I have now been published in the Wire, I can't believe it! :-))))))))

I've just been down to the newsagents - the new Wire is out and my Cabaret Voltaire review is in it! OK it's only a short review (though the director's cut is looooooooong) but I'm in print! I'm in a state of shock!!

I woke up this morning thinking that nothing was ever going to happen and now this, plus I now have EIGHT albums to review for the next issue of Uncut!

Can't believe it. It's like Christmas come early. I know that it's maybe a big day for me but no one else notices - but...well I don't know. It's like I've been allowed a second chance at life. You don't know how much this means to me!!!!

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 19 September 2002 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratulations! Which issue is it? I haven't got the newest one yet.
Again, Congratulations!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 19 September 2002 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Well done Marcello, you deserve it, I can relate a little considering my first printed review was in just a month or so ago, it didn't hit me until a friend said "you realise people may not buy the Dirty Vegas album now because of your criticism". WAHEY! Think about it like that, even better if you've had a chance to give something a positive review.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 September 2002 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

That's fantastic, Marcello. Will be buying it Saturday.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

It's the brand new one - I think it's only come out here today. Suicide are on the cover.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Congrats, Marcello! Good to see you getting more exposure (and hopefully more money) for the type of thing you've been doing here at ILM...very well, too. I'll have to pick this one up! (Probably in 2 months when it finally comes over by boat, or however they ship The Wire over to Canada.)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

re state-of-shock: wait till you get the pay-cheque!! it makes sub-atomic physics look a spacehopper shop

anyway well done and told you so!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I got published on NYLPM today. RAR.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

marcello that's awesome. fuck my university periodicals library for ceasing to stock the wire. mark s, can you maybe have talk with them?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Yowsa! Next step, world conquest.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratulations Marcello! I'll look forward to reading your reviews in Uncut.

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

hip hip hooray for marcello, on his magical getting published day!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Nice one Marcello, I'll search out a copy. Any chance you could do something for the NME to bring it up to scratch?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

this is absolutely brilliant Marcello. Congrats, nice to see you getting some money for all the stuff you're doing on Church of me and on ILM. can't wait to get the wire!

and yeah, I'll look forward to yr reviews on Uncut too.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry the above should read. 'Nice to see you're getting some freelance money as the stuff on church of me and ILM shows that you're bloody insightful'. or something.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Yo Marcello I saw the review on Tuesday ! Woz surprised especially after your slating [on Church of Me] over The Wire re: previous month's editorial.

Re: now have EIGHT albums to review for the next issue of Uncut!

I look forward to it.

Also Marcello as you are now a Wire/ Uncut contributor - you must be entitled to vote on the end of year polls. Uncut normally have the end of year list published in the edition that comes out first week of December. Have a word with Allan Jones - make sure your votes COUNT !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

nice work marcello...a lot of the stuff on your blog has been excellent lately, good to hear that its in print now as well...

robin (robin), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

God bless yiz Marcello. I mark out like a little girl whenever I see my name in print.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

martian perhaps you cd a list of the records that came out this year for marcello to choose from?

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

...along with some suggestions...

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i haven't seen my name in "print" in forever :`(

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

and cheers, of course, marcello. i'll reply to your dissection of the magazine article as soon as i wake up a little more and load up on painkillers. (this is not related to yr email, i promise.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I emailed you Marcello but thought, fuck it, I AM SO BLOODY PROUD OF YOU RIGHT NOW!!!!

paul brownell, Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Congrats Marcello.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Neat! Now, somehow find a way to get the new issue less than a month late in Dallas.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha, the magazines have swim across the atlantic themselves, it would seem by how long they take to arrive.

Marcello, yay!!! I will make a note to remember to buy it when it appears on the newstand over here. :)

lyra (lyra), Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Neat! Give Ryan Adams a bollocking!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

''Neat! Give Ryan Adams a bollocking!''

tom is very wise...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

just checked the wire page. suicide on the cover and it's got BARK! (one of my fave improv groups on the bites section, will have to get out of the house tomorrow).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay - well done! I might even buy The Wire now. And lets see Sugababes on the front of Uncut. And a 48-page Joe Meek special please!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratulations, Marcello: that's a bright spot for you, and hopefully it's just upward from here.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

This is great news. For many reasons obvious to anyone who's been around these parts for a while, and because you're one of the first ILXers I met, there is no one here whose successes would please me more.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

let's see sugababes on the front of the wire!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

b-but they'll lose all the advertising from Leo recs and so on...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, what a vast fortune they wld be giving up there...

