An Artforum in its own right?

Which art magazine is as good as/better than Artforum? Which musician turned critic or critic turned musician is as critically adept and verbally obtuse as DJ Spooky/Paul Miller? Oh--that one's too easy--Momus to thread...

Is it worthwhile having a publication for art? When I say art, I mean serious art that is independent from everything covered in "Entertainment Weekly" and publications of that ilk?

Never heard of Artforum, but then again, I've never sat at a coveted "window seat" at Starbuck's reading Camus either.

Uh, ask Jackson Pollack.

I like Artforum, although mainly for the non-art coverage (thank god they got people other than Marcus to do the real life top ten). I read it mainly for the same reasons people read fashion mags: for the pictures and for the ads.

I suppose Modern Painters is at least as good as ArtForum.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

do people really read art mags (i mean, aside for the reasons that james does)?

I used to read Artforum as a sort of test--to see if I could understand the dense critical jargon. Now, I like to browse through it--but I prefer Japanese art magazines (surprise!) . There is also Bookforum...

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Frieze, a UK artmag featuring frequent contributions from Michael 'England Is Mine' Bracewell. They had a rather good Folk issue recently with stuff by Bob Stanley and others about 'The Wicker Man' and stuff like that.

One of my big ambitions in life is *not* to write like DJ Spooky. Actually, I rather like Jerry Saltz's art column for the Village Voice.

B-but Momus, I posted one of Jerry Saltz's tour de forces here earlier and got no response. Here it is again:

I also liked his article on the "Victorian Nudes" exhibit in Brooklyn:

real art historians read October- art forum is purchased for the top 10, the non art coverage and the pictures, frieze is the brit equiv. of art foruum, art news is for idle gossip and gallery lists, flash art is for international gossip, art in america is doctors office, art press is french and good, art and letters is from california and awful. lola is the hipster Border Crossing which is the borgie boho Canadian Art- which is used for people who only like lauren harris. there are others.
