late cohen

dude improved as a lyricist, somehow

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Monday, 26 March 2012 17:20 (thirteen years ago)

Late. Weird, eclectic, and for all the tacky production his work still had an edge to it.

A. Begrand, Monday, 26 March 2012 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

I love Recent Songs & Various Positions a lot but Songs of Love and Hate reigns supreme, those early songs are canon

Jesus alfred is there an inferior 80s era of a classic 60s artist that you DON'T prefer?

the penultimate prophets (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 29 March 2012 00:17 (thirteen years ago)

"prefer"

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 29 March 2012 00:20 (thirteen years ago)

late cohen

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 29 March 2012 00:24 (thirteen years ago)

Lots of sixties artists had terrible decades: Neil Young, Caetano Veloso for most of it, Clapton, CSN, Joni Mitchell, Dionne Warwick to name a few.

But McCartney and Aretha weren't any more uneven than usual. Van Morrison only released a couple of real embarrassments in a decade of remarkable consistency ("boring" too). Marvin Gaye stood on the cusp of making his eighties period as vital as the last decade (relisten to In Our Lifetime and Midnight Love). Fleetwood Mac's two releases are much more than solid. John Forgerty was a draw. Lou Reed and the Stones I've told you about.

It's not a matter of preference. When you get to a certain age and you're any good, craftsmanship is hard to abjure.

it's true. mccartney recorded one good song post-beatles and the 80s did not change that.

yes, but when you get to a certain age and you've made maccabucks it gets harder to put in the work. or maybe you just need the fear of john lennon's acid tongue to goad you to greatness.

Voted early Cohen because that's when he was a serious, brow-furrowed poet.

late cohen contains early cohen, so there you 15 people

fka snush (remy bean), Friday, 30 March 2012 00:18 (thirteen years ago)

i always assumed early cohen was consensus, then one day i realized there were people whod never even heard it

lag∞n, Friday, 30 March 2012 01:35 (thirteen years ago)

that was close. had i voted for late cohen it would have been a tie! actually i never really liked cohen in the first place. there was something histrionic about him. he was showing off. and i still don't really like him. making world tours where tickets cost from 50 bucks upwards. where you can see an old man sprechsinging at a distance of a 100 yards. you can also look at a screen if you wish. what kind of pisses me off the most it that he was so naive and stupid to let himself be ripped off by his manager that he has to do all these tours now to pay his bills and stuff. why the fuck should i pay for this man's idiocy? that going to a concert of his gives me the feeling of being even more stupid than this guy. end of rant.

alex in mainhattan, Friday, 30 March 2012 22:11 (thirteen years ago)

...pisses me off the most is that he was so naive...

alex in mainhattan, Friday, 30 March 2012 22:13 (thirteen years ago)

eh artists are not accountants, they can't be expected to keep track of their own money

besides it's not like anyone's forcing you to go to one of his shows

my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Friday, 30 March 2012 23:24 (thirteen years ago)

plus the idea that Cohen is "showing off" is one of the most wtf things I've ever read on ILM, there has never been a more modest and unassuming performer

my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Friday, 30 March 2012 23:26 (thirteen years ago)

i think all poets manipulate their feelings, and therefore are narcissists and "showing off" - it's what they do

zhalgiris, Saturday, 31 March 2012 04:11 (thirteen years ago)

i always found that his voice did not seem natural, his lyrics too seemed quite forced. in any case it worked for him, he sold lots of records and had lots of success with women. whatever, his music has never really convinced me.