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

and gain it from universal (or whoever) and so on!! it's win win baby!!

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

well i would prefer it to suicide that's for sure...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Mumm-ra!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

hey this is deja vu for me :).

well done, Marcello. well done.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, now the trick is to see if we can ever top august 2001 wherein three ilx related peoples were "published."

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:36 (twenty-three years ago)

im reviewed in the URB with the Roots on the cover!

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, alright, Marcello. I've never bought a copy of the Wire, either, but I'll be on the lookout for this one. Also--thanks for your thoughts on Kenneth Williams a year or so ago, in response to a thread I started. It was really enlightening. And finally--Church of Me has been SO GREAT lately. I especially loved the stuff on Duck Rock, Denny Laine, Scooter and Joe Meek. The latter was the best thing I've ever read about him.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

that's awesome, congratulations. I guess I'll have to actually start buying Uncut again.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

way to go! (btw i like your smiley face, it looks like it has about 7 chins)

ron (ron), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Congrats, Marcello. Getting published is ultrasweet.

And, Jess, just wait until that Da Capo book comes out! Me, I'm holding my breath like it's a baby's tender li'l finger in anticipay-yay-shun.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Big UP, Marcello. I usually get the piss taken out of me if ever there's something I'm involved with that gets in.

nick.K (nick.K), Friday, 20 September 2002 08:55 (twenty-three years ago)

fantastic marcello. i hope this is stage one of yr wire putsch? cos fckn' suicide on the fckn' cover of the OCTOBER fckn' 2002 issue is just... nnnngghhhh!

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I read it in the train station, it's weird seeing someone whose style you've got used to get edited down to review-length, like a join-the-dots of a Church of Me piece. Like the yes-they-were-pop-actually emphasis but then I would.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, the director's cut went to over 2000 words (typical CoM long-winded piece then), so really what you're getting there is a precis or an abstract of my piece rather than the piece itself (and as published, it's even been edited down from the original 350 words I submitted). Sadly it's strictly reviews for now - Rob Y has not responded to my "big ideas" thus far :-( but Sugababes on the cover of either Wire or Uncut would indeed be a magical thing.

As far as Uncut reviews go, these will similarly be 80-100 word "does what it says on the tin"-type reviews (maybe some leads to come, if I can work up some kind of an interviewing technique for the Q&As to go with big reviews), but I can always play around with those. Naturally there will be FULL-LENGTH pieces on said records on CoM if I like them enough.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 20 September 2002 09:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratulations...I dream about seeing my name in there someday, so I can relate to your excitement. What's nice about being in the Wire is the sense of permanence. People save those things, and I can pull one out from four years ago and enjoy it just as much as a new issue (plus, I've already forgotten most everything in it, so it's a fresh read!)

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Now all I have to do is work out cunning ways of getting the word "punctum" into every review hah!

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 20 September 2002 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

punctum's not dead

mark s (mark s), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i imagine Rob Young as a giant dormant aztec stone face that ppl go and pray before hoping that mist comes from his mouth or his eyes light up. alternatively: the fortuneteller machine in Big. but fatter.

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

he's actually surprisingly slender and cute

t.herrington also skinny (and tall)

i wd be yr man, scary aztec plumpness-wise, but i have no power

mark s (mark s), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

he never replied to my dead c interview idea that i have nowhere else to run. :(

(this is what i get for systematically alienating pitchfork and the rest of the online indie community.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess, you act like alienating Pitchfork is a bad idea...

