In the summer (and autumn) of 1991, Bryan Adams' single "Everything I Do (I Do It for You)" topped the UK singles chart for 16 weeks. During that period, 42 other songs spent time in the UK's top 10. Some of them were more interesting than "Everything I Do (I Do It for You)". Some have aged better than "Everything I Do (I Do It for You)". And some were this:

But which of them is the best?

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Saturday, 10 March 2012 02:03 (thirteen years ago)

Oceanic - Insanity

but really there are at least 10 great tracks here.

jed_, Saturday, 10 March 2012 02:04 (thirteen years ago)

I turned 15 in summer 1991 - actually quite surprised that Rozalla and Oceanic are from as early as 1991, those songs were so ubiquitous in cheesy mid/late 90s nightclubs

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 10 March 2012 02:09 (thirteen years ago)

what's the story with kenny thomas?

jed_, Saturday, 10 March 2012 02:11 (thirteen years ago)

U-U-U-U-Utah Saints is my pick

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 10 March 2012 02:11 (thirteen years ago)

voted for cola boy just because

some crap (electricsound), Saturday, 10 March 2012 02:11 (thirteen years ago)

UZI NINE MILLIMETAAARRRRR

kinder, Saturday, 10 March 2012 02:11 (thirteen years ago)

Lol I didn't even see that Youtube clip at the top, it just jumped out at me in the list

kinder, Saturday, 10 March 2012 02:11 (thirteen years ago)

"Summertime" over "Let's Talk About Sex"; also like C&C, Right Said Fred, Rozalla, and a few others I'm a little less sure of.

clemenza, Saturday, 10 March 2012 02:17 (thirteen years ago)

the cola boy track sounds a bit crap now imo, thin and limp.

best is oceanic or the prodigy.

or right said fred.

jed_, Saturday, 10 March 2012 02:18 (thirteen years ago)

Gone for Sabrina Johnston because I don't think anyone else will and it's tremendous:

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 10 March 2012 02:21 (thirteen years ago)

At the time I liked these:

Heavy D and the Boyz - Now That We've Found Love
Guns n' Roses - You Could Be Mine
The Shamen - Move Any Mountain
Metallica - Enter Sandman
PM Dawn - Set Adrift on Memory Bliss
DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince - Summertime
The Prodigy - Charly
Prince and the New Power Generation - Gett Off
Oceanic - Insanity
Utah Saints - What Can You Do For Me
2 Unlimited - Get Ready for This

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 10 March 2012 02:22 (thirteen years ago)

oh ffs i didn't even see the sabrina johnston track. tremendous.

jed_, Saturday, 10 March 2012 02:24 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, like Oceanic were in any way a bad choice:

2 Unlimited - Get Ready for This

Eric H., Saturday, 10 March 2012 02:47 (thirteen years ago)

Excellent idea for a poll!

broom air, Saturday, 10 March 2012 04:29 (thirteen years ago)

You guys focus way too much on singles from 1991. "Pandora's Box" was great though. Best thing OMD did in the 90s.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 10 March 2012 09:20 (thirteen years ago)

some amazing songs in here. will rep enthusiastically for:

Bryan Adams - Everything I Do (I Do It for You)
Color Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up
Heavy D and the Boyz - Now That We've Found Love
Cola Boy - 7 Ways to Love
Paula Abdul - Rush Rush
Incognito ft. Jocelyn Brown - Always There
C&C Music Factory ft. Freedom Williams - Things That Make You Go Hmmm...
The Shamen - Move Any Mountain
Bomb the Bass - Winter in July
DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince - Summertime
The Prodigy - Charly
Prince and the New Power Generation - Gett Off
Zoe - Sunshine on a Rainy Day
Oceanic - Insanity
Martika - Love... Thy Will Be Done
Salt-N-Pepa - Let's Talk About Sex
Sabrina Johnston - Peace
Utah Saints - What Can You Do For Me
Rozalla - Everybody's Free (To Feel Good)
2 Unlimited - Get Ready for This

HOW AM I MEANT TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THOSE?

hon. mention for dannii minogue: i actually bought her debut album, on cassette. sadly i have no memory of "jump to the beat" at all.

lots of unpleasant childhood memories scattered among the greatness: specifically, erasure, guns & roses, vic reeves, monty python and most of all right said fred taught young lex about HATRED well.

lex pretend, Saturday, 10 March 2012 09:32 (thirteen years ago)

i'm tempted to vote for "peace", "insanity" or "sunshine on a rainy day", which don't seem to have survived in the public consciousness as much as "now that we found love" or U-U-U-U-U-UTAH SAINTS or "everybody's free".

lex pretend, Saturday, 10 March 2012 09:34 (thirteen years ago)

but then "get ready for this" did pave the way to 2 unlimited becoming my first ever favourite group.

lex pretend, Saturday, 10 March 2012 09:34 (thirteen years ago)

"let's talk about sex" absolutely SCANDALISED 8-yr-old me.

lex pretend, Saturday, 10 March 2012 09:34 (thirteen years ago)

fuck this is impossible

Cola Boy - 7 Ways to Love
Incognito ft. Jocelyn Brown - Always There
Kenny Thomas - Thinking About Your Love
Erasure - Chorus
Guns n' Roses - You Could Be Mine
Extreme - More Than Words
The Shamen - Move Any Mountain
PM Dawn - Set Adrift on Memory Bliss
DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince - Summertime
The Prodigy - Charly
Prince and the New Power Generation - Gett Off
Oceanic - Insanity
Erasure - Love to Hate You
Sabrina Johnston - Peace
Utah Saints - What Can You Do For Me

that's my initial narrow-down

Kony Montana: "Say hello to my invisible friend" (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 10 March 2012 09:41 (thirteen years ago)

