The Streets: One-off Or Major Player?

While he didn't pick up the best album at last night's Mercury Awards ceremony in London, The Streets has made quite a ripple with his debut album. Do you think this guy is going to be around for sometime, or will he fade away into the ether?

Derek Dalek (Derek Dalek), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, between the hives, the vines and the strokes, can we even tell these people apart? Huh? HUH? HUUHHH!?

Lord Custos Alpha (Lord Custos Alpha), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

So who did win?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I believe The Streets falls under a different genre of music to The Hives et al. I believe The Streets would be categorized as "Urban", whatever that means.

I do agree though that modern "Rock" music has boiled down to either nu-metal angsty "fast then really loud, like, you know, Nirvana" (Korn, System of a Down) or shouty, petulant "I'm the new Iggy and here are my Stooges" (Any of the bands you mentioned in your initial post)

Derek Dalek (Derek Dalek), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello Mr Noodles,

Miss Dynamite won the Mercury Prize.

Derek Dalek (Derek Dalek), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Holy shit, you called The Streets "urban"??? Get your head outta your ass - they're UK Garage! For fuck's sake, do you write for Pitchfork or something? Moron.

ILM Guy, Wednesday, 18 September 2002 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm ILM Guy,

First off, you need to get some "Anger Management" as part of your daily diet as well as working on your mental retention skills.

I heard on the radio today that the category that the Streets fell into for the Mercury Awards was titled "Urban"...also, if you read my post completely you would have noticed that I stated "whatever that means" in relation to the "Urban" categorization.

Derek Dalek (Derek Dalek), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

UK garage = one of few genres that I actually do see some point in calling "urban"

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, because suburban garage = head and the hares.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Urban Garage? Does that mean they're a Sonics tribute band??

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

This last exchange was pretty amusing, though I'll probably sound like a snob for saying so.

Dare, Wednesday, 18 September 2002 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

The Streets is urban, not Urban. If that makes any sense.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Move along now people, this was all a Custos "joke", nothing to see here.

Is it just me, or does this post stink of a disgruntled Pitchfucker?

Whoops!

Bit of a my subconcious sneeking in there...

wl (wl), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Too bad this is descending into stoopidity, because it's a good question. I think it's a fucking amazing album--my favorite of the year if Boom Selection_Issue 01 doesn't count, which it probably doesn't/shouldn't really--but it's such a brilliant flash and so sui generis that I wonder if he can do it again, even a little bit. He's obviously talented as hell, and the concept is so perfectly realized, but how many records can he get out of that concept? See also: Cypress Hill, Portishead, Le Tigre (whose followups, in fairness, are better than C.H.'s or P-head's, but still, you get my drift).

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 19 September 2002 01:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I expect he'll follow up with exactly the same album, which I'll be happy with as long as he does it soon (unlike Portishead). Shit, he's my age, we can afford to wait a few years before the inevitable "development" follows the inevitable backlash.

B:Rad (Brad), Thursday, 19 September 2002 02:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't believe Miss Dynamite won - all the way through it seemed like a two-horse race between Roots Manuva (who got my vote) and The Streets, but according to clickmusicbiz.com,

"The judges we spoke to intimated [Miss Dynamite] wasn't a clear winner by any means, rather more a compromise, with Doves, Streets and Joanna MacGregor close by."

Doves? Fuckin' Doves? Now there's one band I just don't get.

Awards aside, Mike Skinner's very good indeed, Original Pirate Material is fantastic and I bet he's still amazed it made it out of his bedroom. However, I wouldn't be surprised if it's all he's gonna do that's ever gonna matter - shame.

It all depends on a. his continued lyrical ingenuity and b. whether or not the big nasty music industry pushes him into a box he doesn't fit...

He's heowge here in Australia, mainly due to Aussies' penchant for a bit o' the owd cockernee action, and also cos of a *horrible* house remix of "Weak Become Heroes" (see point b. above).

ps his website rocks too - www.the-streets.co.uk

I'm gonna have a little dance now, seeya later!

Someone has made an Ian Dury comparison to Skinner already, yes? Even if he's from the Midlands or wherever...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 September 2002 05:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently he's already written/recorded half the follow-up.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 19 September 2002 05:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Speaking of Ian Dury, who is Baxter Dury? Son of, perhaps?

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 19 September 2002 06:34 (twenty-three years ago)

There's enough actually well written songs on Original Pirate Material that its certainly possible he could do something that won't be just a pale re-tread of the concept. I hope so as OPM is really good.

tigerclawskank, Thursday, 19 September 2002 06:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Baxter is Ian's son. I've heard one track from his album - he cannot sing.

zebedee, Thursday, 19 September 2002 07:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I dont see why even a xeroxed follow-up shouldnt be as good - I think the style he's hit on is strong enough to support it, and I doubt he's likely to run out of material as long as he keeps on going to the pub.

