The Mosca Poll

Been really enjoying a bit of Mosca lately. What are his best tracks? Decided to go for "straight-up" tunes rather than remixes today, but sorry for any omissions. Feel free to discuss mixes though.

None of them, boring producer.

(Sorry...)

Seriously thought I was on ILE and this was about the New Orleans Italian restaurant. (In which case the proper answer is baked oysters.)

Matt DC - yeah some of it (the Dom Perignon EP in particular) is kind of boring but I still can't fault Bax / Done Me Wrong. Actually the purpose of this thread was really to see which of those two tracks people prefer.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Friday, 16 March 2012 15:07 (thirteen years ago)

I kind of like the "boringness", y'know, you're just riding on this groove and then this tiny little flourish will pop out of the mix and it's all payback.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Friday, 16 March 2012 15:09 (thirteen years ago)

Done Me Wrong because I'm reminded of dancing in sweaty warehouses decades ago by the sample of the original speed garage/UK garage song:

I love the rewind just as the bass kicks in. I think Bax is generally rated higher, but Done Me Wrong is so great.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

man, Bax is great, fuiud

The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 00:04 (thirteen years ago)

Write-in vote for "Square One (VIP)", otherwise "Bax" I guess.

Tim F, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 00:08 (thirteen years ago)

best thing mosca's done is his remix of t. williams & terri walker's "heartbeat". next best thing might be his remix of tempa t's "next hype".

i like most of his original productions in a non-committal and not wildly enthusiastic sort of way.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 00:15 (thirteen years ago)

i mean "bax" is great and all but it's not THAT great

lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 00:16 (thirteen years ago)

I would agree with that re "Bax", I think.

I know two people IRL who adore it but both have very limited knowledge of speed garage.

I don't think that always has to be the case, but it would make sense that it'd seem more exciting if you're only vaguely aware of what it's reviving.

Like a lot of tunes in that category much of its charm is situational I think, the way it rubs against the sound of other tunes in the contexts in which it's deployed.

This is me. Kind of detested Speed Garage and everything it stood for (I blame overexposure to the crappier end of the market during my student days), but now I feel I'm more ready to embrace it, so Bax and Done Me Wrong hit the spot just right, although if he'd managed to make a sort of corroboration of those two tracks, that would have been even better!

(I blame overexposure to the crappier end of the market during my student days)

no such thing IIRC

Tim F, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 10:12 (thirteen years ago)

w/e, it will take a lot to convince me of Craig David's plus points.

leaving aside that this simply reflects badly on you, Craig David has nothing to do with speed garage.

Tim F, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 10:30 (thirteen years ago)

Badly on the people around me at the time, methinks.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 10:38 (thirteen years ago)

(...no need to point out again that this was a very long time ago and my investment in club music was little to none at the time)

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 10:40 (thirteen years ago)

again, craig david has nothing to do with speed garage.

He has literally never made or guested on a speed garage track.

Tim F, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 10:41 (thirteen years ago)

fine fine, i believe you.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 10:42 (thirteen years ago)

What kind of music was all that DJ Pied Piper/Artful Dodger called then? Seriously not trolling here - I distinctly remember people calling it Speed Garage at the time (at least to begin with, and then maybe just "garage"). This must've been 1999 when I was first exposed to it (by a complete twat of a housemate no less). I know "garage / 2step" existed in other forms before all that, but never really managed to discern between the various nuances because when it was happening I just associated it with terrible student nights and half-priced Smirnoff Ice and chose to ignore it. Save for (ex-ilxor) Ambrose singing its praise on the Warpcomm messageboards, I only really got access to the kind of stuff I heard at such nights, so...

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 10:48 (thirteen years ago)

UK Garage / 2-step = skippy syncopated garage like Artful Dodger, DJ Pied Piper

Speed garage = storming bass-driven 4X4 stuff like Double 99's "Rip Groove", 187 Lockdown

Tim F, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 10:52 (thirteen years ago)

late 90s armand van helden is my immediate association with speed garage; i have no idea how anyone could think late 90s armand van helden to be a bad thing.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 10:53 (thirteen years ago)

I have no idea how anyone could think artful dodger to be a bad thing either, but here we are.

Tim F, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 10:55 (thirteen years ago)

well, indeed.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 10:57 (thirteen years ago)

If you had to endure the wealth and diversity of the nightlife on offer at Essex University, Colchester circa '99-2002 you might understand ;-)

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 10:59 (thirteen years ago)

i was in SOMERSET at the time and endured the wealth and diversity of fkn CARDIFF and yet i did not emerge with such ideas

lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 11:03 (thirteen years ago)

yes but you emerged with quite a few other ideas...

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 11:06 (thirteen years ago)

Gotta be Bax. First time I heard that on a club system and that bassline drops it just gets you moving, love it.

Square One & the VIP are ace too. For simular reasons, after the breakdown on the orig is well nice.

Dom Perignon & Orange Jack sound so good in house sets, they just kick hard and keep rolling.

I like Tilt Shift but the Swing Ting remix is the one for me on that one.

jimitheexploder, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 11:07 (thirteen years ago)

with tilt shift, it's the cheeky burgaboy mix i like best <--vmic

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 11:13 (thirteen years ago)

xxpost - cardiff is a lot more exciting a town compared with colchester, where (if you're a student) you're pretty much cautioned on your first day about straying outside the campus after dark for fear of wandering into the wrong pub and being set on by squaddies. in retrospect this was obviously ridiculous, but these superstitions did nothing to encourage kids to mingle with the rest of town, and many students stuck rigidly to the campus "village" for kicks. being a skinny smalltown introvert with no rhythm and fewer muscles, i was one of those for the first couple of years ;-)

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 11:19 (thirteen years ago)

Hasn't done anything to touch Square One/Nike since, so one of them. Gold Bricks is underrated though