"Insanity" is my gut instinct "this used to make me burst with joy" choice but I love love love love that Kenny Thomas joint, and then Cola Boy and "Chorus" and "Summertime" are just eternal classics

Kony Montana: "Say hello to my invisible friend" (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 10 March 2012 09:43 (thirteen years ago)

"Insanity" was a point where Mersh Rave was starting to bust into the Hitman and Her circuit and I was young and v. stupid and in love with bad nightclubs and psychedelics and luminous coloured booze

Kony Montana: "Say hello to my invisible friend" (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 10 March 2012 09:45 (thirteen years ago)

i was 8 years old and "insanity" used to make me SO HYPER

lex pretend, Saturday, 10 March 2012 09:54 (thirteen years ago)

a foreshadowing of discovering clubs 12 years later

lex pretend, Saturday, 10 March 2012 09:54 (thirteen years ago)

A lot of good stuff here, I think my Top 10 would be:

Erasure - Chorus
DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince - Summertime
Metallica - Enter Sandman
Bomb the Bass - Winter in July
Rozalla - Everybody's Free (To Feel Good)
Guns n' Roses - You Could Be Mine
Incognito ft. Jocelyn Brown - Always There
Oceanic - Insanity
Utah Saints - What Can You Do For Me
2 Unlimited - Get Ready for This

I quite like the Cher song too.

So many act's best/signature songs on this list. A real snapshot of the time.

rain came down like water falling from the clouds (snoball), Saturday, 10 March 2012 10:58 (thirteen years ago)

I'd rather poll those songs that were UK Top 20 during "Karma Chameleon"'s 6 week reign in 1983. A much better era for singles pop. :)

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 10 March 2012 11:19 (thirteen years ago)

I went for Chorus by Erasure, maybe my favourite single of theirs.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 10 March 2012 13:47 (thirteen years ago)

top 10: summertime, enter sandman, i'm too sexy, i wanna sex you up, let's talk about sex, you could be mine, now that we've found love, gett off, always look on the bright side of life, don't cry

some dude, Saturday, 10 March 2012 13:57 (thirteen years ago)

I voted for Prodge.

PM Dawn

i voted for insanity but maybe i should have gone for charly, which is materful. i hated it at the time but i was silly then and had "ideas" about how things should be.

*masterful

jed_, Saturday, 10 March 2012 15:13 (thirteen years ago)

N Vadge your video is clearly lacking in keytars and fierce coordinated dance moves as far as I can tell.

There are some truly great songs on here. At the time though I'm sure I would have said either "Let's Talk About Sex" or Erasure "Love to Hate You".

wolf kabob (ENBB), Saturday, 10 March 2012 15:13 (thirteen years ago)

Heavy D and the Boyz - Now That We've Found Love, just ahead of cola boy 7 ways to love

post, Saturday, 10 March 2012 15:47 (thirteen years ago)

'Chorus' by Erasure.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:39 (thirteen years ago)

I was in the UK for the entire Bryan Adams run (on a post-college student visa that let me work at a pub for six months). So this list is particular kind of nostalgia for me. I love a bunch of them, but I remember I did a phone interview with one of the guys from Oceanic for some freebie Manchester paper and he was real nice. So I'll vote them. (Did he/they ever do anything else?)

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)

they released remixes of "Insanity" a couple of times

Kony Montana: "Say hello to my invisible friend" (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 10 March 2012 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

I was really, really torn between The Shamen and Salt N Pepa.

And then I remembered that I seem to have 2 logins right now, for whatever reason.

So I totally cheated and voted for both! Hurrah!

Masonic Boom, Saturday, 10 March 2012 17:01 (thirteen years ago)

all 4 of everyone else's top ten-or-more narrow-downs OTM

having real trouble trying to pick just one but it might be the Shamen

It's still my ambition to live in a house like that.

rain came down like water falling from the clouds (snoball), Saturday, 10 March 2012 18:35 (thirteen years ago)

Charly was the only one of these I bought at the time so I'll vote for that.

I still play that PM Dawn lp.

So, that.

Mark G, Saturday, 10 March 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

'Love To Hate You' was my least favourite single from Erasure's Chorus album, which actually is one of my favourite albums of theirs.

Turrican OTM about the "Chorus" album. IMO i was almost like the first two singles were the two lessest tracks on the album. Many of the best, such as "Siren Song" and "Home" were never singles at all.

Can't agree - I've got that bloody song stuck in my head this morning and it's rubbish.

WBS - we need a poll for the interminable reign of Wet Wet Wet's Love Is All Around next

Let's Talk About Socks (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 16 March 2012 10:33 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, I missed this. I bought 20 of these on single at the time:

PM Dawn - Set Adrift on Memory Bliss
Erasure - Chorus
Oceanic - Insanity
Prince and the New Power Generation - Gett Off
DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince - Summertime
The Shamen - Move Any Mountain
Salt-N-Pepa - Let's Talk About Sex
Martika - Love... Thy Will Be Done
Cola Boy - 7 Ways to Love
Erasure - Love to Hate You
Sabrina Johnston - Peace
Right Said Fred - I'm Too Sexy
Rozalla - Everybody's Free (To Feel Good)
2 Unlimited - Get Ready for This
Vic Reeves and the Wonder Stuff - Dizzy
Kenny Thomas - Thinking About Your Love
Incognito ft. Jocelyn Brown - Always There
Bomb the Bass - Winter in July
Zoe - Sunshine on a Rainy Day
Color Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up

Would probably have voted for 2 Unlimited!

mike t-diva, Friday, 16 March 2012 14:23 (thirteen years ago)

I missed this too. Would have voted for either The Shamen or Martika.
