the sounds in your head

do you, like me, have a tune playing in your head - even when you're not aware of it? Have you ever tried to 'capture' and identify these ghost tunes that seem to buzz away in the background quite unasked for?

I once went on a Zen Buddhist retreat. Ten days of total silence. Somewhere towards the end I realised I had achieved a state of total, complete inner silence. Then I realised I had indeed achieved this state: apart from the drum line in Gary Glitter's Rock and Roll Part One, which was hissing quietly away in a corner somewhere...

So, what's playing on your subconscious jukebox right now? This morning I've noticed both 'German Girl' by the Lotus Eaters - not heard it in 15 years - and 'Old Mother Hubbard'. So don't by shy - some of the answers are bound to be both obscure and embarrasing...

there is never a single mment that i am "tune-free", is it a curse or a blessing? at the mo it is ms dynamite's "it takes more" as i've just read that she's won the mercury prize.

I've always got a song in my head...today it has been "Agnes, Queen of Sorrow" by Palace and a combination of the last two Scooter songs.

You've changed it! now I've got Rebel Rebel too!

hey, if that works we could keep passing on songs until EVERYONE ON ILM and soon EVERYONE IN THE WORLD has the same tune in their head. At which point the world will surely end.

But WHICH TUNE will be the lowest common denominator that 'switches' all other tunes? The Tweety Song?

Did anyone ever read that Homer Price story (by Robert McCloskey) where a mysterious record salesman comes to town and pitches his "100% Unbreakable Record" for the jukebox at the diner? They buy his record and it turns out that the song on it has the curious property of getting jammed inside everyone's head who hears it - soon the whole town is whistling it, humming it - driving themselves mad. Homer does some research in the library (I remember a picture of Homer sitting atop a huge mound of books) and finds an antidote song, that once played will erase the memory of the infernal thing forever. I think it was specific to the song in the jukebox, though. Maybe every song has an equal and opposite anti-song.

Thanks to the ILM thread, it's now Borderline by Madonna. Sigh.

I had to stop listening to music because the musicosis (yes, it has an actual name) was getting so bad. It takes several days of silence to clear everything.

Only problem is that when *I* achieve inner silence, my brain starts filling it up by writing original songs. Which is even worse, when you have a song stuck in your head which isn't even a real song but an embryonic songwriting thing. Argh!

A tune is constantly playing in my head. At the mo it's "Below and Above" by Low, purely because I just listened to it.

Musicosis? Great.

The bassline to 'Magnificent Seven' by the Clash and the drumbreak in C30C60C90go. I want to wipe the file, but I can't!

Kelly Marie 'Feels like I'm in Love' is currently the #1 smash in my head. Ah, the syn-drum.

Actually, the most infuriating experience I've had has been with 'popcorn', which stuck around in there for a month.
