...and just to wind her up: Jarvis Cocker. Yes, really. I mean, have you *heard* "Street Lites"?

I'll add that lovely man from Kings Of Convenience - Erland is it? - and Jimmy Page. Night night.

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 19 September 2002 07:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, I know it's obvious, but a Marvin Gaye/Al Green/Barry White tie. Actually, no: Marvin Gaye. Specifically and definitively. Keep getting it on: the bit where he goes 'Let me tell you about Jesus/coming to tell the people/to Get it on: Yes, Lord!

jon (jon), Thursday, 19 September 2002 09:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, fuck OFF!!

I slept in coz we went to SOUTHEND last night.

Purely for sound alone (coz otherwise clearly this list would begin and end with Bobby G)

I think the sexiest male vocal ever laid to tape is probably Kurt Ralske from UVS on "Mercy Seat". Uuuuuhhhhh...

Also the way that Jim Reid whines on the first Mary Chain album, as well. Gah! "I'll be your plastic toy..." Sex on a stick!

I freaking HATE crooners and Barry White style soul singers. Not sexy at all. I like a boy who whines and shrieks and makes actual sex noises. Erm, Brett Anderson, I'm looking at you.

kate, Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Marc Almond. Snoop Doggy Dogg.

Clarence Carter!!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:25 (twenty-three years ago)

no wonder I always turn people off when I sing!

jon (jon), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:26 (twenty-three years ago)

alan vega, definitely.
i don't know how can anyone find him scary, when he's pure unprejudiced sex on the streets.

joan vich (joan vich), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:28 (twenty-three years ago)

marc almond and bryan ferry.

cecilia, Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Barry White (even that Snake song) or Lyle Lovitt.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Joe Williams
Charles Brown
Leonard Cohen

christoff (christoff), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Fabian, especially on "Turn Me Loose". Billy Joe from Green Day. Jack White from the White Stripes. Slick, smooth singers are great, but to me they're not sexy.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheo Feliciano.

(I think he should at least be nominated, and no one else was going to do it.)

DeRayMi, Thursday, 19 September 2002 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Mitch Ryder. Nelly. Joe South.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 19 September 2002 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Taylor Savvy?

nick.K (nick.K), Thursday, 19 September 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Me!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 September 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Scott Walker singing 'Duchess'. Prince on 'Gett off'. Roy Orbison on 'Pretty Woman'.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 19 September 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Duchess - nice one. The other two are full of sex but too pervy. They make me want to wank, not cop off. Surely women (or gay men) pick this up?

jon (jon), Thursday, 19 September 2002 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also think that whispery, breathy, vulnerable vocals are very sexy, a la folks like Steve Kilbey and Jay Ferguson (Sloan, not Thunder Island)

kate, Thursday, 19 September 2002 15:10 (twenty-three years ago)

phew! women still not (quite) other species. Butler Rev? Quieter Tim Buckley? Lambchop, even?

The voices I listed earlier - Marvin/Al/Bazza make me want a woman - these ones make me wonder if actually I want a man.

So in that sense, these are the sexiest ones.

jon (jon), Thursday, 19 September 2002 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I find it odd that this thread has died so much more quickly than the "not sexy" male vocalists thread.

Is it easier to criticise than to praise? Or just hard for men to view other men as sexy? (subtext: why have the ladeez of ILM not posted to this thread?)

I'm a gay man, and personally I can't hear Mr. Walker singing this to any woman. Sure it's beautifully sung, but I think it's also narcissistically sung, if that makes any sense. I'm a big Scott Walker fan, but he always sounds self-involved to me. Prince is narcissistic as well, but he sonds much more involved with the outside world.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Thom Yorke singing "High & Dry" -yum.
I'll have to think about other ones, though.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Chilly Gonzales! How could I forget?

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:17 (twenty-three years ago)

What about moments of startling uninhibition that make you feel like you're practically watching someone masturbating? Some votes: Elvis on "One-Sided Love Affair," the live version of "Rainbow '65" by Gene Chandler, or anything from the first Pixies session.

Hooper, Friday, 20 September 2002 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

David Sylvian, mid-aged Peter Gabriel, Lou Barlow, Dave Gahan.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Jeff Buckley.

My name is Kenny, Friday, 20 September 2002 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Al Green, no contest. As another straight male friend put it, "The first time I heard him, I wanted to fuck him." Amen.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 20 September 2002 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

John Martyn's languid, lazy drawl, especially on Solid Air, gets me thinkin' dirty stuff.

Saskia, Saturday, 21 September 2002 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

buddy holly on "not fade away" = instant wet-on.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 22 September 2002 03:38 (twenty-three years ago)

damo suzuki- you cannot disagree.

mike (ro)bott, Sunday, 22 September 2002 03:56 (twenty-three years ago)

DANIEL BEDINGFIELD

simon trife (simon_tr), Sunday, 22 September 2002 04:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot Grant Lee Phillips.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 22 September 2002 05:49 (twenty-three years ago)

The previous votes for Marc Almond are of course to be treasured. But I do like Kate's nomination for Kurt Ralske, I wish I could sing that way (ie, like Marc Bolan ;-)).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 September 2002 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

the guy from jack

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 22 September 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)
