Saw him play back in the late 1980s and still remember his performance as probably the best guitar-playing I've ever seen live. He was monstrous.

Josefa, Sunday, 4 March 2012 18:05 (thirteen years ago)

ouch. he just played in Chicago back in October at Reggies (which is like three blocks from my house.) I didn't go though, because I was travelling that weekend. fucking a

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 4 March 2012 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

He was monstrous.
Er... no pun intended.

Josefa, Sunday, 4 March 2012 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

This sucks man. RIP Ronnie

You're a notch, I'm a legend (Bill Magill), Monday, 5 March 2012 14:27 (thirteen years ago)

shit. one of the first bands whose name sort of beckoned to me from the other side of puberty - like, teenagers, wow, what's their world like, they listen to Montrose (this because I'd see, and examine with wonder, the Montrose LPs in the record collections of the daughters of the babysitters at whose houses I'd spend afternoons)

unlistenable in philly (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 5 March 2012 15:00 (thirteen years ago)

this is a bummer. RIP Ronnie

His web site makes it sound like a suicide.

Three Word Username, Monday, 5 March 2012 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

I've heard lots of bands big up that first Montrose record as a perfect album. I know Def Leppard, for example, cited it alongside "Back In Black" as this peerless hard rock model that gave them something to aim for. I was always curious, but I don't think I've ever heard a note of Montrose, who (alongside the like of UFO) somehow completely missed me by. Anyway, RIP, guy.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 5 March 2012 19:33 (thirteen years ago)

take this opportunity to check it out. Dont let the Hagar connection get to you, Sammy was perfect for this band. it's really good stuff, first album nearly flawless

I've only been listening to it for like a year based on an ilm recommendation, but I wish I had picked it up on cassette back when I first started listening to classic rock as a teenager.

I was surprised to learn that he played electric, acoustic, and mandolin on Van Morrison's Tupelo Honey. RIP.

Brad C., Wednesday, 7 March 2012 14:21 (thirteen years ago)

Good stuff by Hagar there. I would have loved to have seen the original Montrose reunited.

Huh, this first Montrose album is a bit too ur-butt rock for me, but it sounds great. Who produced it?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, duh.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

Actually, this is sort of presages Billy Squier, which is not a bad thing. Shit, who produced Billy Squier?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:09 (thirteen years ago)

(Answer: ELO and Queen engineer/producer Mack. Learn something new eery day.)

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:11 (thirteen years ago)

Ronnie Montrose also appears (on one track, and barely audible) on the first album by Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi.

誤訳侮辱, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

One thing that hasn't been mentioned much is that Montrose also produced Heathen's minor Bay Area thrash classic Breaking the Silence.

Mississippi Butt Hurt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

you know, listening to the s/t montrose record...it's kind of incredible it's from 73

it probably looks forward to what hard rock would sound like in the 80s as much as anything from that era

Mississippi Butt Hurt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 22:00 (thirteen years ago)

dude was way ahead of his time

Disco Bob & MC Criminal (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 22:02 (thirteen years ago)

the Van Halen connection is really obvious in hindsight

Disco Bob & MC Criminal (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 22:02 (thirteen years ago)

I think people figured it was a suicide back when it happened though? Still a terrible shame.

beachville, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 22:18 (thirteen years ago)

eight years pass...

Listening to the debut album for the first time right now and I was like,

a) Damn!

b) This is totally the blueprint for Van Halen, whom I had previously thought came more or less out of the blue

c) David Lee Roth really copped the steez of this singer... who is it?

d) <brain explodes>

Didn't expect to find Montrose in the NYT Crossword Puzzle today... clued as "1970s rock band that launched the career of Sammy Hagar"
