I forgot all about The BC-52s!

stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 16 March 2012 14:41 (thirteen years ago)

this one's a no-brainer.

ledge, Friday, 16 March 2012 14:42 (thirteen years ago)

Ewww.

Really don't wanna have to vote oasis but just might.

That, or Boyz II Men.

I Fucked Up (jer.fairall), Friday, 16 March 2012 14:43 (thirteen years ago)

Oh wait, missed regulate.

I Fucked Up (jer.fairall), Friday, 16 March 2012 14:44 (thirteen years ago)

when i said no brainer i didn't mean vote for the band with no brains.

ledge, Friday, 16 March 2012 14:44 (thirteen years ago)

Bloody hell, this is a horrible chart. I don't actually like any of these, but I'd say the top three that I could just about stand to listen to would be '7 Seconds', 'Confide in Me' and 'Regulate'. Voting for the latter as there are times when it comes on that I do actively enjoy it instead of just not minding it.

emil.y, Friday, 16 March 2012 14:47 (thirteen years ago)

GUN - Word Up

^ this is the worst thing ever fyi

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Friday, 16 March 2012 14:50 (thirteen years ago)

Btw, is this "love is all around" a cover of the 60s thing? I remember Wet x3 existing, but not the single in question.

I Fucked Up (jer.fairall), Friday, 16 March 2012 14:52 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, it's the Troggs song

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Friday, 16 March 2012 14:54 (thirteen years ago)

Bleh.

I Fucked Up (jer.fairall), Friday, 16 March 2012 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

It was number one for a million years.

emil.y, Friday, 16 March 2012 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know where mike-t got 15 weeks from. It was definitely a million years.

emil.y, Friday, 16 March 2012 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

I like:

Kylie Minogue - Confide In Me
Warren G And Nate Dogg - Regulate
The Prodigy - No Good (Start The Dance)
Dawn Penn - You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)
Aswad - Shine

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Friday, 16 March 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

Don't think it ever made it over here (Canada), or at least I missed it.

I Fucked Up (jer.fairall), Friday, 16 March 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

That Man United song with Status Quo wasn't all that, but what can you expect really from a record with Peter Schmeichel, Dennis Irwin, Gary Pallister, Steve Bruce, Paul Ince, Mark Hughes and Roy Keane doing the vocals.

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Friday, 16 March 2012 15:10 (thirteen years ago)

Oh I forgot Kanchelskis, Giggs, Cantona, Paul Parker, Lee Sharpe and (blimey, was he still alive?) Bryan Robson. So actually I take it back, it's a miracle it wasn't any worse.

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Friday, 16 March 2012 15:16 (thirteen years ago)

Bought at the time:

The Prodigy - No Good (Start The Dance)
Stiltskin - Inside
Gloworm - Carry Me Home
Absolutely Fabulous - Absolutely Fabulous
Dawn Penn - You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)
Grid - Swamp Thing
Mariah Carey - Anytime You Need A Friend
Warren G And Nate Dogg - Regulate
Youssou N'Dour - 7 Seconds ft Neneh Cherry
Oasis - Live Forever
Blur - Parklife
Kylie Minogue - Confide In Me

mike t-diva, Friday, 16 March 2012 15:19 (thirteen years ago)

This was an amazing summer for me. If I close my eyes I can still see Stoitchkov and Hagi at USA 94.

'No Good Start The Dance' was way in front until we got to 'Regulate'. Will also rep for Dawn Penn, Youssou N'Dour, I really liked the 'Word Up' cover at the time but haven't heard it since. Loads of good ones in there. Swamp Thing!

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 16 March 2012 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

Tinman - Eighteen Strings

This was the 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' house record, right?

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 16 March 2012 15:23 (thirteen years ago)

DJ Miko - What's Up

Oh god is this what I think it is?

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 16 March 2012 15:24 (thirteen years ago)

Ha, I think it probably is. 4 Non Blondes cover right?

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Friday, 16 March 2012 15:26 (thirteen years ago)

REGULATORS...MOUNT UP!

