Are these guys signed to a stateside label or am I going to have to shell out for the import. Also: worth it?

TMFTML (TMFTML), Thursday, 19 September 2002 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

download it first
don't believe the hype!

jj, Thursday, 19 September 2002 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 19 September 2002 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought it when it came out on Gigolo over a year ago. I don't play it at all now. It wore off very very quickly.

Steal it.

Microkomputer (Microkomputer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Just buy "Emerge".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Dom's closest. I'd go a few steps beyond that, actually: you'll find, depending on taste, 2-5 great tracks on the record, with the rest ranging from serviceable to a bit of a bore. So, you know, middling.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Middling, I mean, in that worth-buying middling way, though not at import prices.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with nabisco. Moreover, you can probably find those 2-5 on good v/a compilations.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

but what do they sound like?

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone care to recommend a comp?

TMFTML (TMFTML), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think emerge is the ONLY good tune...(but its true that you shouldn't believe the hype) if you download 'emerge' AND 'the 15th' then you're set

geeg, Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

greg has it right. the most overrated band ever. I can't believe ministry of sound signed them for £2 million, released the LP and sold 200 copies in the first week. genius.
seriously though. spend a little bit of time downloading the above mentioned tracks (while you're at it make sure and get your hands on the original wire version of the 15th) and then spend your time downloading stuff by adult. daniel wang, and a bunch of the original 80s folks... chris and cosey, the normal, patrick cowley, divine, human league etc...
there's a pretty decent comp called disco nouveaux which you can probably pick up easily.

simon 803 (simon 803), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:05 (twenty-three years ago)

International Deejay Gigolos compilation Vol. 5 is a winner - it's got Emerge, Tiga's Sunglasses At Night and loads of other genuinely vee good electro stuff, and it's cheap if yr lucky.

I'm told the F/S album blows hard - can't help but recommend Luke Slater's astounding Alright On Top album again - the first proper nu-electro-pop "album" that's actually come up with the goods (although he made it by accident - nothing to do with any horrid electroclash bandwagon-jumping, and he'd kill yer for suggesting otherwise...)

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

is memoryboy working on an album? their/his??? song on the electroclash comp was fantastic.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Luke Slater's album isn't nu-electro in the same way as Fischerspooner etc, I mean everyone slates nu-electro cos "it just fuckin sounds like depeche mode" but it's the likes of Slater that are "guilty" of that, whether it's a bad thing by default is another argument. Fischerspooner's album is worth a listen.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 21 September 2002 10:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i prefered slater when he was on djax

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 21 September 2002 10:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait till you hear Megacolon. That's the best.

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 21 September 2002 10:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Jacques Lu Cont, remix of Silver Screen Shower Scene, that's the best. If his work with Madonna is anything as good as this then Madonna's new album might be "ok".

Slater's last mix album was pretty decent, except didn't it have some demented remix of La La Land on it?

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 21 September 2002 11:25 (twenty-three years ago)

(ps gareth did you get my mail during the week?)

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 21 September 2002 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

IMPORTANT QUESTION: why does everyone honestly believe they signed for two million pounds? Spooner said that in an interview as a joke, and it's a testament to something that everyone believed it, although I'm still trying to figure out what that "something" is. It only makes me like them more that he can fire off some patently ridiculous number like that and then everyone takes it as a stick to beat them with.

(What else do you think is going on in the alternate music universe where Jack and Meg white are brother and sister, Fischerspooner get signed for two million pounds, and Aphex Twin writes all of his songs in his sleep despite never sleeping?)

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 21 September 2002 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha -- is that the same universe where Jack and Meg turned down a MILLION DOLLARS to do a Gap ad? This tangent deserves its own thread..

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 21 September 2002 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

ps gareth did you get my mail during the week?)

don't think so, there was one, just let me see when...unless you mean the one on monday about fabric and your article? (which i've read through once, but haven't had a chance to read properly yet - extremely busy and mental week!!!) but if you sent one later than that, then no, i'm pretty dubious about my email at the moment after those ones from Anna and L just never arrived.

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 21 September 2002 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

nabisco, what you're talking about is what momus described in the last fischerspooner thread as something like fischerspooner consciously generating their own infamy. the us release (haven't seen any other) is covered with fawning quotes in giant type, like a newspaper movie or theatre ad.

boxcubed (boxcubed), Saturday, 21 September 2002 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

ten years pass...

These guys put out songs a couple of years ago??

For some reason I was thinking about them the other day. Nothing specific, just that they seemed so HUGE and ARTY and SMART back in the day, and I saw them live and they were really good but in 2013 they seem totally IRRELEVANT. I can't even remember what any of their songs sound like.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 11 March 2013 11:39 (twelve years ago)

"Emerge" is a GREAT song.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 03:26 (twelve years ago)

10 years pass...

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 03:29 (twelve years ago)

Emerge sounds just as good now as it does then. I still really love the second album too especially A Kick In The Teeth. I actually bought the third album but it was really weak and I ended up selling it. He made a solo album a couple of years ago but I didn't bother checking it out.

"emerge" still bangs, this is always how it was gonna end up, one day there'll be an electroclash revival, all in all i am very glad to have come of age in the tiny window for an electroclash generation to exist

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 13:27 (twelve years ago)

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 13:31 (twelve years ago)

the cover of wire is pretty good too.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 14:10 (twelve years ago)

cover version i mean, rather than art.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 14:10 (twelve years ago)

Know what was the most amazing thing ever? The Thin White Duke remix of "Just Let Go".

Tim F, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 14:13 (twelve years ago)

it really was

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 14:16 (twelve years ago)

xpost that was good, alright. There was a good Tiefschwarz one of Kick In The Teeth too.

I thought their remix of Kylie was good at the time but it hasn't aged well. There was a cool TOTP with her performing it, I remember.

Here it is, actually:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRE53QSdgY8

The chorus is still pretty amazing.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 14:17 (twelve years ago)

actually and the final buildup too still sort of bangs. sounds like proto-gaga, but better.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 14:18 (twelve years ago)

LOVED that at the time.
