What if music didn't exist anymore...

...and you had to find a new hobby? What would you do? How would your world be changed?

There was a time (most of my 20s, really) when, if the music and records ceased to exist, I'd be left with absolutely nothing. The further I get into my 30s, though, the more I realize how many books, films, food, travels and other life experiences I've yet to enjoy. Thus, I've (only semi-consciously) downgraded music from 98% of my leisure-time activity to only, like, 70% or so. This means I'm beginning to feel slightly out of touch, but at the same time rediscovering my old favorites and acquiring new atuff at slower, a more leisurely pace.

I feel like I'm talking to a bunch of kindred spirits who can relate to a love-hate relationship toward one's obsessions. I'm interested in hearing your answers.

you might as well ask 'what if there was no oxygen' to me. if music hadnt been invented it would then be invented on the spot there and then because its such an intuitive, natural, emotional response and its basically IMPOSSIBLE for humans to not feel the need and want to make noise > sounds > music even if its just using the voice/mouth and no other instruments...music is the most essential of all artforms i say

unless you're deaf....

but then, maybe deaf people hear music in their heads.... And it may be nothing like what we experience.

mmmmm...intarrestin stuff. if you GO deaf ala Beethoven you already have an idea of what everything sounds like so you rely on written description, memory and matching things with what they look like for new stuff perhaps. If you were to be born deaf then thats just too fucked up to think about for me but fascinating

No music = Push, Nevada would be less irritating, I'd read more, and I'd be free of the compulsion to walk in rhythm.