Ward Fowler, Friday, 16 March 2012 15:29 (thirteen years ago)

I don't particularly like any of these tracks!

I don't even want to end up voting for my least favourite Blur song of that era simply because there's nothing less dreadful that I can spot.

Oh wait, I missed The Grid - Swamp Thing in my first read. Phew, I'll vote for that, then.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 16 March 2012 15:33 (thirteen years ago)

At least three absolute classics (Gloworm, Kylie and Corona) but it has to be Carry Me Home.

Une semaine de Bunty (ShariVari), Friday, 16 March 2012 15:36 (thirteen years ago)

"Live Forever".

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:43 (thirteen years ago)

Swamp Thing is the banjo one, yeah? That was pretty good. I liked the Prodigy one at the time. For me it's a toss up between Dawn Penn and Manchester United.

Let's Talk About Socks (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 16 March 2012 17:16 (thirteen years ago)

(In the summer of 94 I would probably have chosen Parklife, but I'd be happy never to hear that song again now)

Let's Talk About Socks (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 16 March 2012 17:17 (thirteen years ago)

The Prodigy - No Good (Start The Dance)
Big Mountain - Baby I Love Your Way
Gloworm - Carry Me Home
Warren G And Nate Dogg - Regulate
Red Dragon With Brian And Tony Gold - Compliments On Your Kiss
DJ Miko - What's Up
Boyz II Men - I'll Make Love To You
Kylie Minogue - Confide In Me
Corona - The Rhythm Of The Night

preliminary shortlist. a lot easier to thin down than the Bryan Adams one

Kony Montana: "Say hello to my invisible friend" (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 March 2012 17:18 (thirteen years ago)

so - a top 5 Prodge single, one of my favourite Kylie tracks, "Carry Me Home" and "Regulate". sheeit

Kony Montana: "Say hello to my invisible friend" (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 March 2012 17:19 (thirteen years ago)

oh and DJ Miko - so torn

Kony Montana: "Say hello to my invisible friend" (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 March 2012 17:20 (thirteen years ago)

ah fuck it have to vote Gloworm

Kony Montana: "Say hello to my invisible friend" (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 March 2012 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

loses marks for not being an hour long but

Kony Montana: "Say hello to my invisible friend" (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 March 2012 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

It's a good choice, I hadn't registered what that was when I skimmed the list. Voted Progidy instead.

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Friday, 16 March 2012 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

Progidy wtf?

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Friday, 16 March 2012 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

i say it like that all the time now

Kony Montana: "Say hello to my invisible friend" (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 March 2012 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

xpost: I re-played DJ Miko this afternoon. My love of Eurobosh covers is second to nobody's, but this one didn't actually hold up too well.

The Grid's "Swamp Thing" and Two Cowboys' Malcolm McLaren-sampling "Everybody Gonfi Gon" ... banjo-fied Hoedown House at its short-lived commercial peak, there. I still find charm in the latter's titular transcription error.

mike t-diva, Friday, 16 March 2012 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

Miko was more plodding than i remembered it, just relistened. Still like it.

Have never enjoyed any Hoedown House, so horrible.

Kony Montana: "Say hello to my invisible friend" (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 March 2012 17:37 (thirteen years ago)

Hoedown House's commercial peak was Rednex surely?

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Friday, 16 March 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

Just going through some of these on youtube. I have no memory of that 2 Unlimited song at all.

Let's Talk About Socks (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 16 March 2012 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

The Reel 2 Real one is good (though very similar to I Like To Move It)

Let's Talk About Socks (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 16 March 2012 18:22 (thirteen years ago)

Hahahahaha PJ and Duncan oh God

Doch! (seandalai), Friday, 16 March 2012 18:41 (thirteen years ago)

All amazing:

The Prodigy - No Good (Start The Dance)
Dawn Penn - You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)
Grid - Swamp Thing
Warren G And Nate Dogg - Regulate
Kylie Minogue - Confide In Me

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Friday, 16 March 2012 18:50 (thirteen years ago)

'No Good Start The Dance' was way in front until we got to 'Regulate'.

balls, Saturday, 17 March 2012 14:49 (thirteen years ago)

It'd be great if there were only votes for nate dogg

John Nestle Harding (loves laboured breathing), Saturday, 17 March 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

It's going to have to be Regulate really.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Saturday, 17 March 2012 15:07 (thirteen years ago)

Got slightly excited cz I though the Gloworm track was "I Lift My Cup" but it isn't.

