GTA (whichever one had all the 80s songs)

Katamari Damacy

The CONELRAD mod for Fallout (I haven't actually played the game, but I know what songs are on it, and they are all awesome).

Katamari Damacy

worst: PES 2010

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 05:51 (thirteen years ago)

every PES is the worst

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 09:07 (thirteen years ago)

by the way whomever was behind the GITS soundtrack really knew his shit.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 10:16 (thirteen years ago)

i'm not sure which tony hawk's pro skater soundtrack to choose. 2? 3?

katamari damacy's is fantastic.

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

ditto for GTA: Vice City. that one was incredible. it was agazonizing to me listening to the GTA4 soundtrack in which i had to give my condolences to the composers for finding the epitome of 00s music while still happening to be in that decade. makes me dread what GTA5 will offer.

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

All of the Katamari soundtracks are amazing. I genuinely love that stuff a lot.

Soggy Cheeseburgers (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

My runners up would be Um Jammer Lammy and Bust a Groove.

donkey kong country 2 ost >>>>> 1, although aquatic ambience is a classic

abcfsk, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 18:54 (thirteen years ago)

I assumed this question was about soundtracks made up of songs cos yeah DKC, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound etc.

Number None, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

^yeah, same. i'd have much more if we were thinking original works.

fallout 1 & 2 soundtracks were 70% of the atmosphere, altho evidence posits that the composer blatantly ripped a lot of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works 2

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 19:03 (thirteen years ago)

earthbound soundtrack is really on another level

original bgm, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah the first Katamari game pretty much owns all in this regard. The other ones are good too but that first soundtrack was just brilliant all the way through.

As far as soundtracks made up of existing tunes, I'll always have a soft spot for Tony Hawk 3 (though I'm guessing I'd hate it now!)

frogbs, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 19:05 (thirteen years ago)

Oh yeah, Rez definitely deserves a mention here

frogbs, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

sometimes the OG answer is the right answer: Super Mario Brothers

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

yeah it's amazing that one NES game could have three tunes that are instantly recognizable throughout the entire world after the first few notes

all the Mario games have had great music ("Dire Dire Docks" always put me in such a strange mood), but I really love how Galaxy switches things up depending on what you're doing in the level

frogbs, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 19:10 (thirteen years ago)

yeah people are mostly otm on here

donkey kong country 2
earthbound
final fantasy 3/6
chrono trigger

the SNES sound chip was really just the sweet spot for rewarding creative sound design and good composition while avoiding the pitfalls of having access to recorded audio. those squaresoft RPG soundtrack tunes rarely had more than 4 or so instruments playing at once but they sounded as expansive as a modern orchestral soundtrack regardless

very honorable mention to sonic 3/sonic and knuckles which are just so far above other genesis games in music quality

ciderpress, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 19:46 (thirteen years ago)

oh and for actual recent stuff with real recorded soundtrack: Machinarium

ciderpress, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

Plok! had some of the richest-sounding and probably the longest individual music tracks of any SNES game. Too bad the game itself is so short — probably due to the sheer amount of space required for the BGM.

tanuki, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

disagree w/r/t SNES -- the music generally had a very MIDI-feel (maybe the music was originally in MIDI before encoding in SNES format?)
best platform was the original gameboy.

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 20:30 (thirteen years ago)

i feel like i don't even have to post this but it's still mega man 2

40oz of tears (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

silent hill 2, gabriel knight 1, hero's quest (quest for glory)

adam, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 20:37 (thirteen years ago)

The title theme from Robocop always struck me as astonishingly good. I think it may be the only thing anyone remembers from it anymore. Also it was adapted in that video where Dilbert shoots up his office.

frogbs, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

maybe it's nostalgia-haze but these youtube gameboy clips don't sound as good as I remember gameboy being. Are they recorded from real gameboys or emulators?

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

that's pretty great.

was ocean a subsidiary of sunsoft setup so they could release more games a la konami and 'ultra games'? I vaguely remember something like this...

in any case, sunsoft's nes stuff was up there with capcom and konami:

well, I read the ocean wiki (duh) and I'm wrong

no rules here but that ghost in the shell soundtrack was all commissioned for the game, iirc