This ties in a bit with that thread Nitsuh started - why do we expect bands/artists we see as 'original' to then be 'original' in a different way instead of exploring the areas they've already opened up?

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 September 2002 09:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not sure. it took me ages before i bought 'opm' as i was thinking "i love 'has it come to this?', not so keen on 'let's push things forward', don't no if i could put up with him nattering over an entire album". a mate had it, i listened to it, liked it, got it. but still, two whole albums of it, maybe not for me. he's made a statement, not sure what else there is for him to say.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 19 September 2002 10:15 (twenty-three years ago)

or, to put it more succinctly: i know a lot of hip-hop artists just go on-and-on about girls, money, cris, weed, but at least they have a flow.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 19 September 2002 10:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, as he's currently playing with a live band, he's likely to incorporate some of that into his next record. A development I usually dread... Apparently, he's just done his first remix, for UK hip-hopper Blak Twang. I haven't heard that yet. Anyone?

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 19 September 2002 10:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Stepping off to the side for a minute, I think Mike Skinner as The Streets is essentially a one-off... I'm not sure if the whole concept would carry over onto a second album without being a) a pointless and probably substandard retreat of OPM, or b) a shinily produced and probably less compelling version of same.

What he could do next is change the concept, change the name, change the persona, and address wholly different issues, possibly in a similar way. It'd be different, but potentially interesting...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 September 2002 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Saying oh The Streets shouldnt do a second album is like saying stand-up comedians should only ever do one set's worth of material surely??

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 September 2002 10:48 (twenty-three years ago)

WHAT WERE WE THINKING!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 10:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I think there's heaps of lifespan outside the album. I've found listening to the b-sides ("All Got Our Runnins", "Give Me My Lighter Back") just as enjoyable as listening to the album - almost moreso, because freed from the context of the album they allow you to imagine what he might do next, and I think he's really only skimmed the surface of his persona.

Also, Skinner is producing the second album himself, so I doubt it'll be shinier. It can imagine it being more experimental (more bassline solos please!). I'd be interested to hear the Black Twang remix (especially if it's of "Tricksta"!) because, as I think he proved on the Roll Deep Mix of Let's Push Things Forward, he's just as adept a garage/hip hop producer as he is an MC.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't today "Talk Like Original Pirate Material Day"?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:30 (twenty-three years ago)

That Blak Twang remix, by the way, is from Kik Off album highlight So Rotton, release date October 14.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and you can listen to 84 seconds of it here.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer Hand does a great Mike Skinner impression--well, I've never heard MS but TH doing MS is very amusing!

so a two-off, then

omar little, Thursday, 24 September 2009 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

did anyone actually listen to that fourth album in the end? what was it like? someone or other told me there's a wob-step version of "blinded by the lights" out now.

major one off. needs to bow out gracefully now, do the occasional show where he plays the first album in full, produce some half decent rappers like he shouldve done years back, or judging from his recent beats, maybe not do that and just sign them to his label (or has that closed now?) and never record again, only doing the occasional puffy-like background murmuring or intro-ing records. maybe he should just become a radio dj. or become a tv presenter. he should have done a series on geezers years back. mitchell brothers need to be barred from ever recording.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 24 September 2009 16:33 (sixteen years ago)

Streets Score came on random the other day and reminded me why I liked Skinner. I quit The Streets after album 3 but i've make an incredible playlist from those 3 + the singles + mixes. Who cares what else he does, he's made his contribution.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

I still listen to the first three albums pretty regularly, but "Everything Is Borrowed" feels like he slaved too long over some ideas that weren't too
great to begin with - why go to the trouble of recording a full orchestra if you're just going to truncate, quantize, and bit-crush it 'til it sounds like
some random loop you got from a sample CD? The b-side tracks that he issued on his earlier singles (I'm thinking specifically of tunes like "Give Me My Lighter Back"
and "Deluded In My Mind") are actually much stronger songs.

Tantrum The Cat, Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:25 (sixteen years ago)

I'm always pleased when a track from the first album comes up on shuffle. The second album is enjoyable too, but the flow is too self-concious so comes out a bit stilted. In contrast, there's a disarming intimacy to OPM.

Yeah I was hoping the quality of music inside also calls back to OPM. Hated the last one so much that Skinner needs to do a lot to get back into my good graces.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 3 December 2010 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

THe last one is garbage. The first two are all-time classics, especially OPM.