Great:
The Prodigy - No Good (Start The Dance)
Dawn Penn - You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)
Grid - Swamp Thing
Warren G And Nate Dogg - Regulate

Pretty good:
Gloworm - Carry Me Home
Youssou N'Dour - 7 Seconds ft Neneh Cherry
Kylie Minogue - Confide In Me
Corona - The Rhythm Of The Night

Feel like I always vote for the Prodigy (and so does everyone else), and the 90s "No No No" now seems a bit pedestrian compared to the original, so it's looking like Swamp Thing, but this is a choice which needs a few more drinks to get properly into the 90s nostalgia zone.

instant coffee happening between us (a passing spacecadet), Saturday, 17 March 2012 16:17 (thirteen years ago)

I love the 90s No No No, the transition from the stabby intro to the skank is like slipping into a warm bath.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Saturday, 17 March 2012 17:10 (thirteen years ago)

Also Live Forever is the one Oasis song I have any time for.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Saturday, 17 March 2012 17:11 (thirteen years ago)

Can only really manage a top seven:

Warren G And Nate Dogg - Regulate
Kylie Minogue - Confide In Me
Oasis - Live Forever
The Prodigy - No Good (Start The Dance)
Youssou N'Dour - 7 Seconds ft Neneh Cherry
Corona - The Rhythm Of The Night
Dawn Penn - You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)

Much as I love Blur as a band, I think 'Parklife' is a terrible song.

Gavin, Leeds, Saturday, 17 March 2012 17:15 (thirteen years ago)

Schmiechel, Parker, Pallister
Irwin, Bruce, Sharpe & Ince
Hughes, McClair, Keane & Cantona
Robson KANCHELSKIS AND GIGGS

phuturephase, Sunday, 18 March 2012 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

That's one of the few videos for these songs that I could remember exactly what it was like (Regulate and the very predictable Come On You Reds video too)

Cannot believe I'm the first person to even mention this. It feels like a sort of high-point of mid-90s super-glossy drivetime pop, like Let Loose somehow managed to line everything up absolutely perfectly just this once. Also, drumstick twirling. All of the drumstick twirling.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 18 March 2012 23:35 (thirteen years ago)

god "7 seconds" was inescapable at the time

a MEEEEELLION voices

lex pretend, Monday, 19 March 2012 13:35 (thirteen years ago)

"regulate" fells unfair in this context cuz how could anything else stand a chance? like no "lol 90s i liked that at the time" fond memory can stand up next to "regulate"

lex pretend, Monday, 19 March 2012 13:36 (thirteen years ago)

*feels

lex pretend, Monday, 19 March 2012 13:36 (thirteen years ago)

i did like that Let Loose song at the time

red is hungry green is jawless (Noodle Vague), Monday, 19 March 2012 13:36 (thirteen years ago)

a lot of these aren't lol 90s for me tho - i don't really think like that anyway - they're still good tunes

red is hungry green is jawless (Noodle Vague), Monday, 19 March 2012 13:37 (thirteen years ago)

This was a toughie. Regulate, 7 Seconds, Parklife, Confide In Me and Live Forever all very strong singles, and a lot of the others weren't too bad either. Very few godawful ones; maybe a lot of meh "follow-up to big hit" ones.

Reckon Regulate's going to get more than enough love here (ditto for Live Forever in the UK) so I'm putting in a vote for Parklife because I suspect it (i.e. the song) never really crossed the Atlantic and it probably does need the vote.

Here he is with the classic "Poème Électronique." Good track (Marcello Carlin), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 18:38 (thirteen years ago)
