With the love for the (great) Voices From The Lake album on the 2012 techno thread, I figure it's time Dozzy had his own thread. There's also some earlier talk on this thread:
Cold, monotonous, icy techno
as well as various mentions of his mixes over the last 6 years or so.
I guess like a few other people here I got into him via the (great) mixes on mnml ssgs over the years, and indeed I don't think I've listened to much of his own productions apart from the earlier Voices From The Lake EP - what else is good?

It's one of the best albums of the year so far but it's the sort of thing that I imagine wont make a blow as big as it should.
Reminds me of GAS of course. Oddly enough this sort of monotonous, subtle techno is my best companion when I try to go to sleep. Anything else doesn't really work for me but this sort of album takes me down and out and I mean it in a good way.

I'm aware the guy creates awesome sets but none of his productions (that I've heard) really stand out for me. except maybe "Giusy." anyone can point me to the right direction?

Menta by Donato Dozzy & Cio D'or is an immense track. The album K has it's moments too.

This recording on MNML SSGS from Labyrinth 2008 was pretty amazing last time I played it.

The new album "plays Bee Mask" has some beautiful moments, particularly the percussive tracks which work better than some of the ambling, droney bits.

^I've been listening to that album daily.
Dozzy's album 'K' (on Further Records iirc) is very good. His remix of Tin Man's Nonneo is gorgeous, too. Recently Surgeon played a new remix that he did of Peter van Hoesen that sounded excellent.

I got Plays Bee Mask, and I think it's okay, but after Voices from the Lake I was expecting something, I dunno, more adventurous? With all the tubular bells and spacey drones and semi-beats this is very traditionalist ambient, you could easily imagine it was released in the 1990s by an ambient label like Recycle of Die or Fax. And don't get me wrong, I like all that 90s ambient, so this album sounds nice to me, but I don't get the idea of taking such a beaten path in 2013.

Plays Bee Mask is one of my favorite albums of the year and sent me directly to the internet to grab a copy of the Voices From The Lake LP too.

Oh, I just read some review of Plays Bee Mask, and apparently all the tracks are actually remixes of a track called "Vaporware" by an artist called Bee Mask? I had no idea about this! The album sleeve only has a minimal amount of information, I thought the title was just a conceptual gag or something... Has anyone heard the original track, is it similarly old-fashioned?
― Tuomas, Monday, 16 September 2013 07:33 (eleven years ago) link
Vaporwave is one half of Bee Mask's release on Lawrence English's Room40 label - http://goo.gl/LJhZKw . I wouldn't say it is old fashioned - then again I was like 6 in the mid 90s so don't know much about ambient music from that time. It is one of my favourite releases from last year and I highly recommend checking out Bee Mask's other stuff (especially the compilation on Spectrum Spools 'Elegy For Beach Friday').

When the Aquaplano records were first released in 2008 and 2009, emerging out of Hardwax with little fanfare, they were distinctly out of step with the way techno appeared to be heading. The minimal detour was reaching its logical endpoint, and producers were returning to the 1990s for inspiration, with Berghain and Sandwell District at the vanguard of a new techno movement. What the Aquaplano sessions shared in common were slower BPMs and finding inspiration in the 1990s, but there they parted ways. The influences these Italians were drawing on were rather different, returning to tribal rhythms and ambient textures to sketch out a much more heady, psychedelic form of techno. The results were a perfect balance of hypnotic beats and swirling atmosphere geared for a broken-in dancefloor or the hazy afterhours. Across these two records Dozzy and Nuel would go a long way towards creating the template for a brand of deep, atmospheric techno that has become much more prominent in the years since. And while many have sought to imitate this sound, few - if any - have matched what first emerged from the Aquaplano sessions. After only being available in a very limited run, it is fitting that the sonic blueprints provided by Dozzy and Nuel are now available again - and much more widely - at a time when their influence is as strong as it has ever been.

I've been listening to this a lot recently - really great.
Right now I'm listening to the 2008 labyrinth mix for the first time in ages, and it's fantastic. Does anyone have a copy of this mix?

Part 2 of the Labyrinth mix is an absolute monster. I was actually there that year but left before his set really got going....what a wally. Never come across the Ambientina mix. His Bleep 43 mix is well worth checking if you haven't heard it.

i just saw voices from the lake live and i gotta say i was a little bit disappointed. it wasn't bad but it wasn't this hypnotic subtle shifting and pulsating warm techno like on the s/t album, it was this thudding and insistent hard house or something. not what i was expecting tbh, maybe if i was expecting it i'd have enjoyed it more. there was never any relaxation or retreat into quietly beautiful moments.

Was anyone else disappointed by the Aquaplano Sessions? I can imagine those tracks working on the dancefloor, but for home listening they felt a bit too functional and harsh, lacking the depth of Dozzy's best work.
