Not certain other than in October.
"And are there any key tracks missing?"
Well it doesn't have the tracks HP did for Turn-U-On (the sublabel Nico of No-U-Turn of jungle fame started), of which the most U&K that I've heard is "One You Need" - an absolutely swoonworthy vocal track that's up there with the Zed Bias remix of 2 Banks Of 4's "Hook & A Line".
Nor does it have all of the early Tempa tracks - "Let's Dance"/"When You Hold Me", "Triple 7", "Vigilante" etc. But it's as comprehensive as you could realistically wish for, and the really crucial Tempa tracks (ie. "Gorgon Sound" and "Fists Of Fury") are present. Since they've gotten better as they've gone along, I think leaving space for new tracks was fairly prudent. Tracks like "Pimp Flavours", "Classic Deluxe" and "Django's Revenge" cast long shadows over most of their earlier work. Apart from "One You Need" I can't think of a track the album should have gone out of its way to include.
Hey, did anyone check out the Junior Boys tracks that Hyperdub have up? I wrote about one on Skykicking - I'm surprised they haven't been mentioned at all. Fantastic stuff.

But I might be in the minority for thinking Horsepower were best when they sounded like a more spectral version of proper girly 2-step (leaving "One You Need" off the album was a crime!)

the idea i had of their sound from a few snippets was probably along these lines. and it was exciting. when i heard the album the 'rude' angle of cult kungfu/crime movie samples and dub smokiness didn't really coalesce right. i like 'fists of fury' but it's ;less bruce lee fists, more like fluorescent daggers that works with me. "more rock n roll" is making me think about 2-step t. raumschmiere now.....

also, he is SO wrong about them not using MCs with how staid their drum programming has gotten (bass sounds have gone to shit too).
sigh. in any event, i'll reserve judgment until i hear the album. the first one is still one of my 5-10 fave electronic dance lps ever.
― strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)
what's the point of Kano going "i fuck skets" or Footsie going "you don't wanna war with..." over Horsepower's beats? their sentiments bare no relation to each other.

haha sorry martin, i'll read more carefully next time. i thought benny himself had said that about the MC thing.

do you like horsepower? grime MCs? Metalheadz 96?
― martin (martin), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)
did anything post-in fine style ever come close to the majesty of "fat larry's skank"?
should i NOT buy dubstep allstars volumes 1+2? i sort of like the cover art, and also the DJs names. "hatcha". "youngsta". sounds fun.
still allergic to this stuff, jess?

Because like everyone says, they're boring. Vol 2 is a bit better but you should hear "Sholay", that's good.
But what ambrose said.
― phantasy bear (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:59 (twenty years ago)
BUT
nothing horsepower did afterwards was very interesting/good. there were a few tracks on to the rescue that were good, but it was a lot more leaden/less frisky/less feminine. (plus that 12 minute long tribal breaks thing, wtf?! heh, actually you'd probably love that vahid...it reminds me of the photek track from headz ii.)
i am much more fond of 2005-2006 dubstep than 2003-2004 dubstep. things have gotten much beefier/heavier in the last 18 months or so.

yeah, and grime 2 >>>> grime 1!!!
so i was wondering, maybe dj youngsta's set is worth picking up?
sad to hear about dj hatcha's set being no good. =( i really liked the cover art.

I can't remember the last time I listened to either one. :(
I am excited about the prospect of a Skream album this summer (although I hope that there will be MCs on it somewhere.)

whose idea was it to slow the tempo to almost nil? i thought the label was called "tempa"??
― vahid (vahid), Thursday, 26 January 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)
actually, this stuff makes me think of an imaginary project where the cream of nu skool breaks producers (rennie pilgrim, tipper, freq nasty, adam freeland, rotters club) are brought in to remix mo'wax's NEW THING dancehall rhythm comp.
except this is not a dream, it's a dystopian nightmare and the results are TERRIBLE!!
