surprisingly, i'm not sick of any of these singles despite the overexposure they have all received. i want to vote for "The Walk" but something is telling me to vote for "Just One Kiss."

head explodes, will vote later.

Bee OK, Thursday, 29 March 2012 02:16 (thirteen years ago)

sometimes I think this is the best thing the Cure's released.

Alfred OTM, this is my favorite Cure release.

Lovecats wasn't originally on this was it - the pre-CD version was 6 tracks, right?

tempestuous alaskan nites! (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 29 March 2012 05:02 (thirteen years ago)

nope, this always had eight tracks with the "Lovecats" single included.

Bee OK, Thursday, 29 March 2012 05:05 (thirteen years ago)

oh wait I'm thinking of The Walk EP

yeah I guess this thing's ok if you slept on the Walk EP & the Lovecats 12"

to me this'd be between "the walk" & "let's go to bed" & "the lovecats" anyway - I think as a song "lovecats" is the best but the sentimental factor's high on those other 2

"Speak My Language" along with "Mr Pink Eyes" were the B-sides from the "Lovecats" single. "Mr Pink Eyes" is the only song from their singles, around this time, not included on this compilation.

Bee OK, Thursday, 29 March 2012 05:10 (thirteen years ago)

For me it was between 'Just One Kiss' (love the guitars on it) and 'Lament' (also love the guitars on it). I went with 'Lament', because I think it's an underappreciated gem in the Cure catalogue.

as a big soppy goth, I can only vote for "Lament"

love all these songs tho

But went with Speak My Language 'cos "nonsense nonsense nonsense mumble SPEAK MY LANGUAGE" is a great chorus.

pretty sure a lot of ilxors had legitimate naptime when these records came out

voting "The Lovecats"

da croupier, Thursday, 29 March 2012 13:48 (thirteen years ago)

I was past the nap stage but not quite at the "darkness is my only friend" stage

"Lament" is soooo good. But I love the kiss alcoholic and slow in "The Upstairs Room."

I always loved the way that Boris Williams actually made an attempt to play the drum machine parts whenever these songs were played live. The version of 'The Walk' on The Cure In Orange in particular is incredible.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 29 March 2012 16:19 (thirteen years ago)

Think I am gonna give my vote to THE DREAM just because it deserves it.

True! I have this on VHS somewhere. lol.

Oh man, I can't decide. No wait, I can.

The Walk.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Thursday, 29 March 2012 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

i don't think i ever bought this on CD. i had a cassette copy of it but never on CD.

i can listen to it remastered however. all the singles are on the Greatest Hits album and b-sides are on Join the Dots. looking forward to listening to this.

Let's Go to Bed hands down for me

broom air, Friday, 30 March 2012 17:51 (thirteen years ago)

For a collection of a-sides and b-sides, this works surprisingly well as an album, and is in fact one of my favourite Cure albums.

Gotta vote for "Let's Go To Bed", which is the best thing they ever did, but I really, really love "The Lovecats" too, and songs like "Just One Kiss" and "Speak Our Language" are also pretty good.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 30 March 2012 17:53 (thirteen years ago)

so i decided to go about this poll a little different. i can't really pick between these singles because it like picking your favorite child, it is just simply too hard.

so this is between "The Dream," "Just One Kiss," "The Upstairs Room," "Speak My Language" and "Lament." i feel totally justified with my my gut check for "Just One Kiss" such a great pop song that you wonder how it is just a b-side. but i was totally blow away on how brilliant of a song "The Upstairs Room" actually is. i has been such a long time since i have heard that and it was just oozing the goodness all over the place.

There's a strong argument to be made that this, Pornography and The Glove represent Robert Smith's creative peak.

THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Sunday, 1 April 2012 14:58 (thirteen years ago)

Include The Top and THOTD and I'd make it.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 1 April 2012 14:59 (thirteen years ago)

let's go to bed is my favorite of this batch.

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Monday, 2 April 2012 04:23 (thirteen years ago)

because of a lot of overexposure when i was 15 or so, i like a lot of the b-sides better than the a-sides at this point. "the dream" is wonderfully abstract pop, in that none of the individual elements would seem to be a part of what is actually a pretty stellar pop song. "just one kiss" and "the upstairs room" both could have been singles, but that's just how strong this period was, i suppose. "lament" is ridiculously beautiful, and really shows they could still be quite dark even though they'd gone pop. it's probably the best-written and produced/performed song of the bunch in many ways.

it's a complete shame they didn't do this one during their reissue campaign. the 12-inch versions of "let's go to bed" and "just one kiss," even if they are just kinda an instrumental tacked onto the front of the regular version, would have been nice additions, and it could have come out as a single disc, unless there are ridiculously rudimentary demos out there.

if i had to push a cure album onto someone, it would probably be this one. it's more successful than the top (which i really do love, but mostly because of how fucked up it is, and "birdmad girl" is my jam,) as a transitional album, it shows them at a creative peak without being overly long, and it isn't quite so slick as later creative peaks.

.. and I won't vote if you don't...

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 01:36 (thirteen years ago)

so i messed up and never voted in this thing...i thought i had one more day to vote.

anyways add one vote to "The Upstairs Room."