Congratulations to Marcello. It's funny though, I got so used to seeing your letters in MM that I've thought of you as a published writer for a very long time.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Come to think of it, skinny and cute Rob has as yet failed to respond to my big ideas (OK, idea). I have heard nought from him save an ominous silence which probably means he's found my anti-Rob rant on CoM, harrumph.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 20 September 2002 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

is your idea the one you told me abt at the AMM gig marcello?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
just a quick question - is the new edition of The Wire in the shops yet? [it's due out today]

Also any Marcello content?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 24 October 2002 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yo yo yo! Big up Marcello. haha classick if Rob did read that dissin' you gave him (on a related note, on the bus the other day the sign's first letter had been worn away from years of squarrose children's arses, leaving a tool for Rob Young to save the world with: "ire Extinguisher." (haha, I thought of you Marcello. Congratulations. Ok. Me next!)

david h (david h), Thursday, 24 October 2002 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a copy in my hand - there's a 20-page Buggles retrospective by Marcello!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 24 October 2002 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Only kidding!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 24 October 2002 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

he has got the lead review tho', yes? india irie or something (he gives it six stars out of five! even tho' The Wire doesn't have star ratings!!)

Jeff W, Thursday, 24 October 2002 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

ahem, suicide. india.arie i reviewed for uncut and gave it two stars. and one of those stars was only because it had the good grace not to last longer than 59 minutes.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 24 October 2002 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the other star was a reward to the cd for staying intact after i had hurled it at the wall.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 24 October 2002 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

marcello- i like your ways.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 24 October 2002 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, sure, but - "ire Extinguisher"!!!!22 hahahaha

david h (david h), Thursday, 24 October 2002 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

;)

david h (david h), Thursday, 24 October 2002 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Waaaahhhh... I meant ;)

david h (david h), Thursday, 24 October 2002 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually the first single from the new India.Arie album ain't nearly as bad as I expected it would be. But the lyrics! AWFUL!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

david h i still fear you

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 24 October 2002 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcello, you goin' to the 20th bash... Think there's a chance of me getting a Dj spot?

nick.K (nick.K), Thursday, 24 October 2002 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I am really normal; don't worry bob. Aggressively normal.

david h (david h), Thursday, 24 October 2002 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Any semblence of respect garnered by your publication was lost when you put the emoticon in the subject of the post.

David Allen, Thursday, 24 October 2002 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanted to buy the new Wire today when I was in Birmingham. But none of the three WH Smith's at the airport had it. So I had to buy the latest Mojo which has at least a slightly interesting story about Morrissey's first album Viva Hate. The rest was mainly Beatles recycling. And a mini-review not doing justice to the master piece The World Is Flat. Whereas the latest Foo Fighters (which I don't know and don't care about) got a big rave review. :-(

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 24 October 2002 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yo, Marcello check The Guardian The Guide p25 your words are incorporated in a Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man / Go Beat Advert for the new album:

"Quietly Devastating"
Uncut ****

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 26 October 2002 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

and marcello's rise into the world of music journalism continues...he cannot be stopped!!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 26 October 2002 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, good on yer Marcello! Er, I won't be buying the Wire, if that's alright, but I'll seek out your Uncut reviews first when I get the new issue.
8 reviews for Marcello = 8 reviews less for Nigel Williamson, yip-yip.

The Streets for the cover!

DavidM (DavidM), Saturday, 26 October 2002 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

WooHah, job's a goodun Marcello

a-33, Saturday, 26 October 2002 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just ordered the Beth Gibbons CD on the strength of Marcello's review. See what power he now has over us mortals.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 26 October 2002 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I really should get a subscription to the Wire...I love Cabaret Voltaire so maybe that will make buy it...

Juan, Saturday, 26 October 2002 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

in actual fact my suicide piece turned out NOT to be the lead review grrr! (the new godspeed is) but at least it's in there anyway, as is my other piece for the month (convolution). i have to review a david thomas box set for the next issue yippee!

oh yes, and i will be reviewing the missy e AND justin t albums for uncut :-) BUT because of dreary major artist embargos i won't get my review copies until the day of release, so consequently the reviews prob won't appear in uncut until january. nevertheless director's cuts of these reviews will appear on CoM in november, of course.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 28 October 2002 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I see that Marcello's comments are now on the STICKER which is on the front of the Beth G CD! What next - sleevenotes? A guest appearance on sax on the b-side of the next single? Blimey.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 28 October 2002 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

World conquest is next, Dr. C. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 October 2002 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone can get sleevenotes, dr.c - a sticker is far grebter achievement! especially if it's one of those impossible to remove "removable" ones

zebedee, Monday, 28 October 2002 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)
