Mickey-Michael-Peter-Davy. (Michael and Peter basically a tie for me--Michael's ubiquitous ski hat gives him the edge.) I sure hope Mickey runs away this.

clemenza, Monday, 5 March 2012 20:54 (thirteen years ago)

Peter is so the Monkees' George.

Eric H., Monday, 5 March 2012 20:56 (thirteen years ago)

I was trying to do that with my class...Davy/Paul and Mickey/Ringo are the easy ones. I wasn't sure how to sort out John and George.

clemenza, Monday, 5 March 2012 20:57 (thirteen years ago)

Thought it was tougher to decide whether Davy was the cheesy one or the untalented one.

Eric H., Monday, 5 March 2012 20:59 (thirteen years ago)

Davy/Paul = screaming girls, Mickey/Ringo = goofy (more than the fact they were the drummers). Figuring out who was the Monkees' angry intellectual and quiet mystic is harder.

clemenza, Monday, 5 March 2012 21:04 (thirteen years ago)

Figuring out who was the Monkees' angry intellectual might be impossible, but not who came the closest.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Monday, 5 March 2012 21:08 (thirteen years ago)

I always dug Dolenz' setup:
http://28.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lkkr6qwKP91qznyz8o1_400.jpg

Only a non-drummer could come up with something so forehead-slappingly intuitive and ergonomically perfect.

tylerw, Monday, 5 March 2012 21:12 (thirteen years ago)

Michael put out concept albums and weird videos and even wrote a novel, so yeah, I guess he's the intellectual. He never seemed angry, though--did he go through a primal scream phase after the breakup. ("I don't believe in Archies...I don't believe in Royal Guardsmen...I don't believe in MONKEES!!!")

In terms of TV personality, maybe. In terms of "legitimate musical talent," he's probably their Paul.

illegitimate musical talent > legitimate musical talent

Am I missing something wrt Peter? He always struck me as their weakest vocalist and least-distinctive instrumentalist (relatively speaking).

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Monday, 5 March 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

I was ranking them by height.

Eric H., Monday, 5 March 2012 21:33 (thirteen years ago)

Am I missing something wrt Peter? He always struck me as their weakest vocalist and least-distinctive instrumentalist (relatively speaking).

Tork was a proficient musician, and though the group generally did not play their own instruments on their first two albums, he was an exception, playing what he described as "third chair guitar" on Mike Nesmith's song "Papa Gene's Blues" from their first album. He subsequently played keyboards, bass guitar, banjo, harpsichord, and other instruments on their recordings. He also co-wrote, along with Joey Richards, the closing theme song of the second season of The Monkees, "For Pete's Sake". On the television show, he was relegated to playing the "lovable dummy".

Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Monday, 5 March 2012 21:35 (thirteen years ago)

In commentary tracks included in the DVD release of the first season of the show, Nesmith stated that Tork was better at playing guitar than bass. In Tork's commentary, he stated that Jones was a good drummer and had the live performance lineups been based solely on playing ability, it should have been Tork on guitar, Nesmith on bass, and Jones on drums, with Dolenz taking the fronting role, rather than as it was done (with Nesmith on guitar, Tork on bass, and Dolenz on drums). Jones filled in briefly for Tork on bass when he played keyboards.

Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Monday, 5 March 2012 21:36 (thirteen years ago)

xpost He was dumb. I loved him.

Eric H., Monday, 5 March 2012 21:36 (thirteen years ago)

Interesting re: Peter. I knew Tork was kind of a neo-folkie psuedo-purist (at least, as much as a Monkee could be), and I think that's why I never rated him too highly (although he was funny on the show). fwiw, I always thought Dolenz' drumming on the live "Circle Sky" was brilliant, the perfect balance of driving, ramshackle, and batshit.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Monday, 5 March 2012 21:39 (thirteen years ago)

My friend's mom had a weird dysfunctional affair with Peter, but I still love him on the show.

Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Monday, 5 March 2012 21:41 (thirteen years ago)

I heard about this in high school when my sister was into the Monkees. Basic constantly fighting and making up type of relationship, and he would disappear out of her life for months/years and then show back up again. I was very O_o hearing about it, but it was still not as bad as my friend/classmate who actually slept with Dio.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Monday, 5 March 2012 21:44 (thirteen years ago)

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 5 March 2012 21:48 (thirteen years ago)

I would have totally slept with Dio if given the chance, just so I could causally say, "Oh, is this Rainbow in the Dark? I slept with Dio once, you know."

carl agatha, Monday, 5 March 2012 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

To be fair to Peter, I don't know how much of a "relationship" it was or if the mom was more of his hookup whenever he was in town. In either case, ew. I know she ended up giving him money whenever she saw him.

The Dio story is just disturbing to even think about much less recount because this was when I was a freshman in high school, so...do the math. It was Ronnie, btw.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Monday, 5 March 2012 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

Oh but on topic:

Mike - Peter - indifferent, ranked based on the crushes I had.

xp I guess you weren't a freshman in the late '50s, huh?

Thanks to my wife's Monkees superfandom, and especially her Peter superfandom, I've seen Tork a couple of times live with his band Shoe Suede Blues, and he can definitely tear it up on the guitar. Musically, he's definitely closer to the Paul role. Temperamentally, he's closer to John. He can be a quick wit or an acerbic a-hole, and change from one to the other pretty quickly.

Flagpost Sitta (Phil D.), Tuesday, 6 March 2012 00:15 (thirteen years ago)

...and to play "what if?", there was this Douglas Adams project he tried to get off the ground in that period

"...So then, a few years ago, I was introduced to someone who became a great friend of mine called Michael Nesmith, who has done a number of different things in his career: In addition to being a film producer, he was originally one of The Monkees. Which is kind of odd when you get to know him, because he's such a serious, thoughtful, quiet chap, but with quiet reserves of impish glee. So his proposal was that we go into partnership together to make this. He's the producer, and I do the scripts and so on. We had a very good time working on it for quite a while, but I just think Hollywood at that point saw the thing as old. It's been around the block. And basically, what I was being told an awful lot was essentially, "Science-fiction comedy will not work as a movie. And here's why not: If it could work, somebody would have done it already."
