFLOL Story Musgrave is my favourite song on that album!

WTFLOL I totally forgot I wrote that! (I'm a cock.) Coincidentally, I was just listening to Travel On, Rider today. If I could take it back, I'd call "Hunting Me Down" the album's low point, & even if "Story Musgrave" doesn't do much for me, I love the album (& the group) to pieces. Velvet Hammer is still my fave, if only because Mays sounds so raw & fierce on it throughout. Was lucky enough to see them live in Boston (the Middle East) right after Elektra dropped them. Amazon.com used CD sellers have both their Elektra discs up for sale - you can snag both for about $2, it looks like (not including shipping). Sue Harshe has a MySpace page w/ some solo tracks on it - Google for it!

David R., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 02:37 (seventeen years ago)

scrawl were great. i really like "travel on, rider" and "velvet hammer".. haven't heard the first two records unfortunately! afghan whigs + marcy mays did a nice cover of "will you love me tomorrow"

Was she? I liked how she pushed the beat. Her replacement was good, but the music seemed to lose some of its tension.

I do remember them being splendid live, caught em at least 3x.

Nearly posted (roughly) the same thing I said nine years ago.

If you don't have the patience to dig out your 45s, Spotify has a bonus-tracks version of Bloodsucker with the Singles Only 7", both sides of "Your Mother Wants to Know," and the cover of Wire's "Reuters" (all excellent).

Liked xgau's 80s comments on them, archived on his site. Also, Ft. Shame, Sue Harshe's band w guitarist-songwriter Todd May (who also plays w Lydia Loveless), is subtly alluring, in a layered, Central Ohio winter's night way.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 20:26 (ten years ago)

last 3 albums are solid for sure

sleeve, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 20:39 (ten years ago)

Definitely. All killer, no filler.

It's a shame they're so underrated, especially for how insanely influential they were.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 20:54 (ten years ago)

How were they influential? I hope you are correct. Which bands are citing them? They seem like a critics/music nerd fave to me, but not sure how that translates into influence

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 5 November 2014 15:50 (ten years ago)

First time I heard Sleater-Kinney (among others) it seemed obvious they were Scrawl fans. I don't know if they actually were, but that's how I hear/heard them.

Listened to "11:59 It's January" last night. Could go for a best of Scrawl playlist.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 1 January 2017 15:51 (eight years ago)

Five songs on the hard-drive, love them all: "Charles," "Enough," "I Need You," "See," and "Tell Me Now, Boy."

clemenza, Sunday, 1 January 2017 15:59 (eight years ago)

I listened to them a ton this last year. Favorites: "Charles" (1990 and 1998 versions both essential), "Remember That Day," "Hymn."
