Any tips? I have listened to Hejira and other mid-'70s Joni albums more times than I can count and could use some recommendations for similar music.

John Martyn has a large jazz influence.solid air his most famous song is based on a theme he nicked from Pharaoh Sanders' Astral Travelling.
There's 3 great lps in a row from him around the time, Bless The Weather, Inside Out and Solid Air.

Terry Reid's River is really nice in a similar way.

Might bung in Roberta Flack's First Take though that's more jazz than rock.
Cover's looking at me from the other side of the room.

Jaco Pastorius' "Word of Mouth" has a similar tone, careening and chaotic, and then the final song "John and Mary" is phenomenally beautiful. Jaco played bass on Hejira.
Annette Peacock - "The Perfect Release" is a little bit sillier and further out than Hejira, but definitely worth a listen.
John Martyn - "One World" in addition to those mentioned above by Stevolende.
