Madonna and Me

I've never owned a Madonna record. But this Sunday I was walking down Market and this homeless guy dressed up in what looked like a discarded George Clinton stage outfit was blaring a boombox, and as I approached Madonna's "Like a Virgin" came on, and I don't know what it was but for some reason, the tune, the production, the playing (man, those drums!) and that vocal just hit me so hard and sounded like a primordial life force it just stopped me in my tracks. That voice, which I regarded as so thin and amateurish back then sounded so... ah fuck, I don't know how to describe it, just so goddam right that I turned around and walked into Grooves used record shop and bought the lp for $4.50. It sounded pretty fine at home too, but I have to admit not as good. But what a moment! I wish I had stood there on the street and listened to the whole song and danced with the homeless guy.

Ok, this isn't a question; no response is needed... just wanted to share. I almost kind of think I like Madonna now too; I played the album at kind of low volume, though, just in case anybody heard me. I gotta work up the guts to blast it.

my olde roommates in NYC had a tape of Erotica, and I put it on one day to confirm my suspicion that "Deeper and Deeper" is one of the best house trax evah. Spanish guitar breakdowns when Basement Jaxx were still (insert cliche).

I caught that too, and assumed this would be a first person testimonial of the making of Shanghai Surprise and/or EVOL.

I'm glad I was not the only person suckered into thinking this was going to be an early Sonic Youth thread.

Early Madonna = CLASSIC. Hated her at the time, thought she was personfication of all evil, but I go back and listen to Borderline or Into The Groove and am amazed.

I can play "Like a Virgin" on guitar. It's a got a weird chord that it rides on, but after that it's easy if you can do all the lyrics (the "my love thawed out" part I remember giving me particular trouble). My favorite way to play it was on an acoustic guitar. You can make it really soulful.
