will ms dynamite ever again make a record as good as "booo!".

i haven't heard the album but the singles suggest that dynamite is typical of ukg singers in that she wants to be a "soul" artist rather than try and make a go of it in the, perhaps more marginalised, er,'sub-genre' for want of a better term. more power to her and congrats on the merc prize but do you think she'll ever again make anything as vital and exciting as that banger?

She comes near it on occasion, but in a less upfront way. See my Church of Me review (posted on 4 September) for my considered thoughts on the album.

Well some of her other MC tracks are pretty great - ie. "Ramp", that Darqwan track floating around and her appearance on So Solid Crew's "Envy". Ultimately I prefer her MCing to her singing, but I still think that a lot of A Little Deeper is really good regardless.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Also "Deal With the Matter," her track on Ed Case's album.

Ben Williams, Wednesday, 18 September 2002 11:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep, "Deal With The Matter" is great. Better than "Boo!" even...

Am I the only person who thinks that, like Craig David, she is easily better as an R&B artist than a garage one?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 12:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know. It's also possible that she's better as a garage artist than an R&B one.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 18 September 2002 12:31 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmm.

I like her R&B stuff...the single has a cool "jerkins at a hungarian carnival' kind of feel...

as for tracks as good as boo

check the 'they don't know' remix...

ps. good interview alert

"jerkins at a hungarian carnival"

that is my favourite description of any song I've read anywhere this year, although I'd probably have been more likely to say "Jerkins at English harbour or country fair in the 50s"

but Geeg, that one line of yours is still better than anything I think I've ever written

i think what i'm asking in the original proposition, rather than "is her new stuff any good?" is why do garage artists who want a bit of a career, make an lp or whatever, often seem to drop their original style in favour of a 'safer' r'n'b sound? maybe that's what she's always wanted to do, maybe garage doesn't need it's own ashanti/beyonce/even britney type figurehead, it just seems to happen a lot. it used to happen in the '90s with house 'divas' going all r'n'b when they made an album. from what some of the above posters have said she may still be making mc tunes (pun not intended), maybe i'm just not hearing them. so, post-award, is she going to morph even further into the uk's lauryn hill or not and is that a good or bad thing?

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 19 September 2002 07:27 (twenty-three years ago)

i haf no idea if this applies here, but the sad fact is that ppl often start out being a huge success in a territory they don't quite respect (possibly becz they are succcessful in it), and desire to "progress" to a territory which matches their own dream of attained professional quality

as an ethos this almost always ends up damaging the second territory: an influx of nervous reverencing by its own makers

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 09:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I think though that also there's a tradition of critics seeing soul as a 'safer' genre than more 'street' musics, so the criticism is to some extent an inevitable one.

The thing that bugs me is why half the press coverage (Alexis P!) insists on calling her a 'rapper'.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 September 2002 09:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the perceived credibility of soul over garage plays a role, the image of soul as a 'proper' grown-up genre and the bigger (international!) commercial possibilities (according to the label) oof r&b all play a part. Ms. Dynamite, is, however, on planning an all garage MC album soon, titled A Little Darker. So, who knows.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 19 September 2002 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

is she? nice one.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nice...the big question: produced by Sticky, Ed Case, both or neither?

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Or Menta?!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)
